Father Geek received the following dispatch from downtown Hollywood's infamous Ms. Anonymous this afternoon...
Stephan Elliott, who wrote and directed "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen
of the Desert" is busy writing a comedy in the same vein called "The
Singing Margarida"(daisy in Portugese, but "the Latin of aint it cool news
would know that, you're in Brazil!) It is the first comedy that he has written
since Priscilla. It is a musical/comedy set in Los Angeles and Brazil.
Salma Hayek came into our Sunset Blvd. offices with Stephan and the producer, Joe Simon. I
don't know exactly what her involvement is. Joe produced "Richard the Third".
Stephan's last movie was "Eye of the Beholder".
Priscilla has made over 200,000,000 million on DVD, video, etc. The album
sold over 12 million copies and relaunched the career of Abba.
Drag queens in Brazil.
Ms. Anonymous(please!!)
Por primera vez Los Rabanes con Sting y Ruben Blades en Panama... yes thats right actor Ruben Blades, Sting and the Rabanes all recently shared the stage down in Panama... check out the report below...
For the first time since its inauguration, the imposing Estadio Nacional in Panamá
reached its full capacity with a line up that included national pop-rock sensation
Los Rabanes. The band behind "Commanding Wife", was the opening act at this huge
spectacle, and with their usual energetic performance made the audience dance
till they dropped. More than 25,000 people sang along the tune of their new hits,
which included their latest single, "Perfidia", as well as some of their old
ones. Some time later, following a performance by Ruben Blades, they all came
onstage at Sting's request, to close the event.
The Panama audience was euphoric
seeing their favorite local idols onstage alongside the legendary Sting. Los
Rabanes continue their conquest of new territories, consolidating their Latin
fusion, taking it as far as Europe. This week they headlined the Rock Latino
event at the infamous MIDEM Cannes 2001, where they caused great impact in the
multi-ethnic audience at the Palais de Festivals Croisette. After their short
stay in Europe, Los Rabanes ready themselves for a new promotional tour throughout
Latin America which will include countries, such as Argentina, Mexico, among
others.
Here's a scoop that came to Father Geek from Sweden about a movie about a Brazilian fighting style called Capoeira. I'll never stop being amazed at the way this site works. A guy in Sweden who I have never heard of gets an E-mail from Hollywood about a film about Brazil and sends it to me in Austin, Texas. I post it here and YOU, whoever and where ever you are, are reading it now along with millions of others around the world. That's just extremely cool.
This is my first scoop. - If you use it, call me Rubycon. I'm from Sweden so
I might just spell some things wrong. (I know there are som talkbackers who
just loves to check on your spelling)
This might be the first you hear about a cool action film that we all will
be waiting to watch in the summer of 2002. Or maybe you will believe me
because the actor choosen to play the lead role is not the one you might
visualize flying kicking through the air.
As an answer to a question I asked, I got an email from a guy at Dreamworks.
He told me there is a movie in production that will be all about Capoeira
and it's history. A research and development team is in Brazil right now for
info gathering. For those of you unfamiliar with capoeira I can give you
this interesting information: Capoeira is a brazillian martial art. It's
sort of like dancing mixed with kicks and acrobatics. Capoeira developed
from various tribal dances brought by slaves to central america. If you have
seen "Only the strong" you know what I'm talking about. (too bad the movie
sucks though)
The director will be John Woo wich gives me some mixed feelings. I'm afraid
John will use too much wires to illustrate the wild gravity-defying
acrobatics that Capoeira is. But my source assured me that they will only
use wires to help unexperienced fighters perform natural looking movements.
Much like they did in Matrix. And we all know: John Woo can make great
action.
Dreamworks will try to trace the roots of Capoeira back to the beginning and
connect it to a story about a poor kid from brazil. So, who will play the
lead role in this film....well belive it or not, Cuba Gooding Jr. According
to my source Cuba is a very talented capoeirista.
Lastly. This will not be a movie only for capoeiristas. It will not be a
documentary. It will be an explosive action flick with lots of wild martial
arts and blood. It will be a movie that anyone can enjoy.

Father Geek back again, this time with an E-mail about the USA release dates for Amores Perros, good news for our stateside readers... thanks to LOBO for forwarding this to all of us...
Hola lobo, I got this e-mail from the amores perros web site, basically it mentions the movie will be in the states on march 30th in NY & LA, and on april 13th in 30 cities, i'm just glad they are showing it in san antonio, didn't feel like watching a fine movie like this down in nuevo laredo, and it goes on to say that the dvd will be released in mexico soon, but on region 4 encoding, but the vhs is still avaliable for those who can not wait, and know spanish. It then goes on about the soundtrack being avaliable in the states, finally. I found it at hogwild here in san antonio, they have a copy waiting for me today to buy. But i found it at most online shops. And finally they mention that they are waiting for the anouncements for the oscars, there has not been a mexican movie nominated in 37 years, and they ask to light a candle to your favorite saint. oh and one more thing, a english version of the amores perros web site will be up soon.
" Pa. Pa."
And here's another E-mail LOBO forwarded to me tonight...
Dear LOBO,
I am a great fan of your work and since you sometimes publish links to
informative or entertaining websites on the internet I thought you might
be interested in my website on the upcoming movie "Frida Kahlo"
starring Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas, Ashley Judd and Edward Norton.
The movie will certainly raise interest as it's an ambitious project about the life
of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo which will compete with the biopic starring
Jennifer Lopez. The production is definitely worth a news story.
I've put a lot of work into FridaMovie.com and have tried to make it as
extensive and detailed as possible. The site will be updated weekly and features
news on the process of the production, pictures from the set and in-depth
information on the actors and the real characters as well as links.
FridaMovie.com is a website by fans for fans and it will serve not only
as a source of information and entertainment but also as a gathering point
for a global community of film and art lovers.
I would be honored if you mentioned my site and would certainly link back
to you/give credit to you.
Please take a look at FridaMovie.com!
