Wow, this movie really has an interesting concept. I will definitely keep an eye out for a
    subtitled dvd.

    11th cause?

    by saluki

Yea, I would rate "annoying co-workers" as a higher cause of violence then the media. If only I could understand what is being said in the trailer, I think it would have a bigger impact. The girl smiling while firing was interesting. Remember people, no one really got hurt here (Hell, I think it would be fun seeing myself on screen with my chest exploding!).

    Hmm

    by randall flagg

For some reason, all this time when people were talking about Battle Royale I was thinking about the movie with Brooke Smith, Catherine Martin from Silence of the Lambs, just found out that that's a similar movie called Series 7 : The Contenders. Harry what do you think of that one, are the two comparible?

A documentary about New York City public schools?

    by psyclops

Wow. Very frightening stuff. I'd love to see how those punk ass Maury Povich Show brats handle themselves in THAT survival program. It's a bit like Lord of the Flies, which disturbed me all those years ago. Misunderstood art.

That trailer was kind of disturbing...

    by gravyakira

I never had a problem with violence in movies, but there was something about those scenes of violence that disturbed me. I must see this film.

    Land of the free

    by el cid

Harry, you make it seem like someone HAS to distribute this film. Film companies can buy whatever films they want. It's not Artisans duty or anyones duty to release this. By not buying this film does the USA become any more hypocritical?

    Violence

    by el cid

Anyway, (sorry for the double post) I don't think this is the kind of movie that is going to inspire violence. From the looks of things, its showing the horror of killing, not like movies that almost glorify violence. Not saying that those kind of movies promote people to kill.

    by kavaloni

A.) No one is telling the distributors NOT to buy this film. No politicians, no PTA's, NO ONE! Thus, this is not a case of censorship. B.) A distributor would buy it if it seemed like a profitable business decision. Hell, most distributors would sell their own mothers into slavery if they thought it would make 'em a few bucks.

    by sith lord jesus

. . .over scenes of a bunch of people standing in line and shots of newspaper clippings. It looks to me like they're just trying to exploit the controversy surrounding the film. Lame. I still want to see it, but the first trailer was far better.

    series 7

    by thoreau

randall, series 7 is quite different than this, primarily being that it's about adults. part of the fascination with this is that its about children, young children to boot.

On a side note, has anyone read, "The Long Walk" by stephen king (during his bachman books years). I find this is much more similar to that than "the running man" mentioned in harry's post.

    by panpil

The spirit is much closer to "The Long Walk". It is still in my top3 Steven King's stories of all time. Although I Think the best is "IT". Harry what about Smymalan (do i spell it right?) and Indy4? Will he write the script?

    by dirtman

The film looks fucking great, but even if it is released over here (England)or over there (U S) it is gonna have cuts made.Region 3 (Asia)will be the only way to see this film in all its uncut glory .

    Long Walk

    by isildur

Yeh King's the Long Walk was a great story and would make a geat film if anyone had the guts to film it.
Difference in this story is that its not kids killing each other but BEING killed by the TV station making the programme for "entertainment".
Actually it seems a more horrible scenario than Battle Royale.
Anyway seems like an interesting film though here in the UK (where we have just about the toughest censoreship laws anywhere in Europe) I doubt I will ever get to see it.

    Verhoeven HIGHLY overated...

    by thoreau

Oh, come on, did you even see "hollw man"?
What a piece of trash that was...a complete lack of the exploration of how cool it'd be to be invisible, turned into a cheap aliens knock-off by the end.

Verhoeven would make this into exactly what harry said this wasn't...an exploitation of sex and violence. It sounds like this film has real character, unlike the crap verhoeven has been making recently.

troopers had its moments, but some of the character interaction outside the fighting was ridiculous and nonsensical...

I'd love to see an american remake, with someone who can do character as well as violence...

    Battle Royale

    by magicaspar

WOW....That was the wierdest begining to a movie trailer. A girl having a knife planted in her head. Wow...I wonder how it would look on the screen. Too bad we'll never know...unless some godsend takes over and brings it here. And, if they do, add subtitles. No dub, please!!!

    Maybe...

    by poxyvonsinister

... this will never get released here because it looks like the only audience it will get are the dozen or so Talkbackers who actually want to see the movie. Like it or not, distributors are not in business to crusade for Harry's right to watch Japanese movies. They're in business to make money, and if I was a distributor, I could see having reservations about this. No one is saying the movie should be banned in this country, but that seems to be the argument Harry is trying to make. Personally, I could care less about this film, so I'm not losing sleep over it.

    Anchor Bay, Are You Listening?

    by pilcrow

If the good folks at Artisan won't release this on DVD, then Anchor Bay should grab it. They can easily sell 5-10,000 of these. And if Anchor Bay doesn't want it, maybe Image will pick it up. And while we're on the fantasy DVD list, how about streeting Terminator Special Edition this spring instead of this fall. And could we get the Argento cut of Dawn of the Dead in Region 1 already?

Trailer description + Good Old-fassion Letter campaign?

    by x1357

Hey folks. Okay: because I'm blind, and reading this thing with lynx, with Dos as an platform, I can't access the wonderful trailers of which you bastards so happily gush. Could someone post a description? My japanese sucks, but I'd be willing to attempt a translation provided some one who actually knows what they're doing is unavailable. As well, does anyone think that given the volitile nature of this flick, a public campaign, aimed inall likelyhood at Artisan would serve any purpose at this point?

    Takeshi's Castle Rules!

    by chen_san!

YEah, it is the funniest damned thing I have ever seen! THe premise is that this general that looks like a Japanese Ricardo Montalban wants to break into Kitano's castle, with the help of 107 Japanese people who are gradually eliminated. Through events like being faced with four doors, (three of which are bricked over), people will run headfirst into the doors, which are actually brick walls, and it is hilarious! It's really popular in Germany for some reason, and that's where most of the fan sites are. This is a pretty good one, for all those curious...http://www.fortunecity.com/tatooine/picard/444/ It's been the best one I can find, and now, Limited Twat is playing on the hi-fi.

THIS is what all the fuss is about?

    by mr_intimidation

Give me a break. it looks like a bad Roger Corman direct-to-video crapfest. Maybe I'm wrong, but then again, I've never been much of a fan of the Japanese outside of Mister Kurosawa. P.S. Why are people up in arms about this movie's supposed violence? Look, folks, these are the JAPANESE! They're the same people who makes CARTOONS with monsters from outer space with large tentacles that RAPES little girls and releases it into the public theaters instead of shoveling it in some dark porno backroom like us shy Americans! Do you really expect anything LESS from these guys?

long time no see round these parts. by shnogul

I didn't write much here lately. I'm more interested in your mails, more constructive... when I finally read the previous article 'bout BR and discovered where the discussion was going off topic, t'was to late... I just had time to post one message and it was gone... in fact the only thing I'm interested in Harry's notes for the moment would be his statement about the mysterious alternate LOTR trailer that just showed up on the net.
    http://sydney.citysearch.com.au/movies/lot_rings100.ram
every LOTR sites reported it, but Harry remains mute... either it's a fake... either it's legit. If so, it reveals some weird pics (Gollum + a Troll)... Please Harry, tell us it's a fake!

I could be wrong, but I'm guessing not. D'oh!
