BATTLE ROYALE will play in UK theaters!
Hey folks, Harry here with news from the Dirty Turkey that BATTLE ROYALE is scheduled to play in England... which means that the British Distributors are currently COOLER than American Distributors... that they have the balls to release this film. I hope we get it here in the U.S. ARTISAN? USA? SONY? MIRAMAX? Somebody, seize the opportunity!
Hi Harry,
Long time reader, first time writer blah,blah,blah....
In Saturday 24/2/01 Independent newspaper in the UK there is an article confirming that BATTLE ROYALE (the one film I cannot wait to see!) is getting a UK release in October, however it also claims that nobody is willing to distribute it in the States... so in your face Yankees !!! :)

Wanker was on the edge of getting on Hannibal's case, but seeing as it was directed by Ridley Scott, and because people actually want to see the film, he backed off.

Congratulations to the UK! Here in Norway this will probably never be shown anywhere. I'll just wait for the DVD, then.
Ah, well... at least we won't get that rotten cycle of tabloid hysterics that you brits always get when "controversial" movies Like A Clockwork Orange, Child's Play, Natural Born Killers, Pulp Fiction etc. get the occational theatrical outing. Yawn, here comes another one...

I just remembered a little story about Kubrick.
A few years ago in Kings Cross London there was a brilliant cinema run by fans called the Scala.
It was cheap and dirty but kept going by a lot of dissafected and marginalised people who helped keep it going.
They had the most ecelectric programme I've ever known.
I used to go there to watch all nighters. Everyone would be stoned watching 'Apocalypse Now' while tube trains rumbled underneath adding to the carnage onscreen.
another time it would be ABBA the movie or a gay film evening. One thing was allways true - something different was guaranteed - till one xmas as a special treat they secretly showed 'A Clockwork Orange'
This lead to them being sued and eventually closed down due to being fucked over for a film.
So thank you Stanley.
I for one will always remember you for changing the face of London independent cinemas.
Nowadays theres really nowhere to go (Rio, Ritzy, Electric, NFT) - they always show the usual trash blockbusters or a double bill of 'The Big Blue' and ' Betty Blue' on 'Indie night' -
OK, so we're going to get Battle Royale, probably a fucked up, skanked up sanitised version, that has been hacked to bits by Anne widdecombes love monkies at the BBFC.
I for one hate them and want to see them being censored. HA HA.
I appologise for nothing. -

Its subtitled and therefore not a threat to the great moral majo

Generally tends to be mainstream multiplex stuff that causes the biggest consternation, notice how all the films listed by the poster above are American, Man Bites Dog slipped through as do many full on European and Asian films. Art House patrons tend to get left alone as rags such as the Daily Mail deam them middle class, educated and capable of comprehending what they are witnessing as being art and not becoming little psycopaths like the rest of us easily influenced masses. Might be some tabloid shit but i expect this to escape the wrath of the self appointed protectors of our moral fibre.

I have to join DrX in toasting the Scala cinema - perhaps the sleaziest, finest cinema going experience I ever had. The only cinema with a house cat (called Droog) that would prowl around the stalls during the movies. I shall never forget the night the projector slipped and a packed house craned their necks up to watch 2001 projected across the ceiling. A bizarrely perfect experience.

Battle Royale - nice work , almost as nice as hearing original ROSES drummer ALAN 'RENI' WREN has formed a new band called THE RUB, and will play a short UK tour in March...
-
Did I spell it wrong?
-
Why do you mention her? Are you suggesting she should be put on an island with a bomb attached to her neck? If so, I heartily agree. Her and the 'Popstars' and Jamie Oliver and Robbie Williams and Donna Air and all the other Nathan Barleys I have to work with.
-
A bomb would be too kind and quick a way to deal with Widders.
A good fles eating virus will do the trick (and on her, will take a while, prolonging the pain..) -
Chaps, to hunt the beast you have to understand it.
We all know how much she likes a good toke on a fat old spliff, so we just give her some ganja that's been mixed with LSD.
Thus she becomes a crack whore with Blair as her pimp.
Or as he's soon to be known Huggy Blair.
Her good name as godess of all that is chaste then falls into disrepute and she shoots herself and Jamie Olivers fat tongue.
HA HA HA HA.......
BUFFALO MOZERELLA ANYONE.
PUKKA FUKKA -
My post about Kubric shutting the Scala and killing off the best (only decent) indie/arthouse cinema in London was written a little too quickly.
I meant to put it on the other page about AI for all the 'Kubrick is god' fans.
I also forgot to mention that after the Scala was shut down by Kubrick and his lawyers it was unused for a few years (there was talk of knocking it down) It finally got bought and turned into a nightclub/bar.
I havent been but im glad its serving some useful purpose.
Anne Widdecome should be put on a housing estate somewhere up north like Rotherham and given basic dole money (or Jobseekers allowance) the old bag. -
her nickname in the brit press is Doris Karloff !
What I want to see is a film of Hague and Coe on the Judo mat - perhaps Portaloo has the video...
I went to the same school as Seb Coe.
It was shite.
cause of him being famous they thought we had to keep up some tradition by running all over the bloody Peak district in the winter.
Half of Def Leppard went to our school as well but they wouldnt let us grow our hair long, get mashed, shag loads of groupies and play guitar all day.
f***ckin double standards!!!! -
I want to see children die.
-
I might be wrong so i'll go and check.
As far as I know it stan actually withdrew his own film due to the hysterical reactions of the british press at the time and percieved threats on his person.
The press all harped on about British youths dressing up as droogs and wandering around looking for a ruck.
A few years ago it was Chucky wot did it.
Shame they don't get so excited about places like Thamesmead for instance which was used in the film (where the tramp gets a booting) the sinkhole where all the problem familes and immigrants get dumped.
-
A Clockwork Orange was banned in Britain by Kubrick himself. A couple of weeks after relese with a regular BBFC certification, a rash of supposed 'copycat' beatings spooked him so much that he had it withdrawn from distribution. The Scala was closed down by Warners for showing a film out of license and without permission, rather than uncertificated. Of course, as soon as kubrick died, warners rushed it into theatres, saying that Stan had been "in discussions" with them about it shortly before his death. Mmmm - I'm sure he had... Still, can't ask him now.
-
this German Company : http://www.charmes.de/S-Mart/bottom.html lists the VCD of Battle Royale as coming soon.
-
We will have our hands on the R3 dvd of this film before it hits the theatres. So who really gives a toss.
-
I've got to go along with the earlier post from Meat Takeshi.
The film will probably manage to avoid being butchered by the BBFC for a couple of reasons - mainly because it'll be found in art cinemas rather than you local Showcase or Warner Bros ones. Chalk one up for Battle Royale there. If it's not in the mainstream, then it's less "dangerous".
Secondly, it's a subtitled Japanese movie. Whether it should or not, that'll put off a lot of people from going to see it, and it'll mean it's not gonna be a movie that kids try and sneak in to see over here. If it's less likely to reach the "impressionable youth" then our friends at the BBFC could loosen the reigns a little more too. That's another plus point for the movie.
Finally, from what I've read, the movie isn't going for an all out schlock horror approach, but is using the realistic portrayal of violence to get a message across. As you say in America, three strikes for the film classification guys - they're outta here.
I'm just happy that we'll be able to see for ourselves whether or not it IS a genuinely interesting film that has something to say, or just a cheap attempt at pushing the envelope to get some cheaper publicity. Roll on October, eh? -
Does anyone remember a film called Kids. About that gobby little brat with HIV who went around fucking ten year olds.
That was an artistic documentary, never got nationwide release in this country. Mainly because it was too true to life for most adults tastes.
Now you have to wonder how many kids would have stopped living a life like that if they had seen the film.
Now ask yourself how many kids would stop pursuing a life of violence if they saw Battle Royale.
The answer to this is not one, because your average kid will only see the violence and not the story.
The british have a habit of banning things without looking for the subtext or moral.
We banned an episode of Starsky and Hutch because one of them was drugged up for the most of it.
It was anti drugs, but who cares lets ban it.
So I say to everyone at the BBFC, fuck off I'm a big boy thankyou, go and wipe someone elses nose. -
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!
Sorry Had To Be Done :) -
This movie lures its audience in with the title, "Battle Royale". Let me say, I have seen this movie and I was vastly dispointed. This film hardly held up to the "Battle Royals" of the old WWF. There was no Hulk Hogan giving a leg-drop to The Model Ric Martel. Andre the giant was not body slamming the iron shiek, and Captain Lou Albano was no where to be seen.
All this film consisted of was abunch of teenaged Japanese kids killing each other, HO-HUM. If I wanted to see young Japanese people dying all I'd have to do is turn on the History channel and watch the invasion of Guadacanal special they've been running for the last week. -
...but I can understand why distributors may be afraid to touch this movie. Only by reading the description I got kinda sick. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US.
-
Where the hell am I? Widdecombe? Olivers? Who are these people? What do all these strange words mean? Droogs?
Bollocks!? Gobby!? Rotherham?!!Portaloo!!? Why does every word have an E on the end!! For the love of God does this alphabet contain no Z's!!? HAS THE WHOLE WORLD GONE MAD!?!?...makeitstop makeitstop makeitstop...ghr...jhhhl...urr..huuh... -
I saw Battle Royale a couple of weeks ago and the violence is pretty much 'in yer face', not a bad thing either. As far as I understood it however, they've released it in the West as new cut with slightly toned down gore.
It's still going to be one of the craziest things you'll ever see though!
By the way who'd like to invest a few million in helping me start a new cinema with an editorial stance similar to that of the Scala? I've loads of experience and I think there's plenty of opportunity for a proper art-house cinema in London (Piss off Ritzy, Picture House etc!) -
Before we go slurping the collective butts lets remember that until last year the British Board of film classification would n`t even let us see the fucking Evil Dead or Texas Chainsaw Massacre!!!! They cut the violence out of Fight Club and in UK porn you can`t even show penetration!!!So don`t feel to hard done by you filth exposed yanks.
