Elston Gunn's WEEKLY RECAP

Published at:  Mar 04, 2001 12:10:04 PM CST

Father Geek here with one more WEEKLY RECAP from Elston Gunn. I'm smilin' 'cause my favorite living crazy (Bruce Dern) is set for another screen appearance. Even if it is only as a Xerox operator in MILWAUKEE, MINNESOTA (I know... I know... no such place, I did use the word crazy in the above)It will be a little indie flick. And ol' Father Geek is on pins and needles awaiting Ralph Fiennes' appearance in David Cronenberg's creepy SPIDER... surprize, surprize a "psychological chriller" pinned by Patrick McGrath. And what about that Sonnenfield - Coen Bros. project LADY KILLERS... yummy! Well enough of Father Geek... onward thru the week's recap...

MISCELLANEOUS PRODUCTION TIDBITS

* Producer Tom Jacobson (upcoming BIG TROUBLE) has a few projects on his
plate: the aforementioned GRINGO, starring Johnny Knoxville; PUBLIC ENEMY
at Fox 2000, currently being rewritten by Steve Pink and D.V. DeVincentis;
PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION about a date instructor and her client; LADY
KILLERS, a remake being written by Joel and Ethan Coen which Barry
Sonnenfeld may direct; and SAINT-X, a biopic of THE LITTLE PRINCE author
Antoine de St. Exupery, who was a French aviator. Regis Wargnier
(INDOCHINE) will direct that project.

* Twentieth Century Fox and Bill Cosby are developing FAT ALBERT, a
live-action picture based on the animated character and Cosby's standup
monologues. The project will be a mixture of hip-hop, humor, as well as
social/personal issues. Cosby wrote the screenplay with Charles Kipps.

* 310 Entertainment and Trixter are working on the animated pic MOBY DICK
II, inspired by MOBY DICK II, OR THE MISSILE WHALE by Patricia Highsmith.
Michael Coldewey (THE FEARLESS FOUR, HEAVY METAL 2000) is directing and
co-producing the project from a script he wrote with Joachim Masannek.
Jurgen Prochnow (DAS BOOT) will lend his voice to the feature.

* Muse Prods./Blacklist Prods have optioned the feature rights to the 90s
book GENERATION X: TALES FOR AN ACCELERATED CULTURE by Douglas Coupland.
It's about a group of twenty-year olds in Palm Springs who are overeducated
for their jobs, having a disenchanted view of corporate culture and are
amusing one another with their wild stories. The film is expected to be in
production by the end of the year.

* James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment has extended its deal at 20th
Century Fox and is developing numerous projects including, BROTHER TERMITE,
a sci-fi drama based on the novel by Patricia Anthony, adapted by John
Sayles and to be directed by Stephen Norrington, THE COFFIN, a film
noir/suspense project based on the new comic book for director Guillermo del
Toro; and the romantic comedy DAMNED IF YOU DO, which will be directed by
Stan Winston. The company is also working on THE FURTHEST PLACE by Joe
Gayton and David Schow with Rupert Wainwright directing; Rick
Krause-scripted COMEBACK, Anne Rice's RAMSES THE DAMNED; REAL TIME; and TRUE
LIES 2.

* Producer Charles Evans Jr. has filed a lawsuit claiming he was booted from
his own project, a biopic based on the life of Howard Hughes. The suit says
Evans had been developing a Hughes film since 1993. In 1998, Evans
attempted to convince Leonardo DiCaprio to play the part of Hughes, who
wanted Michael Mann to direct. Mann hired John Logan to write a screenplay.
After months of understanding that Mann and DiCaprio were planning to do
the Hughes film at New Regency with him, Evans discovered that Mann had made
a deal with New Line to do a Hughes project. The complaint alleges fraud,
breach of implied contract and intentional interference with economic
advantage.

* Sony Pictures Classics grabbed the worldwide rights to GRATEFUL DAWG, a
documentary chronicling the final days of late Grateful Dead frontman Jerry
Garcia. The project centers on the musical friendship between Garcia and
mandolinist/recording artist, David Grisman, who is also the father of the
project's director, Gillian Grisman. The studio plans to release the film
on August 1, Garcia's birthday.

Project development slacked off slightly this week, but there was still
mounds of casting. Some promising stuff out there. Joseph Fiennes in a
David Cronenberg film sounds mighty cool. Ensemble casts are rampant now
with THE DIVINE SECRETS OF THE YA-YA SISTERHOOD, WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE...AND
YOUNG, JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK, 29 PALMS, ORANGE COUNTY and several
others continuing to cast. Lotsa Cosby this week with FAT ALBERT and I SPY
projects gearing up for production. Johnny Knoxville is busy as well. And
the classics aren't ignored either with versions of HAMLET, THE IMPORTANCE
OF BEING EARNEST, DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, PINOCCHIO and GET SMART in the
making.

My cohort Booger Lee and I invite you to check out our interview
earlier this week with Nile Southern, son of legendary writer Terry (DR.
STRANGELOVE, EASY RIDER). You can find it href="http://aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=8300">Right Here. Thanks!

Until next week...

    Buzz Maverik's Weekly Recap

    by buzz maverik

TAKEN FROM PELHAM 1-2-3...BEATNIKS VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS will be Michael Bay's follow up to PEARL HARBOR. Based on a true incident that occured in 1956, UFOs arrive over the U.S. and challenge America to an upper atmosphere dogfight. Fortunately, we have a five seat battlecruiser in Hanger 18 which landed at Roswell, N.M. in 1947. In flashback, the film shows that there was no crash at Roswell; the aliens simply landed, got out and realized they'd locked their keys inside. After the Air Force placed the crew in jars of formaldahyde, a sergeant opened the ship with a coat hanger. An American flight crew is assembled at Edwards AFB: Chuck Yeager, George Bush Sr., Pancho Barnes, Charles Lindbergh and Eddie Richenbacher. All hell breaks loose when the crew falls ill from bad Tang just before take off. A frantic search is started for five people who fit the flight suits. Luckily, Jack Kerouac, Neal and Caroline Cassidy, Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs are camping in the nearby desert, enjoying poetry and getting stoned. They are quickly drafted and sent into the skies to save the Earth...David Fincher has finally committed to a sci-fi project of his own. He will adapt Phillip K. Dick's 1964 novel WHO THE HELL AM I? for Warner Bros...Arnold Schwartzeneggar will star in CARRIE BRIGHTLEIT. He will play a Marine drill sergeant on the verge of retirement who takes classes in order to meet women. He finds that he has a talent for painting cute whimsical characters and writing silly, sentimental verse. Discovered by business woman Demi Moore, he starts a greeting card/calendar refrigerator magnet company under the name Carrie Brightleit. Annette Benning plays an actress who is hired to front for Arnold as artist Carrie Brightleit. A love triangle results, while Arnold must cope with a young Marine, Seann William Scott, who has learned his secret identity and is blackmailing him...See you at the library.

This is the worst news I've heard all week. If Bay's doing Beatniks v. Flying Saucers next then what happens to his much anticipated, Kicking A Drunk Guy's Ass? Word had it ready for pre-production with Bruckheimer to produce and Affleck eager to take on the starring role of the All-American high school quarterback who performs the titular act. Rumor had Michael Clarke Duncan lined up to play the role of his overprotective, soft-at-heart tough guy, center who has to fight against the bigotry of the school administration to stay on the team. Will Simon West take over now? How will this affect the casting process? Any new news on this project?

    5tone's 2cents...

    by tommy5tone

here it is, because you're entitled to my opinion*****ralph fiennes and david cronenberg are well-matched: both have chilly exteriors but are raging volcanoes underneath (no, really, it's true). 'spider' author patrick mcgrath is a creepy SOB, and cronenberg's one of the ideal directors to bring him to the screen (if nicolas roeg was still in the game, he'd do OK too)*****is it just me or is woody allen only making movies now so he can get close to young hotties? elizabeth berkley is in his latest, now tiffani thiessen has been signed for his newest - hey, i liked 'annie hall' and 'manhattan' as much as the next guy with taste, but this is just...creepy*****'understanding virginia' - they'll love it at sundance and toronto, no one else will ever pay money to watch it. guaranteed*****anyone read kevin smith's "unholy tale of greasy reese witherspoon" at psycomic.com? it's now impossible for me to watch anything with her in it knowing she's such a snooty bee-yatch*****wow, you mean johnny knoxville's 'gringo' has "wacky misadventures"? can't wait!*****mmmmm, bellucci*****'austin powers 3' should be fun, i guess, but when is mike myers gonna do something SUPERcool? he came close with 'confessions of a dangerous mind', and surely he's got the clout to do something a little left of centre. but 'shrek' looks good, eh?*****owen wilson as a screenwriter: of course. owen wilson and jackie chan: hell yes. owen wilson in a cool ensemble: you bet. owen wilson and eddie murphy: it's not gonna work. i can feel it*****benigni as pinocchio = sign of the impending apocalypse*****glad to see jake kasdan's giving chevy chase some work. it's true, he deserved to be banished from movie for a while after 'vegas vacation', but he's fletch, man! he deserves a comeback shot*****have i smoked too much weed or does DMX versus eminem sound strangely cool? yes, it'll be shallow and stupid, but if it's loud, violent and profane, it could be a fun night at the flicks...as long as there's no "rap showdown" at the finale*****i dig nick hornby's books and both 'fever pitch' and 'high fidelity' worked very well on-screen but i lost interest in 'about a boy' when i heard the weitz bros were directing. i'm sure they're smart, sweet lads (and their 'antz' script was pretty good) but their directorial efforts are ugly-looking and way lame*****'get smart' just got dumb. jim carrey is really the only hope for this project, but they'll probably go with david arquette now that 'see spot run' opened at #2 at the box office. fuck it*****'shadow government' - doesn't that title scream "direct to video"?*****'rule #3' has a really cool concept, but i dunno if ramis is right for it. someone with a slightly black touch (barry sonnenfeld, michael lehmann...maybe even danny devito) is better suited to it, IMHO*****i read somewhere that 'josiah's canon' is "going young". great - paul walker, usher, nicholas brendon and one of the chicks from 'popular' will be the crack team of thieves under the tutelage of holocaust survivor richard dreyfuss/ben kingsley (under some nifty old-age makeup). silberling's a good director - i hope he can stop this potentially cool caper from going off the rails*****'puka pete' = super shite*****using my kreskin-like power of prediction, i can tell you now that the new 'fat albert' movie will be renamed 'phat albert' to give it a dope, down with the kids edge. do you disbelieve me?*****gee, a 'generation x' movie would have ruled...IN 1992!!!*****johnny depp is howard hughes. leonardo dicaprio is not howard hughes. johnny depp is howard hughes. you see where i'm going with this?*****any major dude will tell you, now five-tone has too.

  • My problem with the first movie: too much originality. We had to get used to all the new jokes, the Woody-Willie montage, the Jerry Springer parody, and Dr. Evil struggling to ignore his new 90's knowledge of economics, and reapply 60's prices to his evil schemes. It required too much thought...sometimes I just want the same jokes that made me laugh in the first movie again. We know they worked, so why annoy us with new jokes. The third one can hit us again with the time travel humor that seemed so alien and disconcerting in the second one, but will seem like an old friend by Summer 2002. Good job Mike!

A Tip For Elston & A Response To Sleazy G...

    by buzz maverik

Elston, I read your talkback about giving up crack when you write your updates. Good move. I highly recommend this stuff that this chemistry major named Rico makes at the UCLA dorms. He synthesized this bark that a "missionary" brought up from the rainforest. Down there, when you drink the boiled bark you see gods with puma-heads and shit. Up here, you still see those but since it's synthetic, they're riding Harleys and snowmobiles. It's what I'm on when I do my recaps. Rico's going to start selling it at raves. I'm trying to get him to name it after me since I tested it for him...Now on to Sleazy G.--first off, it's not Strikebreakers Inc. It's Buzz Maverik's Strikebreaking Goons Inc. I'm the non-existent corporate character, like Orville Reddenbacher or Sergio Valente or Bartles and Jaymes, only with a baseball bat. Secondly, that threat of going after my wife and kid made them laugh. But just in case, I've sent them up to my survival property where they could hold off an army, the New World Order, the Martians, the Lord Humongous and his gang, and the Jehovah's Witnesses if need be. Also, I've established a series of alternate identities years ago for just such emergencies. So be here next week for Olaf Valdez's Weekly Recap...

hugh grant? c'mon, sleazy, hugh grant is the bomb! (hee-hee)

    by tommy5tone

must agree - the main character in 'about a boy' is meant to be some pop culture-friendly hipster, and hugh just doesn't cut the mustard. can you picture hugh lecturing some 12 year old about the virtues of nirvana? "yes, young man, it is in fact, um, well, a fact that nirvana is the - to quote chuck D, actually - 'the shit'. kurt cobain...well, he's all of that and a bag of crisps, if you ask me." get rufus sewell, i think. and the 'fever pitch' movie (starring colin firth) is way cool - very funny, insightful and moving. it is, in fact, dope. rather dope, actually.
