What up movie lova's! It is Sam, and this weekend I had the pleasure of viewing ON THE BASIS OF SEX.
ON THE BASIS OF SEX hit the big screens on December 25, 2018. I know, I know...I am late to the party, but I have arrived to let you know it was good. Take a peek at the trailer:
The film was directed by Mimi Leder and is a biopic that gives an account of Ruth Ginsburg as a wife, Harvard student, mother and forerunner in the 1975 Supreme Court case for women's equality. Felicity Jones plays Ruth Ginsburg, and Armie Hammer plays Martin Ginsburg. The two actors deliver quality performances of devoted spouses who support one another through a life-threatening medical scare, parenting tribulations, and monumental career choices.
The screenplay written by Daniel Stiepelman gives the audience an account of Ruth Ginsburg from various perspectives. At Harvard, we see Ginsburg through Dean Griswold (Sam Waterson) who perceives no relevance of a woman attending the prestigious university. Devoted husband Marty gives the audience insight in regards to why Ruth has become the woman she is, because of the relationship she shared with her mother. And Jane, Ruth's teenage daughter shows us character flaws that both challenge and affirm Ruth's purpose. It was interesting to see Ginsburg through a kaleidoscope of views that added greater depth to her character giving the audience greater insight into her colossal strength and fortitude.
Beyond that visually you will be taken on a journey through time beginning in the '50s and progressing through the mid-'70s. The costume and set designers are to be applauded. The clothing and accessories were fabulous. Jewelry lova's keep your eyes on the pearl earrings Ruth wore at a cocktail party she attended with her husband. They are stunning.
The design sets all the way down to the textiles on the furniture and wallpaper selection were outstanding. I especially loved the flower wallpaper on her Ginsburgs client, Charlie's wall. There was even a classic 70's Cosmopolitan billboard that was quite impressive. Did anyone identify who that actually was?
Well, if you like legal dramas, I am definitely recommending this film. Especially, if you like underdog stories where the main character defies social norms and follows their heart. The film is two hours long but considering it is an essential reflection of U.S. history...I didn't care. Before seeing this film, I had no idea just how many laws existed regarding what a woman couldn't do. And just how contradictory is it that the equality of women was won through the suffrage of a man?
That being said I only have one complaint about the movie. In one critical scene reasonably early in the film, the couple Martin and Ruth cry together. Well, at least they tried because I did not see any tears. Apparently, these two never attended the Deidre Hall school of crying.
When it comes to crying on queue no one did it like Marlena Evan's from Days of our Lives. Other than that, ON THE BASIS OF SEX was worth the watch.
