Big Eyes Hears the CALL OF CTHULHU

Happy Halloween, geeks and ghouls!

I’d like to share with you guys an epically awesome indie game that scared the pants off of me! From Cyanide Studio and Focus Home Interactive, the CALL OF CTHULHU is an investigative RPG, but don’t let that label fool you. The game is positively spooky, and feels as Lovecraftian as it should!

The game is about a drunkard (I guess that part is up to you but it’s totally what I went for) detective given a case with very unusual details surrounding finding a man’s daughter. So you travel to a remote island off of the coast of Boston called Darkwater to begin your case. There, you are met with sailors of superstition, a spooky omen, and a dark and dreary Lovecraftian environment.

I was going to begin by comparing the game to LAYERS OF FEAR, since there is a lot of walking and interacting with your environment, but that would sell the game short of what it actually is. Don’t get me wrong, I love LAYERS OF FEAR too! Instead of being alone in your character’s thoughts, there are a lot of people to speak with and cinematic scenes that deepen the mystery you are investigating, all whilst trying not to go mad! MWUAHAHA!!

Yes, and of course, this is one of those games that has an insanity meter. If you know anything about Lovecraft, you’ll know it’s all about cultists, demonic creatures, and losing your mind even gazing upon the latter.

There are some puzzles you must solve to get through, for the most part they aren’t that challenging. A lot of your interactions directed by the skills you have built up, much like the FALLOUT games. For example, if you’re low on skills such as Occultism or Psychology, you won’t always be able to choose certain options to progress a conversation the way you would like.

I had the worst luck, or should I say found most frustrating, was the first battle with The Shambler. It’s kind of unclear what to do, but I found myself also too nervous to concentrate because it was pretty scary.

CALL OF CTHULHU was exactly what I was hoping for in a scary game. It wasn’t all puzzle, talking to people, or fighting. It was all three, plus more, keeping the player on their toes and definitely being anything but repetitive.

If you’re looking for a nice horror game for the season this year, this is it! CALL OF CTHULHU is out NOW on PS4, XBONE, and PC!
