K-19 sub arrives in Halifax, Nova Scotia today!

Published at:  Jan 15, 2001 10:47:54 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with a fuzzy unclear but cool all the same pic of the K-19 arriving for shooting in Halifax, Nova Scotia! Alright, it ain't much... but there is just something that strikes me as being super cool about looking out your window at work... and seeing a Russian Sub that will hold Han Solo and Qui-Gon with Soviet Accents to boot! Just think of this shot as being the Russian Sub equivalent to that Big Foot shot... hehehe... Fuzzy... but cool. Here ya go...

Harry:

It's your connection in Halifax, Nova Scotia here.

I looked out my office window a couple of hours ago
and what should be sailing by (ok, being towed by)
but the Russian sub that they will use to film
K-19 scenes here in Halifax.

Sorry this JPG is so terrible (probably not useable).
You can't even see the prominent red star on the hull,
but trust me, there is one.
The digital camera in our office has no zoom. That
dirty is salt stains deposited on the outside of
the office window by water from the harbour (yes,
our building extends out over the harbour).

    I'm First!!!!!!

    by jokerrulez

Well....I'm not really first I just wanted to see if some jackass would deride me for typing that as my subject. I am, however, fired up about a submarine movie featuring Neeson and Ford. After that historical travesty called U-571 I am thirsting for a really good film about subs. Ever since 'Silent Service' on my Amiga and well before that I've been nuts for the subject. Here's hoping it is a good one.

    sub sightings

    by bent wookie

On Dec. 27, two other subs were in dock near Halifax, across the harbour in Dartmouth. They looked old and crusty, like the crappy pic sent in.

As you can guess from my name, I am from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and I am curious as to how many people in talk back are also from Halifax. Unfortunalty I am currently living in Montreal, so I won't be able to be witness to any of the filming of this movie. Oh well, I got to work on the set of Titanic there, and that was pretty fun. In Montreal the only luck I had was getting a small job on the set of Battlefield Earth. yipee!

    Halifax

    by therock

I dunno..are we sure this is a Russian Sub? Remember, Halifax is the HQ for the Canadian Atlantic Fleet (such as it is). Our subs date back to Korea (although we are getting new ones from Britian next year), maybe it's just one of our clunkers that broke down and hadda be towed back to port. Wouldn't be the first time.

I'm also In Nova Scotia, not Halifax, but Dartmouth.

Haligonian, did you get that work from IATSE or what exactly?

TheRock, you make a good point, but I'm pretty dang sure that none of the subs we have or ever had looked like that. Russian subs are pretty distinctive looking, but that's just going from my foggy memory. And we do know that the film is being shot down here, so...it's not that much of a stretch of the imagination.

Golf 1 or Golf 2 class

    by luther73

definitely a Russian boat and an old one at that. Its either a Golf 1 or Golf 2 SSB class cant tell the picture is so poor. These boats are from the early 60's and are diesel electric not nuclear but they do have 3 SSN-3(SERB) nuclear missiles located in the rear of the sail, they are the direct decendant of the Foxtrot class attack boats derived from German technology captured at the end of WW2 so basically its 1940's technology. The Russians have a whole bunch of these subs rusting away in port and its my guess the production company bought it for a song and a dance. It looks like this production needs a military advisor because i believe the sub in question to the incident that is being dramatized in this film was a Delta 1 SSBN which is much bigger and carried 12 nuclear missiles and also looks nothing like these old piece of crap Golf class diesel boats. Still i dont understand why this movie is being made? I think its because of the Kursk tradgedy from the summer. It just shows what hacks these scriptwrighters are, they go back and look at past Soviet naval tradgedies and come up with this crap, What about K-129 and operation Jennifer and the whole
Glomar Explorer thing back in 1975, now thats a story worthy of a movie! PS if anyone needs Soviet or other military hardware info get ahold of me.I can help (4 years in Naval Intel, i know my shit)

    sorry, Its a Foxtrot class

    by luther73

Saw a better picture on that newspaper link, Its a Foxtrot or an offshoot class, definitely no missile launcher in the sail so its not a Golf.

    Well gee...now I'm hurt

    by critus

Man...I sent a story to Harry about this sub about two months ago. Had a whole series of stories about it here in St. Petersburg, FL. The sub was a failed tourist attraction that was taking up port space. The city founders were basically begging the owner to get the damn thing out of here. The movie company that came in and bought it basically saved the day for all parties concerned. So much for my feeble attempts to become an Ain't It Cool scooper. I just can't believe someone in Halifax is cooler than me.
