Precious Roy here with what I desperately hope will be great news: there’s a reboot in the works for 9 TO 5, and the original stars are reportedly circling it!
The original 1980 film starred Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dolly Parton, who also wrote and performed the theme song. In addition to being a feature film and a hit pop song, 9 TO 5 has also been a sitcom that ran from 1982 - 1988, and, more recently, was turned into a Broadway musical.
According to the Deadline Hollywood article, Rashida Jones (TOY STORY 4, PARKS AND REC) is being eyed to co-write with original writer Pat Resnick, what is being called a reboot. Rashida Jones is an inspired choice; I hope she’ll do it.
The more I think about the original film, the more I’m sure it will be difficult to match it, even with the very-talented Jones co-scripting. If you’re too young and perhaps have never seen the original, or haven’t seen it in recent years with time and tide to measure it by again, I highly recommend a watch of it. It’s one of my favorite films. And given the state of our nation right now — Trump as president, the #MeToo movement, and the mini-reunion the principal cast had at the Emmy awards this year — the timing is probably perfect for this.
My one hope is that this film will not be a reboot, but a sequel, with a Next Generation cast. I actually want to see what became of Doralee, Violet and Judy once their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical boss, Franklin Hart, Jr. (the irreplaceable Dabney Coleman) left for South America and they were free to do the corporation their own way. I'm hoping we'll get to see three new ladies, separated at first by office politics, unite and then seek out the help of the original trio when they hear the legend of how they took down Hart… a heroine quest for a little dignity, and a little respect, with maybe some wacky stuff involving a kidnapping, too.
