Cool News
The PTA X-4 news is beginning to trickle!
Alright folks, Harry here.... Add a couple of new actors to the list of folks appearing in the Mysterious X-4! Man... Sounds like the cover is inching off of PTA's latest... Soon we'll have pics of Adam Sandler in the Duck Dodgers uniform! Muahahahahahaa!!!!
FYI--
John Stewart isn't on the Daily Show tonight b/c he's out in LA shooting the PT Anderson movie. So is Robert Smigel.
Go figure.
Check you later,
IngemarAnd then we got this report about where they are shooting and when...
Dearest Harry,
First off, I love the site! Second off--and I don't know if this is any help
to ya--last night around 10:30 I accidentally ran into a PA working on PT
Anderson's new picture. I and a beautiful lady friend drove into the parking
lot of the Pacific movie theater at the Northridge Fashion Center and
noticed a bright sign in the parking lot that read "X-4", with an arrow
below the words (obviously directions for a shoot's parking). So I asked a
nice lady standing in the parking lot if the sign had anything to do with
PT's new picture. She was a bit surprised to hear that I knew what X-4
meant, but gave me a couple of small details concerning the movie's shooting
schedule...
She said that the current scene was being filmed at a house just down the
street (near Shirley and Plummer, in NR) and that they'd be shooting all
over the Valley during the next 3 weeks. She was very friendly, but wouldn't
give anything more than that and the fact that she was one of the last of
the crew to go home for the night. Oh well, would've loved to hear a tidbit
or two. :)
On a possibly-related note, a strip of Devonshire near Tampa has been closed
off all day today. That area is just down the street from the aforementioned
movie theater and seems to be used for films quite a bit.

And why do I suddenly care?
-
And is it because you're an asshole? Christ you firsties never cease to make me laugh in utterly condescending contempt....Anyways....I sure hope PTA knows what he's doing with Happy....the thoughts of Sandler trying to seriously act make me want to give myself a root canal for some reason....but we could all be wrong....
-
I have cried tears of joy. JOY! These new actors make me happier then a barrel full of really happy things! God Bless you Mr. Anderson, god bless you.

For I am the Black Jesus.

You people who get so mad at the firsties make ME laugh! I mean, come on, why do you CARE so much?

I just love movies that are shot in the valley, it has so much culture and looks so beautiful on film, I just hate that this guy is doing it. I liked Boogie Nights, it wasn't my fare, but I enjoyed it. Then came Magnolia. I rented it...and strained while watching the first tape. But after the first 15 minutes of the second tape, I ejected it and rushed to Hollywood video in hopes I'd get my dollar credit on new releases when returned within 24 hours. IN MY OPINION, I thought that had to be one of the more pointless and mind numming movies I've ever seen. (BTW...I did make the deadline and get my dollar credit! Woohoo!)
-
I love Adam Sandler, I am glad he is working with PTA, I am glad Jon Stewart is in it, I am glad Robert Smigel in it (TV FUNHOUSE IS DELICIOUS AND NUTRITIOUS!) but I feel crappy that PTA wants this movie to be kept under wraps and some exhausted production assistant ended up getting snowed by some goofball and his "lovely lady" (yeah, I bet he had a sportscar and a small wang too!) Someone should reiterate to everyone working on this movie to keep it on the down low, freaks like me are "robots who are seeking information"! Crazy love, baby.

Hmmm...why doesn't anyone here like PTA? Are you guys retarded??? You people like kubrick (who is totally overrated and you all just like him because all the so-called film buffs say that you should) and not PTA??? Magnolia kickes some major ass...Boogie Nights was awesome...Hard Eight was cool...PTA is one of the best young directors in Hollywood...he is also a kick ass writer...
...you people are morons... -

I did however love heather grahmns breasts and i really love Aimme mann. Magnolia was actually very good, no i really liked it just at times it hit you over the head to hard with its "symbolizim." FIrst of all -- Black Jesus is a genius and his post proves it. Think I'm kidding?.. only Black Jesus knows. Rob Smigel, John Stewart... these are names that make people who know true talent cream in their pants at the mere mention (you're next biiiitch). Funny how the "talk backers" whine like cows destined for the slaughterhouse every time truly great directors take a "chance" like casting Sandler in a movie... oh sorry I guess we mistook you for genuine human beings and not reactionary morons who emmediately dismiss a movie just because a guy called Adam Sandler is in it. Right now the lesbian next door is fucking a GUY in a way that would make Gregory Dark take notice.... who knew. Sounds like she's having a better time than with her girlfriend.
So I guess George W being sworn in behind bullet proof glass and the echoing chants of protesters means we're in for a helluva ride? Oh yeah... to the guy who said "we" only like Kubrick because we've been told to... enjoy your Power Rangers reruns, you deserve 'em. Chump. -
To see just who his fans are. Magnolia was a right royal disgrace, but quite something compared to Hard 8 and Boogie Nights. Sure, I'm looking forward to his next movie - such overworked fluff is good for a laugh. Now PTA - if you are here - answer this: how much do you really know about film making? Get over your stylisation boy, and what is left? You crying alone in bed at night, knowing that though you're on a roll, lots of people out there know just how poor your movie making actually is?

It pays to be Sandler's friends--just ask Stewart and Smiegel

there's nothing better on TV right now than TV FUNHOUSE. Smigel has me on the floor howling every week. (what was up with the Bob Odenkirk beard situation last night, by the way? he looks like the Pharisee guy in Jeepers Creepers.) Also Jon stewart is a class act dude. He was great in Playing By Heart. So, Smigel and Stewart in a movie by my current fave director is good news. (It also means that PTA is inching closer and closer to the staff of the former best thing on TV: Strangers w/Candy. I'd love to see Amy and her crew onthe big screen.) There's too much hate on this page all the time but especially for PTA. How is he a hack? I mean WTF?
-
I think PTA vs. Kubrick is a moot point, first of all. But since talkbackers love to make that comparison let me axe you this: even if you're a fan of both directors -- whose movies are the most likable and lovable and re-watchable? The answer is as simple as P-T-A. Eyes Wide Shut is a beautiful movie, with gorgeous Christmas lights everywhere and stuff -- but the orgy sequence dra-a-ags on and on. The Shining is excellent, Clockwork Orange is an untouchable classic, and both halves of FMJacket are masterful and gripping. But for my money, Kubrick's movies never come close to the thrilling, joyous FUBARedness of Boogie Nights -- nor does any other movie ever made hit me the way Magnolia did. Los of funny stuff, plus all the heavy weight of guilt and regret on the heads of all those poor fuckers -- then frogs rain down. Anybody who hates it just DON'T GET IT!
-
I'm with Darkseed X. I can't even BEGIN to explain why this comparison is ridiculous. I should just go home giggling. But let me point all you Kubrick naysayers to a little film called Paths of Glory (fuck Spartacus; the studio screwed it up). If you watch it with an open mind, you should realize that Kubrick's films, while cold, are not without emotion. And if you want FUBAR, this movie has it. One of the best (anti)war movies of all time. As for Stanley's failures, I agree--Eyes Wide Shut was a mess. But does one failed film mean a particular artist is overrated or crappy? Come on. If that were so, lots of our respected directors would be forgotten. Even Hitchcock didn't bat 1000. Oh, wait, now somebody's gonna say that we like Hitchcock only 'cause we're told to. Excuse me. Give us a little more credit, please. I could, if I wanted to, argue that PTA is a limited filmmaker, that his adherents like him 'cause he's cool and that they fail to recognize his sources of inspiration. But I won't. If you like him, fine. Just don't bash Kubrick. Dislike his films if you must, but please don't be ignorant and base all your opinions on this (master) filmmaker on Eyes Wide Shut, Full Metal Jacket (it's two two two movies in one, and the first one's better than the second), and the Shining. Open your eyes instead. Watch Paths of Glory. Watch Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. Watch The Killing even. Realize how much the man influenced film. Give a shot at his works beyond the commonly known ones.*sigh* You can like one and the other at the same time. You can also dislike one without bashing his work. Even though I indulged in a little PTA-bashing above, I don't think his work sucks. I think his work is overrated, though I enjoyed both Boogie Nights and Hard Eight (more than the former), and I find the man himself pompous and arrogant in interviews and public appearances. But now I've said more than I ever planned to. And I'm prolly preaching to people who are zealots and cannot be swayed. 'Nuff said.

I get so weary of people telling
me I don't "get" Magnolia. But as
long as it makes them feel better
about themselves, I don't really
mind them stroking their own egos
at my expense. -
This PTA -vs- Kubrick thing has just gotten outta hand, people! I dunno why everybody's ganging up on PTA, he's obviously got talent, or he wouldn't have gotten that fucking amazing performance out of Burt Reynolds (and the rest of the cast) in Boogie Nights, now would he? Kubrick's one of the all-time greats, no need backing that up, I'll just mention A Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket. I'm sure Kubrick is rolling his grave (or urn?), pissed that you're insulting and attacking good young filmmakers in defense of him. Shame.
-
I just wanted to use that subject line, however, Sandler and Anderson = (in the words of Spock) Fascinating...(arches eyebrow, stares into distance).
-
I don't get how the PTA vs. Kubrick thing started either. The two make very different kinds of films, and the way they make them is completely different as well. They're both have PUBLIC egos (I keep referring to Kubrick as if he was still alive, because he will not officially be dead until Spielberg kills him this summer), so what? Could it be that their being labeled 'arrogant' and
'pretentious' has something to do with the fact that they are fucking awesome filmmakers?
-I remember reading somewhere that PTA visited the filming of Eyes Wide Shut when talking with Tom Cruise about Magnolia - PTA said that Kubrick told him that he really liked Boogie Nights. I am sure PTA loves Kubrick's stuff (who doesn't love just at least one of his movies?). Mutual appreciation. See, that's the thing. So what if Kubrick is on this pedestal waaay higher than PTA? So what if people want to elevate PTA to that same kind of status (although I agree it is a bit premature with only three films, as good as they are)? Just like their movies or don't like them. Don't call either of them a 'hack,' because it just makes you look stupid. In fact, if you're going to use a term like that, you should probably explain what you mean (the same for all those who just write - hey, 'this guy is brillant!', etc.). Is anybody going to say WHY they think either of these filmmakers are 'hacks'? I mean, referencing/ripping off stuff from other people's films has been done for generations. PTA takes a lot from Scorsese; Scorsese takes a lot from Michael Powell - what's the difference (I mean, I know there's a difference, but why is it so important?)? -
Ok, film is personal preference and it is retarded to even try and agrue issues like this out. But, I am just upset that no one here likes PTA...yet, you like Kubrick. Kubrick is good and all (though I still think you all just like him because you are "supposed to" or something...did you guys even see "Eyes Wide Shut"??? You have to admit that that movie was a joke...he's a good director...but the movie was a joke...if any other director made that movie...he's be ridiculed beyond belief...the only really good movie that Kubrick made was "Full Metal Jacket"...he didn't do Clockwork Orange novel justice...though it was pretty good). PTA has talent...as a storyteller...something that Kubrick lacks. And they are both good directors...but I would much rather watch Boogie Nights 10 times then watch 2001 twice...you guys are still morons...hahaha.
-
great point about who PTA is actually ripping off and god magnolia is so forced. Anyways EWS wasnt that bad it was an exploration of sex that i doubt was ever really finished, i gurantee that kubrick wasnt done with this edit and that he had a trick or 2 up his sleave. Id rather watch 2001 10 times then booogie nights but the problem would be that i would think to much and my brain would explode with all the revalations i can get from 2001. Only thing that would explode from boogie nights would be my jism from the heather grahmn scene
-
started when P.T. (I'm positive the T stands for 'Tensious', and I'm pretty sure I know what the P stands for too...) was quoted as saying "I don't know if I'd rather be Steven Spielberg or Stanley Kubrick" and many people were quick to point out how much better than he they were by the time they were his age.
Also brought to mind Peter Bogdonavitch comparing his first big movie to Citizen Kane. What's he doing now? I forget.
No, really, I used to remember, but I can't. -
That would be a great title for my autobiography! Thanks ceejaydaysayoddowaysaysyay!
Does kinda suck that the film has been guarded so closely--in that I'm fuckin' curious as hell to know more about it--but at least it gave me a chance to anticipate a film so much that I was driven to harass innocent crew members! I mean, do you realize how long I'd been driving around looking for a helpless PA to snowball? Ahhh, thank god for secrecy in filmmaking. -
I take it all back, you sound like a cool and funny person! So I officially upgrade your wang to medium, and your next rent-a-car will include a free upgrade and a tank of gas on the house. Give my regards to your lovely lady! Happy Driving!

X4 will be another magnificent film from one of the most talented filmmakers living today. With Adam Sandler starring, also one of the most talented men alive, the film is sure to have some hilarious moments. Watch out come Oscar time 2002...
-
Heck yeah! I totally agree with you Nickygoose! Watch out Oscar, somebody's coming to get you!
-
i think comparing these two directors is a grave injustice for both, though they do have many many similarities that it seems most of you have missed. to top it off, their senses of humor are nearly identical, using twisted irony and complex satire to make very valid statements on that current state of our society. who cares if they use different camera angles, write different kinds of dialogue? both these directors surpass that. they are not "filmmakers" but storytellers, and to compare them means to look at something greater than if they are fans of tracking or dutch angles. their stories scream of the same worries and passions for everyday life and mankind on the whole. if you've missed that, then you haven't really been watching their movies in the first place.
