Gotham 5.1 FAQ

What’s it called?
“Year Zero.”

Who’s responsible?
Teleplay is credited to John Stephens (“The OC,” “Gossip Girl”).

What says Fox?
“Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne face the chaos Gotham City has become. Their mission to keep the city safe becomes more complicated as the villains who survived the attack on the city begin to resurface and claim various territories. Meanwhile, Selina Kyle grapples with how to deal with her uncertain future.”

How does it start?
“No Man’s Land: Day 391.” A phonograph in Riddler’s office plays “We’ll Meet Again.” A pair of rose-colored glasses adorn Penguin’s face. Harvey Bullock pours himself a drink. Gordon exits his office wearing armor. Then we jump back to Day 87.

Is there a Batman?
Bruce Wayne spends the episode dressed in black leather, or perhaps pleather, but there’s no cowl or bat on his chest.

The big news?
Someone is kissed goodbye, possibly forever, or until some future episode in which he or she is injected with something by Hugo Strange.

Is Dr. Strange lurking about?
Not this week. Others who fail to appear this week include Jeremiah Valeska, Ra’s Al Ghul, Bane, Butch Gilzean, Harvey Dent, Renee Montoya, Nathanial Barnes, Ivy Pepper, Sofia Falcone, Valerie Vale, Victor Szasz, Dick Grayson and Leslie Thompkins.

What else is Fox not telling us?
Jeremiah Valeska has been missing for three months.

This is the first episode since May. Can you remind us of what happened?
Riddler stabbed Lee Thompkins. Penguin killed Butch. Ra’s turned to dust. Jeremiah The Joker blew up big chunks of the city and paralyzed Catgirl.

Is Gordon commissioner yet?
He refers to himself as Captain Gordon.

What’s good?
Ed Nygma fighting back. The mysterious voice from beyond the river. Robin Lord Taylor’s Penguin scream. The future-looking prologue.

What’s not so good?
This isn’t as funny as a lot of the better episodes. The No Man’s Land gang war makes me kind of drowsy. And Morena Baccarin is sorely missed. The federal government’s decision to abandon the city is a head-scratcher; don’t a lot of voters live in Gotham City?

How does it end, spoiler boy?
“Suit up,” says Gordon.

8 p.m. Thursday. Fox.
