SXSW: Monki takes in GINGER SNAPS!!!

Published at:  Mar 11, 2001 10:45:21 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... still jazzed about GINGER SNAPS and telling everyone I meet about it, MEMENTO and WAKING LIFE and DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN... all 4 absolute winners, but with GINGER SNAPS probably being the movie I'll watch most repeatedly... though WAKING LIFE could turn into a habitual addicition. Meanwhile, for all you other Monkeys, that want to know more about GINGER SNAPS check out this really really nice fan site at GINGER-SNAPS.Com, they have the trailer and more info there... Before doing that though, have you always wondered if AICN has Monkeys at keyboards typing this stuff? Well there is only one... and we call him Monki... besides throwing his feces and mating with the back of people's necks... he's a well behaved chick magnet and flick follower, so sit back, scratch your armpits and read the Monki....

Monki here.  Tonight I was completely forgotten about and left in my cage until late in the evening.  This killed me seeing how I was missing some excellent SXSW movies in various places over Austin.  After repeatedly beating on my cage I finally managed to slip through a little gap between the bars and swing my way down to the Convention Center for the first screening of Ginger Snaps.

Holy lord!  This movie completely caught me off gaurd.  I honestly was thinking, oooh...a movie about cookies! (Almost as good as bananas)  Fortunately it wasn't about cookies at all and actually turned out to be the best horror movies I've seen in years.

The two main characters were so excellently played and realized.  Two sisters who hate all around them and turn to each other for anything they need.  The two have a sick fascination with death and killing and other assorted fun activities.  These are sisters that I would have loved to have.

A few surprises are some of the supporting actors that played their bits quite well.  The high school teacher and nurse were both right on the money with thier scenes and Mimi Roger's mother figure was such a delight.  This is the mother I wish I had.

Anyways, Ginger Snaps is a really fricken awesome movie, check it out.  If you liked Scream 3 and Scary Movie...you suck.  If you liked American Werewolf in London....seek out this movie.

Back in to the cage I go,

-Monki

I wanted to see this with Momento and Bartleby, but cash funds prevented that. Just mild curiosity on this one, but now you guys got me pumped. Im gonna have to fight myself into the Saturday screening now.

Am I the only talkbacker who actually enjoyed Blair Witch 2? And Hannibal wasn't too bad either (if only a little disappointing).

    Blair Witch 2

    by darthmatt77

I actually just watched BLAIR WITCH 2: BOOK OF SHADOWS last night and have to admit it was pretty good......if not very, very predictable. I believe the thing that turned me on most to the film was that really, really, really, really, really, really hot Wiccan girl who runs around topless in a couple of scenes..almost made up for that whole stupid sub-story involving the lead character and his stint at a local mental institute. But it was still pretty creepy and the aformentioned woman is the stuff of hundreds of wet, fuzzy dreams...so if you have an hour and a half to blow..check it out :)

Blair Witch 2: Better than Scream 3, at least

    by veidt

I got the feeling that the people behind Blair Witch 2 were at least trying to make a good, serious horror movie. And if BW2's ending hadn't been so incredibly abrupt I might've liked it a lot more. Now that it's coming on DVD, I'm sure I'll want to give it another look. And I did like Hannibal quite a lot. www.undertakerslounge.com

why is this going straight to video and Valentine gets 2000 scre

    by fatal discharge

All the reviews I've read of this female werewolf film have been good and the horror field needs a major boost of creativity right now so why not release this in theaters? I loved Scream but the resulting ripoffs with dumb teenagers being killed have brought the horror genre to a depressing low. We need some "new blood" and fast!

    Ginger ... confused and cliched??

    by jbreen

Ginger Snaps has been out on video here in Oz for some time. I quite liked it, but a few things have to be pointed out. The film runs with that hoary old ulta-conservative chestnut of a theme which parallels the girl turning into a werewolf with the girl turning promiscuous. And where being promiscuous is something that can only lead to a horrible end. Indeed her younger sister Brigitte can't decide whether to save her sister, join her or kill her. So the film's closure seems to suggest that the only solution to a sexually predatory (read 'aware') woman is the harsher sentence. Between this stupid theme, the foolishly inept adult figures and the rather weird idea that Brigitte wants to 'cure' her sister partly out of dubious moral concerns and partly out of feeling left out, Ginger Snaps is certainly a long way from being the cult masterpiece painted hereabouts. Okay but no doggie cigar.

    An American Goldfish in AICN

    by bullettoothtony

    Hello? Memories must be bad!
BW2 was awful, what are you guys thinking about, after an interesting setup of 15mins, it bombed.the worst ever.Gingersnaps though looks like being a great horror movie,if it comes close to An American Werewolf it'll rock, lets hope it's not American Werewolf in Paris which must be on par with BW2 for fucking up after a tight first film.
Let's hope the forthcoming prequel for American Werewolf about the wolf in Yorkshire that attacks Jack and David lives up to the creepy, scary and funny first movie.
Remember stay off the moors and beware the moon ,lads. -oops!

You made me miss,I never miss!

    Remember the Alamo!

    da witch

    by the silent end

There's a part in BW2 where you're supposed to catch a split second of the witch. You guys know what i'm talking about right ( when the girl who had a misscareage stares into the camera)? I couldn't make out a clear picture when i watched the tape (no dvd) so i was wondering if any of you could take a snap shot of it and send it to me.

I know I speak for alot of people

    by littlenemo

about the Blair Witch Project. That movie was the worst example of horror ever concieved and brings to mind a childrens story called "the emporer's new clothes" the producers of that movie learned alot from that little fable, make everyone believe they see something that is not there. And now, thanx to BW, we have shows like MTV's "Fear", the family channels(the family channel!?...wtf?) "the scariest places on earth" narrated by that munchkin from "Poltergeist" and other shows coming to your nearest cable channel. I don't care about BW2 and I will not spend a penny on anything that will convince the powers that be to finance a BW3 "project"!!!!
