WHEN WE FIRST MET looks like yet another fun encounter with GROUNDHOG DAY!

Hi folks, Precious Roy here with a trailer for the romantic comedy WHEN WE FIRST MET. It was written by John Whittington (one of the writers on the LEGO BATMAN MOVIE) and directed by Ari Sandel (THE DUFF).

It stars Adam Devine (MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES) as Noah, a guy who discovers the girl he's been secretly pining over the last three years, Avery (Alexandria Daddario) has met the man of her dreams and is getting married. Noah obsesses over the night he met Avery, trying to understand the missteps that cost him a relationship and landed him in the friendzone.

Through some magic in an old photo booth (likely from rubbing up against a Zoltar Speaks machine), Noah is sent back in time and gets a second chance to win Avery's love. But our hero soon learns how unprepared he is to woo her and keeps making missteps, as he keeps leaping back into his own life to try and course-correct, getting further and further from his goal.

The obviousness of the GROUNDHOG DAY premise aside, I have high hopes for this film. I suspect Adam Devine was chosen for this film specifically because it's about toxicity and entitlement. If the writing is as strong as I hope it is, what we have is a charming little love story about a guy who doesn't really know the difference between love and infatuation, who's on a journey to realize that he didn't actually make a mistake the night he met Avery-- and that things turned out exactly the way they should. I'm hoping some smart typecasting is setting Noah up for a deeper understanding of what love is; finally realizing that person that you're actually meant to be with, and not the person you want to cheat destiny and steal for yourself. A GROUNDHOG DAY where, instead of working on himself endlessly to measure up to the girl he's fixated on, the hero figures out he was actually in the right place... just looking in the wrong direction.

WHEN WE FIRST MET premieres February 9th on Netflix, SUCKERS!
