Joe Dante & Christopher Lee to remake DEVIL RIDES OUT'
Hey folks, Harry here... Now ordinarily I'm not too big on remakes of Hammer films... I love the originals, and quite honestly with their scores and the texture of the film look... and the fact that people doing the remakes would never use Christopher Lee... and it is impossible to bring in Peter Cushing... I'm kinda like... Ummm... Why are you doing this? Well, that's not the case here. First off, JOE DANTE is apparently the director rooting to helm the remake.... second, there is the involvement of Christopher Lee... who would apparently be playing the role he originated in the first film... and it is DEVIL RIDES OUT, which is just hands down one of my favorite Hammer flicks. The mythology and world of DEVIL RIDES OUT is incredibly rich... the evil fighting rulebook alone is precious. Personally I'd love it to death if Bruce Campbell were to play Lee's student in this film, but hey... don't we want him in everything? Here's the scoop...
Hi Harry,
Just thought you and the hammer horror fans on AICN might be interested in
the fact that empireonline.co.uk has got a story about a forthcoming 'Devil
Rides Out' remake. Under the headline 'Lee to enter Dantes Inferno' it has
the man himself confirming that he will be repriseing his role as the Duc de
Richleau for director Joe Dante. There is also a story about Lee's abhorence
at the prospect of The Wicker Man being remade by an all american company.
Hope you find it interesting.
Just call me Poison Ivy. x.

Terence Fisher is one of the top horror directors of all time, I can't figure Joe Dante topping him, less after that horrid Small Soldiers. I'm sure it would be one of this trendy tongue-in-cheek fantasy movies that don't take themselves seriously (yeah, Mummy, I'm talking TO YOU). Really, I'm tired of all this "is cool to mock serious fantasy trend", I hope that Lord of the Rings set things back on track and we can enjoy fantasy films that believe in their stories and are not afraid to tell them. Like Buffy does. I've always thought that Buffy works because it has a silly concept but makes it work because it takes it SERIOUSLY. Anybody else thinks like me?

Dante needs to get his groove back after SMALL SOLDIERS...somebody tell me that this will be the comeback. I know nothing about this original film, but I know that Dante and Lee worked pretty well together on GREMLINS 2. One thing though: Dante hasn't done anything with no "camp" since THE HOWLING. Will that work for this?

Its like somebody saying, "Gee, I wish I directed, wrote or starred in that! I know! I'll remake it so I can!" Case-in-point, original versus remake: "Flipper", "House On Haunted Hill", "Godzilla" and my all time favorite, "The Haunting". just to name a few of the aboritions out there. Get off your ass and direct, write or star another story. There's plenty of them out there just waiting to be made.

A new version of this film is likely to stink for two reasons: first, because it won't have the late, great Charles Gray--the only person who could TOP Christopher Lee in terms of evil; and, second, because the original film took religion SERIOUSLY, and it was important to the plot that religion BE taken seriously. I doubt any (post-)modern director could show the angels victorious without putting his tongue firmly in his cheek.

.... it is from the typically dodgy Brit tabloid press. As a major fan of Dante's work, I'd love to see him try his hand at re-making a Hammer horror classic, and would *really* like to see a return to the relatively smirk-free style of THE HOWLING (though that film did have its tongue-in-cheek moments, at least they were less pronounced.) Casting Lee would be gravy.

Man! I wish I was around for the Hammer Films. Those neat Zombie glasses or the Rasputin beard, I wish I had those. I really hope this is made, but it better be good. Not like these other crappy remakes that have plagued us for the past couple of years.

I love the original, but the effects are pretty poor and let what is an otherwise excellent film down.
I wouldnt worry about this being sanitised for todays youth as the story and several of the scenes in the original cant really be toned down (drive through the park late at night, angel of death etc) or they become pointless.
Oh and finally, do you think they will use the book as the source or just remake the entire film? -
And Empire is Britains best source for movie news. Incidentally, did anyone see brit tabloid News of the world running that Alien 5 story again? Jesus.

...is that it might get Dennis Wheatley's novels back in print. Nah, they'd hire some hack to novelize it.

i lived in england for a year when i was a nine year old lad, and saturday night always ruled because the BBC would screen a double horror feature around midnight. it was hammer time all the time, and it was here that five-tone developed his lifelong appreciation for mighty talents like peter cushing, ingrid pitt, terence fisher and the legendary christopher lee. 'the devil rides out' was frequently screened and always managed to freak out young five-tone. it's not scary today but it's pretty damn cool nonetheless. if we must have a remake, how about alan rickman as the duc de richelieu, timothy dalton as mocata, sean bean as rex van ryn, christian bale as simon aron and monica bellucci as tanith? mr lee gets a cool cameo, of course. i'm tommy five-tone and i naturally prefer the original - because hammer kicks so much ass.

i thought cristopher lee was in a wheelchare from a horse accident five yeers bac.

. . . or were you just trying to use irony? Because I can't tell. If that WAS a joke, though, it was a pretty good one.
-
Don't do it! Leave it be, in the name of God (and the other fella) let it alone! The original is fine I tell ya. Just fine. Better than fine! Hands off! Go remake Star Wars or Casablanca but piss off away from this one!

He's been in some pretty dire films but there always worth watch because he's in it. I thought the ending of the original film was a bit naff. (Spoiler alert I guess) I mean there are these magical words and he keeps going on about how dangerous it would be to use them to drive away the evil. Then someone does say them and boom it sets the world to rights with no negative side affects. I keep feeling I musted have missed something.

If anyone can do it, Dante can. I love his work. And granted Small Soldiers was pretty much a Gremlins rip-off, I still kind of liked it. It was neat. I would like to see Dante get back into some serious horror though.

How can anyone not love horror movies with titles like FRANKENSTIEN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL, TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA, TWINS OF EVIL and BLOOD FROM THE MUMMY'S TOMB? I had the priviledge of meeting Mr.Lee at a signing for a CD he had just recorded. Great news for all you Lee fans! While the man looks very much his age and a bit long in the tooth in photographs and film appearances such as SLEPPY HALLOW....in person he is unbelieveably energetic and spry. How can I emphasize this enough. In his photos Christopher Lee looks like he's got one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel but in person he looks to be in fantastic shape!!! I'm happy to report that after meeting the man in person it looks as if he'll be around for years and years to come.

I never saw the original film but I really dug Gremlins 2 which starred Christopher Lee and Joe Dante and would love to see them team up to do another film again. Joe Dante is one of the few directors I know who's never let me down. Plus, when are those special edition DVDs of the Gremlins movies gonna come out ?

For the record, the term 'Tabloid' properly refers only to the size and format of the paper itself. Most magazines and Newspapers in the UK are in tabloid format, and it is mainly the fault of the phaenomena of american grocery store gossip rags.
-
CITIZENKANE, Christopher REEVE fell of a horse and became wheelchair bound, where talking about Christopher LEE.
-
"Tabloid" refers to a half-size NEWSPAPER (still bigger than a magazine), or any sensationalist newspaper. Empire is neither.
