Levil takes in a screening of SUPERTROOPERS!!!

Published at:  Feb 17, 2001 10:06:31 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with our man Levil who sneaked a peek at the test screening of SUPER TROOPERS.... You see folks, even though the film is complete and has played Sundance, the studio... FOX SEARCHLIGHT is conducting test screenings to discover how wide a market they have... to what audience the film appeals to. And then there is always the chance that if they did a little tweaking... but Naaaaah, from the sound of the reports we've had on this one so far... I'd say it is a pretty darn tootin good chance that this film won't suffer any post-festival changes, cuz it sounds mighty funny as is. Here ya go....

About two weeks ago I got invited to a test screening
of a film called Super Troopers. With a name like
that I almost opted not to see it, but after reading
some good reviews on your site about different
festivals playing it, I figured why not check it out.

It was fucking funny.

You had said that this film would be a huge success if
it got a distributor... looks like Fox Searchlight
grabbed it. I'm not sure when it will be released, no
one at the test screening said, but this is the type
of film that can totally find a cult following, maybe
even bigger.

On the sheet, they liked the film to Police Academy...
but this is way funnier than that. It is a comedy
about state troopers in Vermont, and that's about
it... plot in these kinds of films don't really matter
anyway. It was written by some comedy troupe named
Broken Lizard, I've never heard of them, but I'll
definitely be on the lookout for their name. The
jokes in this film come at such a fast clip that I'm
sure I missed half of them due to the loudness of the
crowds laughter. The opening scene especially is one
of the funniest comedic scenes that has ever
kick-started a film. And most movies, if they do have
a great opening, totally end up losing steam as they
go along. Not the case with Super Troopers.

The thing about this film is that it's not going to be
easy to get people to see it. This year there are so
many big comedies coming out, that it would be really
easy to forget about this one. It was definitely low
budget, and it's not the slickest thing out there, but
it has the comedic spirit of say 'Strange Brew,' where
you know the actors must have had a lot of fun making
this film. I really hope that there are more
screenings of this, and that more buzz can be
generated about this film. It would be great if this
was a huge success, seeing that films like American
Pie 2 and Scary Movie 2 with built in audiences are
just getting made just to make money. It would show
people that you don't need a big budget or big stars
to still make a damn good film.

I am really tempted to give away some of the funnier
parts, but that would totally spoil it. This is the
type of film that after you see it, you just want to
tell everyone about it. It's old school, old
fashioned raunchy comedy, the kind that gets quoted
years later.

So I'm just writing to get the word out, contribute to
the buzz. Don't be put off by the title, if you have
the opportunity, see Super Troopers.

call me,

-Levll-

Yeah I heard this movie is funny and stuff. It's like, funny. There's this part where this dude gets hit in the head with a penis of some sort and it was funny. I saw only a little bit. But it was funny. You all should go see it. Yeah. And stuff.

And I have a good chance, since I bet they'll release it in summer, I live near an indie-friendly theater during the summer, and I live in Vermont year-round.
    I hate Abba too.

    These guys are funny

I saw their previous film Puddle Cruiser at the IFFM four years ago and was certain it would get picked up for distribution, but it didn't. It was hilarious and extremely well made on a very low budget, easily the best film at the market. I'm glad this one has a distributor and hoping it does well. These guys certainly deserve it.
