Behind the Scenes of 13 GHOSTS! A frightfully gory Experience!

Published at:  Feb 13, 2001 4:49:13 AM CST

Hey folks and fans of Fangoria-styled joy.... Have I got a treat for you! I had no desire to really see 13 GHOSTS the moment I heard Matt Lillard was a part of the cast... and it was only the addition of Tony Shalhoub that interested me... but I feared that I would not get to see near enough of him... and way too much of Matt.... But after checking out these amazing behind the scene gore and make-up shots taken by our on-set spy.... well.... well now ya couldn't keep me away. Director Steve Beck has been a part of some amazing visual effects crews designing some of the scenes we geeks go to sleep with in our noggins... But very very rarely does a director appear from the visual effects medium that can then make a great or even fun flick... Maybe it's the usual lack of budget they are faced with delivering magical effects from... but here, KNB seems to have made some amazingly cool visual makeup and attachments to give a unique flair to these ghosts.... Now, will they appear as we see them here? Or will they be all bluish or whitish in a see-through fashion? Well only time will tell.... Till then only our triumphant host, the Ghost Observer can tell us more! Here ya go....

Harry,

On October 26, 2001, the remake of William Castle's 1960 film "13 Ghosts"
opens. F. Murray Abraham is a ghost collector. When he dies, he wills his
mansion to his nephew, played by Tony Shalhoub, and his kids (Shannon
Elizabeth & Alec Roberts). He soon begins to find out that the ghosts his
uncle collected haunt the mansion. He also learns why he has collected them
and why there needs to be thirteen. But who wants to wait till then to see
the ghosts, when you can see them now. I was a part of the crew and I was
amazed with the quality of special makeup effects headed up by Howard Berger
and KNB EFX Group. This movie is gonna kick ass. It was creepy just being
on set with all these freaks walking around. Matthew Lillard and Embeth
Davidtz work for the uncle and Rah Digga is Tony's nanny. There is a hell
of a lot of visual effects in this movie.

Steve Beck, who has been visual
effects art director on such films as "The Abyss" and "Indiana Jones and the
Last Crusade", is the first-time director.

The mansion in this film is the
story here. You haven't seen anything like it. It is basically a
three-story glass mansion which has rooms that shift, like a Rubik's Cube.
It took 40 guys five weeks to build this thing. The house contains over 45
tons of steel and more than 2500 pieces of full-length glass. It sort of
reminds me of the movie "Cube", except this is like a regular house, with
hallways and rooms full of furniture. All the walls are engraved with Latin
text.

One of the ghosts (Suicide Woman) appears 100% nude for the entire
film. Yeehah!

Below is a bunch of photos I took:

Anonymously Yours,

Ghost Observer...

Daniel Wesley as Headless Torso (In the movie, his head
will be digitally removed)

Mikhael Speidel as Boy with Arrow

13 G's Baby Sit.jpg = C. Ernst Harth as Big Baby

Laura Mennell as Bound Woman

John DeSantis as The Breaker

Herbert Duncanson as The Hammer

Shayne Wyler as The Jackal

13 G's Jean.jpg = Kathryn Anderson as Jean (She is the mother of Shannon &
Alec's characters. She had died when their house burned down.)

Xantha Radley as the Pilgrimess

13 G's Teenage.jpg = Craig Olejnik as '50s Teenage Boy

This picture has all the ghosts that appear in the film
(As you'll notice, there is only 12 ghosts. You'll find out why in the
movie)

These last two are a couple shots of the
back of the mansion. The mansion is top secret, thus it was very hard to
get any good pictures. The wooden stairs you see are not part of the set,
this was just where the actors entered the area. The set continues on for
about 30 feet (it was huge) and it was SO hot in there. Think about the
logistics of shooting in a house where every wall reflects. They had so
many lights in there. The entire crew had to wear black just to cut down on
the reflections.

    Nightbreed

    by lupe

um. Long time listener first time talkbacker etc.
I love a good Horror flick and houses with moving rooms hit some primal note in my psyche, so this sounds cool.
However is it me or do those makeup effects remind anyone else of the work done on nightbreed.
Don't get me wrong I actually have quite a soft spot for nightbreed but whilst the makeup looked wonderful off screen, when it went on screen they decided to cover everything in slime and for some reason lost allot of the realism.
    just a thought.

Crap, absolute crap. Everyone who voted for Gladiator on anything other than acting should get a slap upside the head. And no Michael Douglas for Wonder Boys? For shame Oscar, for shame.

    by badashe

I am a fan of the KNB effects group and I gotta believe that there is a reason that these ghosts look like they are getting ready for their 8th grade Halloween parade at school. Hopefully, this movie will fall into the same category as Jackson's The Frighteners. Remember the ghost make-up in that one (aside from the Grim Reaper effects) was pretty over the top. Also, bonus points for anyone that can name the Simpson's episode that spawned my Subject for this post.

    House on Haunted Hill.....

    by jarek

I am probably one of the only people who thoroughly enjoyed House on Haunted Hill... I even have the DVD, which is kick ass by the way! Anyway, on the DVD it says that the company that made HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (Dark Castle) will be remaking a lot of William Castle's old horror flicks under Joel Silver. Anyway, does anyone know if 13 GHOSTS is a Dark Castle production? Cause if it's as tense as House was, it'll kick ass.....

    by smilin'jack ruby

I love that movie and the DVD and can't wait for 13 Ghosts. KNB strikes again even though that's not what the ghosts will actually look like in the movie. And is it just me, or how much does The Hammer resemble one of those new Clive Barker Tortured Souls characters? People are getting a thing for big guys with railroad spikes stuck in their shoulders and arms. And those shots of the house only give a glimpse of how cool it really is.

How dare you steal my crack about Spencer Gifts. Plus - I find it interesting that security wouldn't let this "on-the-set spy" near the mansion, but had no problem letting him snap full color photos of the cast in makeup (even having them posed together in the last photo).

Yeah Harry as Big Baby rocks the haunted house! *SPOILER BE WARN

    by bari umenema

I'm guessing here that the 13th Ghost is supposed to be a family member and that the dozen ghosties are determined to turn one of the family into their 13th member. The Breaker and The Hammer look like fun, maybe we should just offer up Knowles right now as our sacrificial 13th victim, assuming Harry hasn't already been cast as Big Baby. Sure looks like HK with a buzz cut. Happy Haunting kiddies.

    by brooklyn bred

Will she run around with bulging eyes screaming, "Ooh Lawdy me! Dey's ghosts in dis here howse! I's ah scared!" But besides being fascist, this movie looks really bad! The ghosts remind me of the cheesy ghosts from the old Haunted Mansion attraction and Brigadine Castle in Long Branch New Jersey back in the 80's.

    by dr. channard

Sheesh - the ghosts were scarier in the ORIGINAL, for crying out loud! Who needs a "headless torso" when you can have a lion tamer complete with ghost LION chomping on his neck stump? And since when can a big fat man (dressed in a diaper, for chrissakes) compete with a SCREAMING BURNING SKELETON? Ahhhh, thiis pisses me off - and more cenobite rip-offs? What's with THAT? It's bad enough the goddam Borg get away with it, now we have bozo the ghost....

Seriously, can the guy who took these pics get himself in big trouble. I know if this was my set I wouldn't want this guy sending out pictures. Not that i'm complaining - I can't wait for this one. Is it going to be full on horror, or are we to expect a 'mummy' style film - or better yet, another 'Army or darkness.' Lets hope we don't get another 'haunting'.

NO! NO MORE REMAKES! I'm so sick and tired of this "lets take a GOOD movie, remake it with an MTV generation of no-talents, up the budget by 60 billion dollars, and then fumble the ball because hey..who needs a script anyhow?"
WELL NO MORE! I'm standing up against this stupid hollywood machine and saying Kiss my big, pimple filled buttocks you unoriginal bastards! Good grief, why didn't they just ADD 3 ghosts..I would have at LEAST given it a benefit of the doubt. BUTT NOOOO, I mean how long until they remake Casablanc with Freddie Prince and Love Hewitt with Chris Rock as Sam! NO MORE I TELL YOU! I DON'T CARE IF GOD HIMSELF CAME DOWN AND ORDERED ME TO GO, I'M NOT GOING!
Somebody for the love of GOOD movies, WRITE A GOOD MOVIE THAT HASN'T BEEN DOWN! Why is Hollywood upset about a writer's strike, THEY DON'T USE WRITER'S ANYWAY!!!

    Not that impressive... sorry.

    by psyclops

I don't know... this make-up looks kinda... crappy. Other than The Hammer and Jackal, I don't really see anything that doesn't look like it was lifted from your local costume shop. In fact, I've seen children wearing scarier things during Halloween. BUT... that doesn't mean it won't look better in the movie. With some darker settings and a gloomy atmosphere they might actually look frightening. I was one of the few that actually enjoyed 'House on Haunted Hill', mostly because I understood that it was meant to be an entertaining thrill ride... nothing more. It was the perfect Halloween movie! But most of all it was the kind of movie I really hadn't seen since I was a kid! I miss the days of Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street and Evil Dead. I'm thrilled that this upcoming year looks so good in terms of horror films, first Hannibal... next we've got 13 Ghosts, Jason X, Bones, House of 1000 Corpses, Jurassic Park 3 (not horror, but still genre related) and my favorite video game... Resident Evil! Wait, isn't there supposed to be a 'House of the Dead' movie? OH JOY!!!

Sorry to break it to ya... but, they've already reinvented 'Casablanca' in the form of the ridiculous Pamela Anderson sci-fi bomb 'Barb Wire'. Seriously, the story was taken... um,...'inspired' by the classic Bogart film.

    Not QUITE in 3D

    by la_bob

Well, I thought the "House..Hill" remake was boring once you got past the Nine Inch Nails-ripped credit sequence. And this 13 Ghosts makeup? Can you say "The Bumfutz County JC's Annual Haunted House for Charity"? Yeecchh.

But the real reason I'm writing is to be anal and point out that the original 13 Ghosts was NOT in 3D. It used a viewer with one widescreen-shaped blue filter, and one red filter.

During the ghosts sequences, the spirits were blue tinted on the film so you looked through the blue filter to hide them and the red to see them. It worked well, unlike the current B/W prints that appear on TV and have you wondering what the F* are those transparent blobs on the screen?

I'm also proud to say that I STILL HAVE my original viewer somewhere around the house. (There are times when I love the insightful, prescience child I was who knew enough to keep stuff like that...) :-)

For fans of the first movie...

    by smilin'jack ruby

...the remake has virtually nothing in common with the first feature in the slightest. The "House on Haunted Hill" remake didn't have very much to do with the original either. As for those who said that there weren't writers on this, Neal Marshall Stevens, Todd Alcott, James Gunn, and Richard D'Ovidio all wrote on this and for the guy who said William Castle sucks - FUCK YOU! Castle, Arkoff, Corman, H.G. Lewis, these guys are my heroes. Does "13 Ghosts" have the potential to be utter shit? Yes, but it's one of only a handful of movies I'm looking forward to this year.

    Welp, I've decided

    by 2gold

I'm going to write a film "inspired" by Night of the Living Dead. Only THIS time it will be about a group of hard ex-cons lead by Bill Cosby out to kill N-Sync during the Super Bowl. Freddie Prince Jr will star as a no-talent actor who learns of the plan and decides to stop them so the free press may keep his next movie from bombing. It will be a gripping edge of your seat thriller with a budget of $75 million dollars all of which will go to the voiceover man who will try his hardest to make Freddie sound like a credible actor. Harry can star as the Super Bowl itself.

    Same old stupid makeup

    by seward

Why can't these effects "wizards" come up with something a little more realistic? It's all just the same old obvious surface ornament. The photos I've seen from high-speed car and plane crashes show a great deal more invasive injury. Limbs are torn off, bone and sinew are exposed in unexpected ways, etc. Multiple compound fractures are typical. Faces are sometimes turned to fleshy mounds. Bring one of those to life and I'll start to get scared. This stuff is for the kiddies.

But only if they cast Chris Rock as Rick. "I said GET ON THE PLANE BITCH, you think I'm gonna want your white ass mopin all over the place around here after Captain Aryan over there takes off, you dumb crackerheadedmotherfucker? Go on, GO! Now where's Louis, him and I gonna be friends. Louis, get over here and toss my salad!"

    13 Ghosts

    by pickyflickprick

I LOVE horror movies-Yet I agree, The last few attempts have been"not great" If "HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL" had been given a better script, with more real scares rather than a lot of "Special Effects"(However Good). And better acting. You could've had a great flix-Let's hope they've learned from their mistakes and "13 GHOSTS" delivers what it promises-A GOOD SCARE. And a giggle or two(Maybe?)
