Today I am here with a long lost cinematic gem recently rediscovered and now being shared with the world. The first cinematic representation of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein." This short film from 1910 was made by produced by Edison Studios (as in Thomas Edison!) and directed by J. Searle Dawley ("An American Citizen," "Rich Man, Poor Man," "The Valentine Girl," "Bluebeard," and many others).
The Frankenstein film sourcebook describes the short film as-
"While he is in college, Frankenstein decides he must attempt to make a perfect human being. The being he creates is given life in a vat of burning chemicals. On the day Frankenstein weds his sweetheart, who has been living patiently at home, he sees the monster he created reflected in a mirror. Having disappeared, the monster returns to his creator to gain acceptance. However, when the creature is in front of the mirror he disappears again, with only his slowly vanishing reflection left. When Frankenstein arrives and stands in front of the same mirror he witnesses the fading image, signifying the monster's destruction in the face of Frankenstein's increased love for his wife and life"
Here is the short film as restored in 2017 by the Library of Congress National Audio-Visual Conservation Center, with new music by Donald Sosin (posted here with permission from the composer)
And here is another version of the classic short this time it is a more cleaned up version, with yet another new soundtrack. The following video took the original restoration and applied stabilization and a little digital cleanup to further enhance the film. Additionally, they were able to compile a new modern-styled horror score thanks to the generosity and skill of the following composers:
