NEW INFORMATION ADDED!!! FROM HELL begins to focus on a release date! NEW INFORMATION!!!
HOLD THE PRESSES!!! I just got off the phone with a spy in the Suit arena of Fox who gave me the lowdown on FROM HELL. Turns out that
studio was shown monday night... as in two nights ago.... FROM HELL at its first screening. Things went very very well, and the studio is set to place FROM HELL on the last weekend of September, thereby giving it the entire month of October to play out... Mr Suit went on to tell me that the ending that the London Tabloids are freaking about... plays almost exactly like the end of the comic by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell.... Now I don't know if you've read that brilliant comic series or not, but there is an alluding to an alternative possible ending to the Ripper tale... That things might be different slightly than the 'official record'. But it doesn't out and out say it in the book.... and apparently it didn't in the film as well. Mr Suit, a long time friend in the suits at Fox, went on to say that film played beautifully. And so far, this suit hasn't lied or deceived me. So we'll see.
All information below this point has been modified by the above.Hey folks, Harry here... It seems that Loony Toon has managed to get Albert Hughes to give him a window for when FROM HELL will be coming out. Right now it is looking like it'll hit in either August or October. September is usually a pretty dead month in films, so there is no wonder they are straddling that month. However, there is something else I'd like to address... I'm getting a ton of emails from people in the UK informing me that there is a bit of an outrage in England about the rumor that the Hughes Brothers are going to let one of the 'Ripper victims' live. Well.... When I visited the set last year, they took me into this Carriage garage type thing on their White Chappel Set and showed me the bodies of the victims. 5 victims. Not only that but they were all in the state that you will see (If you dare) in any of the crime photos from the period. In complete morbid grossness. The Hughes brothers were obsessively committed to bringing realism to this story... even checking the weather reports from the "day's newspapers" and discovering that it wasn't FOGGY on those nights but MISTY. And the crime scenes... the locales where the heinous acts took place? Recreated in exacting detail. So, I don't know what version of the FROM HELL script the British tabloids got ahold of, but my copy doesn't let one of the 5 live. And I severly doubt that Albert or Allen would allow that to happen. Now, here's Loony Toon...

Harry,
Loony Toon here with some interesting news from the world of those cool ass
Hughes brothers and Alan Moore. I recieved an e-mail today from Mr.
Albert Hughes stating that From Hell would be released in either August or
October. Though I'd like to see it as soon as possible it might end up
being a nice Halloween treat.
See ya on the flip side,
Loony Toon.In Response to Celedhring in TALK BACK below. While they shot the movie in the Czech Republic and outside of Prague... They did not shoot any of the London street stuff in Prague, but rather on a set that I can only describe as being astounding. They rebuilt, from scratch in an empty field. A 1:1 scale reproduction of 1888 London WHITE CHAPEL district. Don't believe me? Well, the original artist, Eddie Campbell, from the Alan Moore written FROM HELL got to visit the set as well, and documented the whole thing here: At His Website

That man was supposed to be like 20 years oldie that Depp. Also, I remember that film was shoot in Prague. Everybody who has read the comic will know how CRUCIAL the London geography and its historical buildings are to the story. I also don't know how they can compress the comic to just two hours without butchering it and making somethin COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TO THE COMIC. I fear a lot of things about this movie, but I'll hold my judgement. Making Abberline a pretty boy doesnt help, however.

...If we're talking about what I think we're talking about. Referring to the Ripper's last victim, that is. Too bad so much of the original comic seems to be going out the window (unless there's been a major rewrite).
-
I'm still hope full of his movie and I

He's a real actor. Too bad Graham's not. Hope she doesn't talk too much. They changed Rogue's age for the X-Men and it turned out okay. I don't like it when they change things, either. We'll see. Actually, you guys will see because I've never read the graphic novel on this one. MUST..NOT...SPOIL MOVIE FOR...ONE'S SELF...

In Moore's original "From Hell" before it got adapted into a movie script, the final victim does live. Well, no she doesn't. Someone is killed...it's just not the person that Gull expected to kill...it's complicated, intentionally so...but it's based loosely on real Ripper reports. One person reported seeing Mary...crap, can't remember her last name...anyway, Mary was presumably killed some time in the early evening, and yet someone reported actually seeing her near the very end of the night...it was just written off as mistaken testimony, but Moore crafted something further, alledging that Mary managed to escape by having someone else stay at her place that night. So these reports seem to indicate their sticking kind of close to the comic....a really good idea. -Loki

Depp? Bah. Michael Caine as Frederick Abberline in 88's Jack the Ripper BBC mini-series. That's where it's at.
Depp should play Banner in The Hulk.
From Hell certainly looks intriguing, but with Graham in it, I'm not going to get too excited (although she definitely has the slut-look down.) -
I haven't read the source material, but if the Hughes are sticking with the version of the script I read, Loki's description is accurate.
The corpse thought to be Mary Kelly is in fact someone else. After her "death," Kelly returns to Ireland to rebuild her life. It sounds rather trite but the script pulls it off beautifully.
It should be a fantastic film if it lives up to the script's potential. -

Um, thanks, mythologically named ones, for ruining the ending of

Seriously, was it really neccessary to spell it all out completely, with no SPOILER warning yet? It's a great comic, and it's almost certainly going to be better than the movie. Furthermore, it's a very factually-based story with only a few surprises and "twists" that aren't already part of the historical record. I like Depp but he just isn't right for Abberline, a short, swarthy, middle-aged man at the time of the murders. And what is this nonsense about him being an opium addict? That's LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, not FROM HELL. Look, this might be a passingly interesting movie but from all reports they have structured it as a "Whodunnit", not revealing the killer until the ending and making the story about Abberline. This change COMPLETELY misses the point of the original comic, and makes it impossible to adapt it with any degree of faithfulness, since it's supposed to be a character study of a real person who's suspected to have been the Ripper. It's like making American Psycho about Willem Dafoe's character and not revealing Patrick Bateman as the murderer until the ending. Unless subsequent drafts have completely altered the structure back to the way it's supposed to be, this movie will be "From Hell" in NAME ONLY, and from the sounds of it it'll be a much more tired and cliched plot as well. I'll abstain from identifying the book's Ripper here; it's not supposed to be a secret, but I don't want to ruin even a bastardized movie for anyone. But I'm sure some jerk will post it further down.

If "From Hell" is good (and it damn well should be given its script) why is it being released in the last week of September? Also, why in the fuck was "Fight Club" (one of the coolest films ever) released in mid October instead of summer? Here's a hint boys, war movies come out on Memorial Day, date movies on Valentine's Day, and NOTHING between August and Thanksgiving. I'd like good movies mixed in with the fun ones year round, but the fact is the two season system is still the best since it puts the product out there when the audience is most able and willing to catch it. Come on FOX, get it together and release this puppy during the holidays when people will actually see it.

'From Hell' in my humble opinion is the greatest graphic novel ever written - profoundly effecting, disturbing and very moving. Possibly even a supernatural, magic(K)al experience when you read it a few times. I have been doing my research and they have made Abberline an opium addict AND his wife is dead in the movie. This removes alot of the corrupted nobility of Abberline's decline. Dear hughes Brothers - DO NOT FUCK THIS UP. I do have faith in your abilities to interpret this incredible story, even if you do make big changes. Its the studio Im worried about. If the studios start tampering I will happily act as your very own assassin to protect your vision from the money men. That last sentence was an exaggeration but you get the picture.

Axe that silly Iron Fist flick with Ray Park and up with Luke Cage. Down with the man.

In the report it says that the directors have researched the material and have finally approached it with with definitive realism, i.e. not foggy on the nights of the murder, which is good. But lets hope that at last one Ripper movie gets it right, and portrays the victims as ugly old hags with no teeth, and not Heather Graham lookalikes ! Mary Kelly was supposedly the prettiest, but she makes Mankind of WWF fame look cute! For the Best Ripper movie check out my comments under From Hell - The First Picture talkback section.
