Has P.T. Anderson begun shooting the Untitled ADAM SANDLER/PTA Film'

Published at:  Jan 21, 2001 3:10:18 AM CST

Weeeeellllll, seems MR ANDERSON has gone and started production on his latest film without so much as letting a butterfly flap her wings to tell us.... Alright folks, I'm putting a challenge out there to get to the bottom of whatever is going on with PTA's latest flick.... Where is it shooting? What's going on? And what's gonna fall from the sky next? The key to life being happy though is that THE GUZMAN IS BACK!!!! THE GUZMAN!!!! YES THE GUZMAN RULESSSSS!!!! GUZMAN GUZMAN GUZMAN!!!!! Oh yeah!

Hey harry Stefen here, thought this might of be some interest to the readers
of your site.......regarding new Paul Thomas Anderson flick.

January 19 - 21, 2001

I spoke to PTA's camp yesterday & got the update on the Adam Sandler Project!
PTA is still undecided on a title, so I'll continue to refer to it as the
Adam Sandler Project.  Filming has already begun & will include locations
outside the Valley. In casting news, Sean Penn is out, but expect to see Adam
Sandler, Emily Watson, John C. Reilly, Philip Seymour Hoffman & Luis Guzman.

You can also expect additional surprise appearances in the film. Lastly,
expect a lot of the same crew. Robert Elswit is the Director of Photography,
Dylan Tichenor will be editing & JoAnne Sellar producing. Of course, I'll
continue to provide the latest news as soon as I receive it.

I got this straight from  PTAnderson.Com - Latest News

    I have total faith

    by revsam

I have total faith in this project, as my subject would imply. I think one of the trademarks of a good director is taking actors you wouldn't normally think of working together, or on a certain kind of movie, and then smush it all together. Can PTA pull this off? You bet he can. Just wish he'd let the fans know more then the whole 89-minute comedy thing. Darn you secrecy! Darn you to heck!

PTA's A Hack For Dropping Out Of Film School, While.....

    by mrbeaks

.... Mali is somehow staggeringly competent for having finished film school, but still unable to so much as pitch Troma? Just a guess. On another subject, why this isn't being referred to as the "Untitled Luis Guzman Project" is a mystery to me.

    This will be great.....

    by jolielouise

But keep in mind that I'm one of those people who thinks PTA is a genius who can do no wrong. I APPLAUD him for dropping out of film school!!! TRUE GENIUSES DON'T NEED SCHOOL! (Which is why I'm still in grad school, I guess). Anyway, I don't think of this as an "Adam Sandler" movie like Little Nicky (what was UP with that movie?), it's a PTA movie with Adam Sandler in it. But I agree with whoever said it should be referred to as the "Untitled Luis Guzman Project." I hope Luis Guzman's character is just named Luis Guzman like he was in Magnolia. Have faith, people, this will be great.

    Marky Mark

    by steef

DId anybody think Marky Mark could pull off a drama? Much like Peter Weir having Robin Williams and Harrison Ford star in serious movies. PTA knows what he's doing.

No, the pairing of PTA and Sandler doesn't sound like good business. I bet they both know that and I bet this is the driving force that is going to keep them bright and on their toes. Odd casting has provided some of the more interesting moments in film history -- Jackie Gleason in The Hustler being my favorite. Leslie Neilson as a spoof meister being another. But Emily Watson seems a perhaps too odd choice. She will be the interesting one to watch since I can't remember her being in a mainstream film before...much less one with Adam Sandler. It'll be interesting to see how she fits herself in. As for Luis Guzman, he doesn't rule. Maybe he'll rule after this movie or the one after that, but I like people to do something other than be around before I say they rule. He didn't rule in Traffic...he was the comic relief who bit the bullet like all comic relief. But he might have ruled in The Limey. What are the rules to Ruling? I admit I don't know so I could be just way off base here.

I know nothing about the script. I know very little about the cast. However, I do know this, my ass will be the first in line. And if this unique match-up of P.T.A. and Sandler lives up to even half it's potential, I'll also be the first one in line for the next showing. FUCK THE NAYSAYERS 'CAUSE THEY DON'T MEAN A THING!

the problem with these posts and everyone's rosy outlook on all

    by lostoptimist

    1) Yes, anyone who actually saw Wahlberg in a little movie called FEAR (with Reese Weatherspoon and directed by James Foley), should've known better than to doubt Wahlberg's acting ability prior to BOOGIE NIGHTS; 2) Sandler has given no indication that he can play a role without some 'comedy crutch' (annoying vocal tics, increasing the volume of his voice for the requisite punchlines, farting/spitting/beating people up in unique ways etc.); 3) Paul Anderson (doesn't matter which director since it applies to both) SHOULD be doubted when it comes to a comedy project because his pics have yet to suggest that he even possesses a sense of humor. His movies contain nary an intentional laugh although MAGNOLIA deserves an award or two for the self-serious oh so wrenching montage of his entire cast singing the words to an Aimmee Mann song (my heart goes out to Moore for mouthing the words while she was supposed to be unconscious in the car); 4) It bothers me to hear PTA chalk up MAGNOLIA's failing at the box office to the film's length. I mean, I don't know about you guys but that sure sounds like the rallying cry of either a whiner, a spolied brat or an individual destined to be a sell-out. Hope I'm wrong as far as that goes but what I've been hearing does not bode well as far as I'm concerrned.

    by ricky fitts

Yes, Luis Guzman rules. He ruled in Boogie Nights, he ruled in Traffic, he ruled in the few minutes he was in Magnolia. He ruled to a slightly lesser degree in the Limey, which was also very good. He rules because he knows what roles to pick. He's got PTA designing roles for him. And of course PTA can be funny; he's written a few Saturday Night Live skits.

    by ceejaydaysay

Just expressing my complete support and enthusiasm for this project. PTA knows what he's doing, he checked out the comedy writing at SNL to prepare; and Sandler is much more talented than many of you people give him credit for. You'll be surprised.

lostoptimist what the hell is wrong with you?

    by gary2012

Of course Magnolia was destined to fail at the box office, it was just that good. The first thing I said to my friend after seeing it was that it was too much for most people, and it wouldn't do to well money wise. I won't even begin to get into how clueless you are to the whole Aimee Mann song montage part. Lets just say that some people get the over all meaning of the film and you obviously don't. As fr the person who mentioned Fear, you are right. It was a little movie. A very little movie. Reese Witherspoon has become a fine actress since then, as has Mark Wahlberg become a fine actor, but that movie was a most awful piece of trash. Nikki 4 eva. HAHAHA! How menacing. Well at least the scene on the roller coaster was touching. Anyway I love PTAs films, and am interested in anything he does, but Adam Sandler doesn't give me a lot of extra hope. What can he possibly do except be either Adam Sandler or one of the two charaters he plays (the tough guy, or the idiot wierdo)? I guess we'll see. I guess if anyone could bring something else out of him it might be PTA.

    There's definitely more to him

    by ceejaydaysay

Hi PeoplesPoet, I just want to disagree with you and try to argue that Adam Sandler definitely has more than "two characters." He has moments of real depth and emotion in all of his movies; like in Wedding Singer when Robbie is looking up at Julia's window, and in Big Daddy when Sonny is upset about having to give up Julian and when Sonny is upset with Layla because she won't help him with the custody case. None of these moments fit in to the "idiot" and "tough guy" you are mentioning. The are all well-measured, not over the top, accurate portrayals of emotion on screen. I think that I, and a lot of other Sandler fans, really felt these moments. It's just to facile to assume that Adam Sandler is one or two dimensional. But, I agree with you that having him working in a PTA movie is going to be great, I totally admire PTA. I just think that there is a lot of talent in Adam anyway, whether or not it is PTA in particular who is bringing it out. Looking forward to it.

PeoplesPoet, I do "get" what PTA was doing in MAGNOLIA

    by lostoptimist

(With the Mann montage) but it doesn't mean that I have to like it and give it my critic's stamp of approval, does it? Personally, I thought his 'statement' with the song was a bit overblown and akin to tapping someone on the head with a pickaxe for all it's subtlety. As for FEAR, yeah, it wasn't a great movie but it did show Wahlberg going from nice guy to evil bastard in the span of a second, thus leading me to believe he could act well before BOOGIE NIGHTS.

    my thoughts

    by respecthuey

Ok, first of all everyone needs to stop judging this film. No script information has been released, so you have no right to say whether it will sink or swim. Give Sandler a chance, for crying out loud. Ok, maybe his performance in Little Nicky wasn't that great, but the guy can act. He can. Review some old SNL stuff, or watch The Wedding Singer. The guy can act. This is going to be his major step into drama. If the script is good, then the film, no doubt will also be good. Just please, give Sandler & PTA a chance to work their magic, and come late 2001/early 2002, you may be shocked at how well Sandler can act...

PTA is one of my many gods...

    by shaithis77

I think Adam is a fuck (though I gotta admit that I liked The Wedding Singer), but I'll give him a chance, as long as PT makes him put a cork in all those terrible goofy voices. Oh yeah, who's the dueche bag that said PT's a drop out amature along with Smith, Raimi, ect.? What crusty old film school teach (who's ass you most likely nuzzle) put that silly idea in your pea-brained head?

Magnolia- Way ahead of it's time

  • Even Sandler cannot screw up a PTA film. Does anyone think PTA is gonna let him talk like a creole with a mouth full of shit??
Sandler will only need to act as well as he did in the best parts of wedding singer, like a normal guy, and PTA's words and camera will do the rest. Don't worry!

While I do agree that not getting Magnolia and not liking it are not necessarily related, you, Cine99, then go on to illustrate just how much you didn't get the movie. Just lonely and depressed? Did you happen to miss the last half hour?

    Reply to Talkback

  • so making fu of it, like it was weird, or like it was just thrown in on a whim tells me that you didn't really nderstand the film. Not that you couldn't follow the film, but that you didn't pick up on the many layers of meaning in the film. This movie was a lot like "La Dolche Vita" in that if you don't quite pick up the other things not being smacked in your face every five seconds it seems like a bunch of the same depressing crap over and over. Well those other elements, and the way the different stories were weaved to complement each other is what stops that from happening in my book. Everyone has an opinion though.

P.T. Anderson Project - Filming in Woodland Hills

    by george423

Currently a P.T. Anderson film is being filmed, starring Adam Sandler, at 5633 Topanga Canyon Blvd., Woodland Hills, CA 91367.

I believe it is being called the X-4 Project, although I don't know if that is the actual name of the film. Either way, film crews will be present February 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 2001.
