Hey folks, here's some interesting news... the movie version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's CATS has just cast four leads.
Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift, James Corden, and Ian McKellen are set to star in the adaptation. Lee Hall (BILLY ELLIOT) adapted it, and Tom Hooper (THE KING'S SPEECH) will direct.
While no roles have been named yet, it's likely that McKellen is playing Old Deuteronomy, and equally likely that Hudson will play Grizabella for a bring-down-the-house version of 'Memory'.
This could look like a modern update of this, and just be... well... something really bizarre to modern kids, like scary clown nightmare stuff:
(Incidentally, that's Terrance Mann as Rum Tum Tugger... he also played the bad-ass alien bounty hunter from CRITTERS, and had an acclaimed career headlining Broadway shows.)
But I am hoping against hope that they will instead do a motion-capture performance of the actors performing, and apply it to what appears to be real, if a bit extraordinary, CGI cats.
Granted.... maybe that's a dumb idea... comical even... but the thought of James Corden, or even Taylor Swift, in the original production greasepaint is leaving me a little... meh.
