Paul Thomas Anderson's X-4 PROJECT!!! I have you now!
Alright folks, Harry here... Once again I find myself in the position of trying to clarify things for folks based on erroneous misperceptions cascaded upon mankind by folks that have little information to go on.... and admittedly... I have a little more, not much... just a tad.
Right now, Paul Thomas Anderson's Untitled Adam Sandler Flick is codenamed X-4 PROJECT. Doing my super Sherlock investigation skills, I discovered that there was once a video game called MEGAMAN X-4 which had a funny British accented Colonel and Reploid-chick named Iris! However, my ample gut tells me that Adam Sandler would not play a Reploid chick and that Emily Watson won't be playing a British Colonel. So I continued to search for greater meaning to the title. Rockets are often titled with the letter X, like in ROCKETSHIP XM.... and then there are those planets called X in THE MAN FROM PLANET X, and then there is that planet that Duck Dodgers and Marvin the Martian fought over. And since this film company (NEW LINE) is owned by parent company AOL/TIME/WARNER, my deductive skills have postulated that Luis Guzman could be playing Space Cadet Porky, Adam Sandler is obviously Duck Dodgers, Philip Seymour Hoffman will play Marvin The Martian, and John C Reilly will play the man that sends Dodgers on his most dangerous mission. Emily Watson? Well, they've added a romantic interest to stretch the plot past an 8 minute cartoon, she'll be playing the sexiest space-babe of all... a cross-dressing Bugs Bunny.
Now once my super brain had figured this all out, I began thinking about the genius of Paul Thomas Anderson to try and make a live-action feature film of DOCK DODGERS IN THE 24 1/2 CENTURY! Noone is expecting it. Not even New Line or the Actors. It's genius!
Ya know.... X-4 PROJECT could also be broken down to mean.... X- as in Unknown.... and 4 as in the 4th film by Paul Thomas Anderson.... and Project could mean like it's a thing that is being worked on that he hopes to turn in one day for a grade or money or something.
Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, obviously it's DUCK DODGERS in live action!
All kidding aside. The film is currently going under the name X-4 PROJECT, and I received this report below:
Harry,
Call me Mr. Kaida.
PT Anderson is good friends with John Brian, the producer of Fiona
Apple's latest CD and the man responsible for some of the Magnolia
soundtrack I believe. Anyways, John Brian's girlfriend, Mary Lynn
Ricecub has been cast as Adam Sandler's sister. She is a gifted comedian
that has also been cast in Steve Martin's new sketch comedy show, "The
Downer Channel." I've been told that this is not an Adam Sandler project
as much as it is Adam Sandler doing a PT Anderson film. It will be a
romantic comedy. I will find out more soon. Till then, keep your
fingers crossed that this is not the end of a marvelous streak of great
PT Anderson flicks.
Han, two, three!!!!!Harry here... When last I heard from PTA, he told me that the film was NOT an ADAM SANDLER COMEDY, but more like the films he has made before, that the movie was very much a Paul Thomas Anderson film. Now as to WHY he is using Adam Sandler? Well, both PTA and Quentin Tarantino see something with great potential with Adam Sandler. Maybe, just maybe they are right too. By no means am I a big Adam Sandler fan. And yes, I am terrified of Sandler talking like a fisherman with a lure in his bottom lip, but I have faith in PTA that he has something smart and wonderful in mind for all us filmgoers. But I am also keenly aware that filmmakers that are great can stumble here and there.... But somehow, I think PTA knows where the cracks in this sidewalk are and is watching his step.

Too bad it's not a live action Duck Dodger's film. That would rock. However if it was it would be at DreamWorks and executive produced my Steven Speilberg. Anyway whatever this movie is, I'm glad to see Sandler doing something with potentially more meat on it. He's a good actor and a gifted comic. Too often he's giving substandard scripts and is forced to hold up the picture himself. With PTA at the helm that shouldn't be the case this time.
-
wasn't Adam Sandler ok in The Wedding Singer? Why shouldn't a great filmmaker like PT Anderson find something good in him? And didn't rubber face funny man Jim Carrey do The Truman Show which was by another great filmmaker?
-
P T Anderson is a great fucking director,an actors Director.A man that can work with his actors to ceate an intense emotional film.Adam "wooden and not remotely funny"Sandler is a sad excuse for a comedian let alone ACTOR.What has P T done?WHAT HAS HE DONE?!!!!!
-
oh well...2 out of 3 aint bad.

here = MAGNOLIA, there = X-4

This news would be more credible if "Mr. Kaida" knew how to spell Jon Brion or Mary Lynn Rajskub's names correctly.
-
I mean... uhhh... X-4, eh? Oh, man, this is going to kick ass. He should realease a trailer right now. No, even better, he should send my the script. hee... hee... yes! Oh, man, I'm sorry.
-
DOCK DODGERS IN THE 24 1/2 CENTURY I cant believe they are going to make that! Wow and with adam sandler as duck dogers..pure genius! THIS JUST MADE MY DAY!
-
Yes that was total sarcasm
-
If only they actually made a movie based on Megaman X4. Or even the other Megaman X games.
Iris is actually Colonel's brother. And all the characters in the Megaman and X games are all reploids.
BTW, Megaman X5 comes out next week. -
It's John BRION (not Brian).
And Mary Lynn RAJSKUB (geez...Ricecub????).
Dear Mary Lynn was a regular on Larry Sanders once upon a time, and was also in Magnolia (if you have the DVD, she's the unfortunate gal in the TJ Mackey infomercial dramatizations).

That's right, X-14, that super cleanser that can even get the skidmarks out of your toilet bowl! Sandler will play an industrial spy out to steal the secret of this great cleanser. He ends up falling in love with a security guard at the X-14 plant (Janeane Garafalo) and it compromises his mission. Especially when it turns out that his employers (Dabney Coleman and Julianne Moore)want to turn X-14 into a new bio-weapon, instead of using it to clean the heads on Mt. Rushmore instead. Now, if that isn't a PTA film, I don't know what is.

Gary Coleman...or Eminem. Then you can cast all the Nintendo characters...lessee we have Christina Aguilera as Metroid (he was agirl y'know)... Nathan Lane as the voice of Motherbrain...Leo DiCrapio as Link and Vin Deisel as Gannon. Mario and Luigi would be Andrew Dice Clay and John Leguizamo (repising his academy award winning role) actually I find much humor in both of them as well as a Jew and a latino playing a couple of italian brothers... Queen Latifa would be King Koopa. Princess Toadstool should be Britney Spears. Robert Deniro would be Yoshi and Kirby would be Ed Norton. Fincher would direct this "Nintenblow" moobie. What the hell has this to do with PTA or Adam Sandler??? about as much as Harry's post...

2 of the best at what they do coming together to create something different...Film fans should be excited...

when he accepted for "Big Daddy" and read the letter from the kids was one of the most pathetic, patently unfunny moments ever to be packaged as comedy, committing both cardinal sins of humor at once, 1) being crashingly unfunny, and 2) not knowing when to quit. I was embarrassed for him. I have become convinced that the crash-n-burn of "Little Nicky" was divine revenge for that moment. PTA is too damn arrogant for my taste, but "Boogie Nights" definitely had moments of greatness. I wouldn't knock anything that's truly good, no matter who it's by, even Britney Spears--well, wait, I won't have to ever worry about that.
-
Jon Brion composed the score for Magnolia. And Sundown, I would add Marlon Brando as Bowser and Haley Joel Osment as Kid Icarus. And since it would be a Fincher movie, Brad Pitt could play Simon Belmont.
-
How could this movie not be great? PTA has made three spectacular movies, particularly the last two. And Adam Sandler is a comedy veteran, he's been in the biz for like 20 years, and he's made millions by entertaining millions. I want to say something witty but I've never found myself so pissed off by the talkbacks, for no good reason. Now if Adam Sandler was a HOBBIT with a fish-hook in his mouth, everybody would be jacking off to this article of Harry's. Usually I'm sticking up for the AICN guys, like leave 'em alone and don't be so jealous just because they got a Virgin Suicides pen and pencil set, or a Wild Wild West frisbee, or a size Medium Coyote Ugly tee-shirt (good luck getting into it). But now I'm a little exhausted by this Duck Dodgers article, and I'm kinda mad, like I wish PTA would just get on the mojo wire, and tell Harry and us SOMETHING about this movie please! Jeezus CHRIST I must be starved for entertainment.
-
....Rajskub is the correct spelling. She is also best buddies with magnolia soundtrack song-stress Aimme Mann. She has also performed around LA and northern cA as a member of the Girls Guitar Club comic duo. She was latest seen in a bit part on the horrendous Dude where's my car
-
PTA doesn't direct a Sandler movie, he directs his movie with Sandler in it. Until he next two movies tank, and then, ONLY THEN, might he be that first guy. I love PTA's track record so far. Can't wait to see what he does next!
-
My passing dislike of him will never compare to my everlasting distain for Jim Carrey and Robin Williams, but I have come to believe that Sandler is a cool guy. Sandler has done some nice stuff -- Wedding Singer and Happy Gilmore. No, he's not "brilliant" like Steve Martin or rubberized by Carrey, but he has found his own little niche in the market with his off-the-wall humor. And he gets rich doing it. And you know what? He doesn't seem like a messed-up freak like lots of these other comedians.
-
Wow, does this mean that Sandler is going to have to die from cancer?
-
...TO POOP ON!

I read a great quote about PTA once that was dead on...I'm pretty sure it was in the Reporter. It went something like this, "PTA likes to brag that he's never read any books on screenwriting. He's also never made a movie less than 3 hours." OK, let the comments about me, my intelligence, etc. begin.
-
PTA is a highly talented, underrated filmmaker. While his head may be a little big, he certainly has the skills to back up the talk. The guy's no empty boaster. He's just begun a career that's sure to be great, so all of you nay-sayers will be eating your words in thirty years when he's cinematically canonized. When I first heard that he was making a movie with Sandler, I was horrified, but now I have faith that he will take the hint of talent Sandler showed in "Wedding Singer" and turn it into something wonderful. People like Quiz Kid Donnie and I know that PTA is the best and brightest of a new generation of talented filmmakers(yes, he IS more talented than Payne, Jonze, Fincher, Mendes, Wes Anderson), and we also know that true genius is rarely recognized in its own time. In thirty years when Magnolia and Boogie Nights are seen as the "Taxi Driver" and "Mean Streets" of his career, you'll see. Flame away if you must, but mark my words-Anderson is-and will soon be known as-one of the great directors of our time. Oh, and he's only made ONE movie that was three hours. Boogie Nights was 2:45 and Hard Eight was 1:40, a relatively short feature, so that "perfect quote" is inaccurate. X4 will be one of the best films of 2001 and PTA can kick Soderbergh's overrated ass(and I like
Soderbergh, but he's not a GREAT talent like PTA)up and down the block all week long. Cinematically speaking that is. Anderson=Scorsese/Coppola
Soderbergh=Cimino/Friedkin/Bogdono
vich territory-a wunderkid who's hot for a minute or two, but never makes anything of real importrance, despite his(overrated, but still fine)talent. In the grand scheme of things that is.
-
Screenwriting books are for hacks. These books reduce what should be a passionate, emotional artform into a series of flow charts and act diagrams. In short, talented scribes(like Anderson and Kaufman)do NOT need them. The only way to learn to write a screenplay is the same way you learn to do anything else-by EXPERIENCE. You could read a million books on how to ride a bike, but until you get on one, your average 10-year-old will be more of an expert than you. In short, they're unneccessary. X4 will only be another excellent film in Paul Thomas Anderson's remarkable ouevre.
-
I always love the inane dicussions about Paul Thomas Anderson. Personally, to reveal my bias up front, I feel PTA is one of the most talented American filmmakers of 'his generation' (whatever that means).
Sure you can flame him all you want for ripping off Scorsese in Boogie Nights and ripping off Altman in Magnolia - but these are good (if not great) films.
Boogie Nights has a lot of characters, and like the recent Traffic (not-so coincidentally featuring two of the same actors), it suffers in what one could call developing empathy for the characters - but if you thought that watching a movie about a 'porn star family' was going to be directly relatable to your own life - get a better one.
Magnolia is just a brillant film. Period. It's long. I have a hard time taking this as a legitimate criticism of the film, since the majority of people who have seen it would presumably know this ahead of time. Is it pretentious?
Probably (okay, it definitely is in parts). But what would you rather see - a film that has been watered down to appease what audiences are supposed to want, or a film that has its flaws (just like real life does), but tries its hardest to get you to FEEL SOMETHING.
The man is talented AND he takes risks. These two things, of course, lead to some people not liking his films (which is a completely different thing from saying that his films are not 'good'). So what if he wants to make a film with Adam Sandler? He's the fucking auteur; he can do what he wants! I applaude the man who wanting to try something completely different - even if it turns out to be less than good.
Ok, well, that was a little more than I intended, but everytime I seee one of these threads, I feel compelled to attempt to state my opinion....
Now -> who's playing the part that was allegedly Sean Penn's for the choosing? And is Phillip Baker Hall going to be playing Mumbles O'Malley in this one or not? -
I agree that PTA has the potential to become a great, but don't dismiss the three-act story structure...come on. It worked for Shakespeare, but suddenly it's shit because someone wrote it down and put it in a book? Doesn't mean you can't deviate from it, but it's a great way to tell a story. Soderbergh is also a great new director, and I don't see the need to compare the two. Both have done some wonderful movies. I still think Magnolia was best picture for that year. I would like someone to explain to me why it was "self-important". If it's because he had raining frogs? If so, I think you're silly. It was still a cool and funny moment, albiet absurd. Some people take the entire film to be a biblical reference. I think that it was merely the ultimate storm that takes place before the calm -- the culminating moment when everything is as bad as it can get, and it was merely punctuation. To me, Magnolia is a series of wonderful vignettes that are loosely tied together. Seriously, I would like someone to explain the "self important" thing to me...I guess if you hate PTA, you must hate Kubrick, whose films are filled with self importance.

I don't understand people who think Magnolia is pretentious
by jolielouise
Magnolia is a prime example of a guy making a film from his gut. That's about as far away from pretense and artifice as you can get. PTA has the balls to trust his instinct. You may think his instinct is wrong , but please, let's think about what 'pretentious' means before we start throwing it around where it doesn't belong.
-
I don't want to get into this argument over whether PTA is an irritating hack or a genius for our time (to my way of thinking, Hard Eight was much better than Boogie Nights, but I've not seen Magnolia so I can't speak to quality of the man's entire oeuvre; I can say I find him annoying, though I don't think he's a crappy filmmaker), but I do want to note a couple of things: 1. Shakespeare's structure was generally 5-act, not 3-act. (Though this doesn't mean that the three-act structure embraced by Hollywood is a bad thing. Just like anything, it's a template. It's what you do with it that matters.) 2. Soderbergh is not a "new" director. He made a little film in 1985 (?) called sex, lies & videotape. You know, the one that kickstarted the indie boom of the 80s/90s? He has recently returned to the scene with a vengeance, but he is far from new. He's a talented fellow who has been around for years and has had much more time to prove himself than Mr. Anderson has. Not to say one is better than the other. I'd say they're apples and oranges (as are Kubrick and PTA--I hope that the poster who referenced Kubrick's "self-importance" was not comparing the work, only the attitude).
-
So you got me on the 3 act/5 act thing but you get my point. As to my comment about Kubrick being "self-important" I was being sarcastic.
-
PTA is, without a doubt, one of the most talented filmmakers working today...
Adam Sandler is, without a doubt, one of the funniest men alive...
I expect a very ORIGINAL movie.
