IP MAN 4 is coming with a fist!

Hey Everyone Freddy Beans here,

With some fantastic news!  The IP MAN series continues!  Donnie Yen recently posted this pic to Instagram making this guy smile wide.

For those that don’t know IP MAN is a great series that follows the life of, you guessed it Ip Man.  Ip Man is widely known as one of the master teachers of Wing Chun.  Though he’s probably most famous for being Bruce Lee’s teacher in the martial art.

I grew up idolizing Bruce Lee and Mike Tyson.  Don’t ask, it doesn’t make much sense to me either.  They both represent such opposite sides of the fighting spectrum.  One honed brute strength, backed by boiled anger.  The other calm indifference as a weapon, a smoothness where technique rules the day.  Ip Man is all about the later and the original and its sequels have been pretty great movies if ya ask me.

IP MAN (2008) the first in the series follows a family man who is ousted by the Japanese invasion, from his norms and forced to teach his hidden martial art in order to survive.

This movie kicked so much ass.  It’s loaded with action and Donnie Yen (Ip Man) known for handling action scenes also carries his own with the emotional acting needed here, to my surprise.

IP MAN 2 (2010) Piggy backs off the 1st film as Ip Man establishes his Wing Chun in Hong Kong.  This one again is loaded with awesome fight sequences.  Though I’m more a fan of the realistic fighting in the 1st one and less so of the CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON aerials they work here.  I just prefer my fights grounded in reality, unless they are superheroes, which I suppose you could argue Ip is.  While I don’t think this one was as good as the original it wasn’t a let-down at all, and was a fine film in its own right.

IP MAN 3 (2015) Finds Ip Man forced to protect a school from a bunch of local thugs.  It’s much better than that weak description gives it too.  Though this one felt the least tethered to the actual living breathing Ip Man’s life.  It's still a fine film in the series.

And now we have Wilson Yip (Director of all three predecessors) promising the best film yet in the series with the 4th venture out.

Regardless these are really good films and about so much more than fighting.  I absolutely recommend them if you haven’t given them a shot yet.

Anyone else excited about the Ip Man adventures continuing?

Til next time kids
