Further Updates on RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA and David Fincher
Hey folks, Harry here... Garth over at Dark Horizons ran a link to a website for RendezvousWithRama.Com which has some pre-production designs and news about the project. Well, I just got a report in from Roland about the project. Now, the curious thing about the Rendezvous With Rama site is it looks less like a promotional (to public) website and more like a pitch site. A site that is being used in conjunction with something else to possibly bring in investors for this epic project... and with the budget detail below... it is certainly understandable. This is to be one of the $100 million dollar club flicks, and if it follows the book and the quality of Fincher's past films... it'll be worth every dime! Can't wait!
Hello Guys !
My name is Roland and i am the webmaster of DavidFincher.CjB.Net !
I follow the news 24/7 to find something out about Fincher.... and there are some really cool news :
- Panic Room started shooting on Janurary 8th
- Fincher is going to direct RAMA !
i knew this since Nov. because we are in contact with Producer Lori McCreary who by the way is a really nice person.
Lori gave us a little interview back in December which we now have put online
Go to http://www.davidfincher.cjb.net to check it out....
She confirmed that
- David is going to produce it
- That the budget will be over 100.000.000 $
- Moebius is the illustrator of RAMA !
now http://www.rendezvouswithrama.com also went online and also confirmed this and they even give you a look at some conceptual drawings...but they also say that RAMA WILL BE A CGI MOVIE !!!
David Fincher will direct a CGI movie !!!!! GREAT !!!
and hey do you remember the other Moebius CGI PROJECT.... he talked about "finding out how well his drawings translate into 3D".... this is what i call prepareing
and if you ask me
it all makes sense in a tyler sort of was

Tyler Durden leads the expedition with a motley crew of scientific, but mentally unstable badasses and beats the shit out of a group of claimjumping aliens, mano-a-mano, while collecting data on the ship. I can hear Arthur C. spinning now.

They need to let Fincher go back and finish off Alien 3. There is a great movie hiding under the shambles that the studio created. It would be great if they would let him. They almost destroyed his career and in his current top form he should have the last laugh and re-release his debut film in his vision......
-
Well kids, what to say? sure sounds interesting. A CGI flick though? Won't that cost like a ton and take YEARS? will Fincher still make live action flicks in the meantime? Been reading about this for years. Said that Walker was writing the script, blah blah. So now we see it may happen? Well, okay then. And any word on Panic Room? Is it really gonna suck or will Fincher pull it out? Well okay then. That's it. watching this with interest...

Am I the only one who liked ALIEN 3? I mean, the movie itself wasn't terrible... it stood on it's own. I can understand the reason behind the initial disappointment, what with Ripley and practically everyone else dying by the end titles, but once you get over that and watch the film without really relating it to the previous two... it's still a great horror sci-fi movie! The acting was top notch, the alien was fucking scary as hell, and Sigourney Weaver delivered one of her best performances ever! Sure, ALIENS will always be the best of the series (and my all time favorite film) but I don't think it is fair to bury this movie under such harsh criticism. The one great thing about ALIEN 3 was that it still maintained the dark and gritty atmosphere of the previous films, not like ALIEN RESURRECTION which was so campy and off kilter that it didn't even 'feel' like an ALIEN movie(please don't get me started on that 'Newborn' abomination)! As for Fincher's original vision,... the scenes that were cut from ALIEN 3 explained more of the religious beliefs adopted by the inmates. It had the characters a little more fleshed out than what you saw on screen... plus there was that whole segment where the prisoners actually managed to capture the alien.
-
My understanding of this film (although the web site isn't very clear on this) is that it will feature real actors interacting with a CGI set. Anyone who's read the novel will realise that this is the only way to bring this novel to the screen. Not sure about Morgan Freeman as Norton though - I always imagined someone younger in the role, as it's a fairly physical one. George Cloony would suit it better.
-
This project has been bouncing around for a while, so I guess this news is a step in the right direction. I think when they say a completely CGI movie... they mean digital backgrounds and such. It would only be logical, right? Anyway, did you guys happen to check out the link to that awesome Star Wars scoop from Dark Horizons this morning? It all appears to be genuine. The mysterious 'insider' has a classic panic attack towards the end of the conversation. If you're reading this and don't know what I'm talking about, Dark Horizons posted a link to an online radio program 'archive' this morning. The date of the show is December 19, 2000 -- about thirty minutes into the program, a 'guest' (via telephone) calls in and claims to be a former production crew member on Episode II. What he has to say may surprise you.

As a follow up to Aliens the movie is weak, I admit it. But this movie is completely different from Aliens. It stands like a great movie on itself. To me, this is Sigourney weavers best performance to date, better than her oscar nominated performance in Aliens. Also, the ending really rocked, the perfect end to the series. The movie is very stylish, with a sense of dread not seen in any other Alien film. I also liked a lot of the other performances. The score is pure genious, I love it. As a whole the movie is weak when looked upon as a part in the Alien Saga but really stands on its own as a action/thriller/drama with a Alien in it.
-
Well said. I totally agree 100 percent. When you single out the movie, it is a stand alone thriller with an amazing cast and terrifying title monster. But in comparison to the first two films, it is the weak link (actually... Alien Resurrection is the weak link, but I refuse to accept that movie as part of the Alien Saga). The problem was the development hell that the project underwent for six years before completion, with script changes and numerous writers putting their own polish on the finished product. Also, people could not accept having a single alien in a film that relied more on suspense and horror than the action spectacle that was James Cameron's ALIENS! Of course it's going to go downhill. You can't go one step forward... two steps back, you just can't. But still, Fincher proved he could direct. Now we can love him for the aftermath of ALIEN 3.
-
No people, youre not alone in liking Alien 3....but, as it has been stated, when you have the harsh task of following up a work of kick ass genius like Aliens, it's sure to looks lackluster....but i looked at it like "new world, new situaation, one alien...i dont mind..." As for Ressurrection....i don't blame anybody but the studios...try looking around online for Joss Whedon's original script....great stuff, until the studios made him cut so much...
-
Alien3 isn't that bad...sure it has a lot of flaws but it's fascinating to see the good movie that was in there peek out in certain scenes, and Fincher's talent was obvious, even muted and restrained by the overworked script. Sigourney Weaver was great in it. As a whole, it's a disappointment, but a well-made one and not nearly as bad as most would have us believe. At least as good as "Dark City," IMHO.
"Alien Resurrection," on the other hand...now THAT'S crap. More like "Rocky Horror" than an Alien movie, and probably the last nail in the franchise coffin, unfortunately. Or maybe they should just let it stay dead.
-
Hi it
-
Too bad the sequils were some of the worst crap I have ever read
-
Why has no one mentioned Fincher's bizarre association with digitalferox.com?
-
I love fincher
-
...but I doubt that it will be. I just don't see how Hollywood will fork over $100 million plus for this project, when, by the website's own figures, most of Fincher's and Clarke's flicks only generate about that much at the BO. Don't get me wrong - I think Fincher is brilliant, and I would love to see this happen! However, even if it gets green-lighted, it'll probably get pared down to $65 or 70 million (like X-Men), and/or someone will drop out, etc... Sorry to be a cynic, but I'm tired of getting all hyped-up and then let down.

OK, don't kill me for this, guys. It's an honest question...
by llghtst0rmer
I personally liked Alien Resurrection. I liked the whole series; Aliens is in my all-time top five (hell, it's a Cameron film, and look at my screen name fer chrissakes....) And, yes, I do like Alien3 on its own merits, but I DO like the fourth film on the same terms. I concede it's not nearly as dark and intense as the original, not as poetic as the third and nowhere near as solid as the second, but I still say it was entertaining and inventive. I would like to read Whedon's original script, but even for as much as people say was cut out, I still think what remained in the film was a result of extremely clever writing. Yes, even the "newborn." So, maybe this opinion is radically different from the majority of the AICN community, but opinions shouldn't be based merely on the popular consensus, if you ask me. So tell me, everyone... why all the disdain? What are your specific, honest-to-God gripes with the film? Like I said, it's obvious it has a different tone and feel from the other films, but when you think about it, EACH film in the series is unique in style. Each one seems like a cinematic embodiment of each director's brand of filmmaking, don't you think? Anyway, I'm just curious what it is I'm missing that keeps me from hating Resurrection like a good movie geek should, apparently. (And if all you say is along the lines of, "It sucked. You're stupid," well, that ain't an answer to my question, folks. Give me an honest response, please.) Lightstormer out.

Here are some of my problems with "Alien: Resurrection:"
1) The CGI Aliens were patently fake. OK if it doesn't bother you, but part of the genius of the first 3 films was that you never really got a clear look at the creature, its specifics stayed almost in your subconscious and were more scary that way. The full-on look at them swimming through the water irreparably cheapened them as dramatic forces, much like the look at the shark at the end of "Jaws" almost undermines an otherwise flawless film. 2) The excessive plot machinations to bring Ripley back into the storyline. A clone? With MEMORIES? Huh? Again, not a problem if it doesn't bother you, I just didn't buy it. I know it's science fiction, but I'm not going to let them just do anything they want. On that same note, it's called "Alien" because it's about the ALIEN. Why does Ripley have to be in every single one? Haven't we done all we can with the character? That was probably the studio's fault, insisting on Sigourney Weaver's participation before they would greenlight the movie, but puh-leeze. Cloning is one of the great dramatic cop-outs, almost up there with "whew, it was only a dream!" 3) The storyline itself was wobbly and had little dramatic thrust to me--rather than the sleek dramatic engine of the first two movies, it seemed like a rattling old jalopy. 4) The audacity to cast Brad Dourif as yet another crazy. Michael Wincott was cool, but he lasted about 20 minutes! I'm willing to give Jeunet some points for a few decent visuals, but all in all this is a ham-handed, clumsy, derivative, ineffective movie. To me, that is. Maybe part of my problem is that with "Alien" and "Aliens" we're talking about two of my favorite movie experiences of all time--two movies that I still clearly remember seeing for the first time, 21 and 15 years later. To someone who didn't love the first two as I did, the disappointments of the 4th (and to a lesser extent, the 3rd) may not be as significant.
-
Is it just me, or did that Rama-site look seriously corny? Judging only from the site, another Battlefield Earth is on the way.
-
Actually, I think Ripley needs to stay in the series. Especially after part 4. Beginning with Part 2, the series has taken on a Motherly theme (her relationship with Newt, the cut from her face to the outline of Mother Earth). In part 3, it was upped by having Ripley be the carrier of the last of the alien species. In part 4, of course, she actually became teh mother. The Alien Saga has incorporated many sci-fi themes (cloning, cyborgs, all-powerful "companies", genetic research, hybernation, and most importantly, evoultion and survival of species). Although I admit the last Alien film was the worst (campy comedy, Winona Ryder sucks) it used more of these themes than any other of the films. I can't wait until Alien5. I believe the fifth should be the final and that it should take place where each previous film has talked about but not dared go to: EARTH. When the Aliens infest Earth, mankind will be left with a dillema; fight back or nuke the whole planet? It'll be cool, regardless, and Sigorney Weaver's presence is manditory. Her character provides the maternal vibe that all of these life-issues revolve around. If she were replaced by a male character (would you prefer Bruce Willis or Mel Gibson?), nothing would make sense. PS--youre right, Brad Dourif is hopelessly typecasted. But thats his fate for being so perfect in Cookoo's Nest.
-
I to liked Alien Resurrection, it was quite different from the other Alien films, and I guess that was the point. But still it had some good moments, and it was visually interesting. I liked the idea of the cloned Ripley who was also part alien. I also enjoyed Michael Wincott's character and was also disappointed in his few minutes of screen time. I love Dan Hedaya, though this was one of his less memorable roles. And it was also good seeing the Alien get tortured as well. But even though I enjoyed all this, there were still slight problems with the film, most notoriously was the newborn. It was just to weird for me. Plus I agree that some of the characters were cliches as well. But it's still fun to watch. Though Aliens 3 still is not to my liking, but I have not seen it in a while, so maybe it's time for me to refresh my memory. Fincher is good and I'm happy to see him doing something different with Panic Room and Rama. And oh, by the way, isn't Arthur C. Clarke still alive? A talkbacker posted that he must be spinning, let's hope it's only because he is so happy that Rama is being made by a good team.
-
...it could be a man or a woman, just a new character, one that they didn't have to dream up this absurdly contrived plot device--cloning her you get the alien embryo still intact inside her--to keep the franchise going. I would have loved to see the movies do what the first comics series (Dark Horse) did, that's go with Hicks and Newt, but of course the third movie killed them both...but that doesn't mean they couldn't come up with another character. Think about it, Ripley just happened to be on the Nostromo when it was rerouted to LV-426. It could have been ANYONE...or is that too creative for Hollywood, coming up with a new, compelling character instead of just re-visiting old ones? There's nothing wrong with Sigourney Weaver, she's been great in all the Alien movies, but it's time to move on if they're going to do another one, IMHO.

Just because Fincher has made some great films since, still does
by fatal discharge
I liked the beginning, it was shocking, but it didn't lead anywhere. The story was terrible (all those rewrites killed it), none of the characters were likeable or distinguishable from each other due to everyone looking the same, the cinematography looked awful with everything a dull brown dingy color, Sigourney's performance was the worst of all the series, the action scenes of the alien chasing men with fish-eyed lens effect was laughable, and they kill off the best (only?) female action hero in film. On the other hand, Alien Resurrection is underrated. You have to look at it as a fun action/comedy romp. Sigourney's performance is great, she gets the alien/Ripley combo down just right and there are some truly disturbing scenes - the clones and the alien sex. The guy who said there's no way she could have memories - having alien dna in you which comes from a hive-organism that uses a communal mind could explain it (notice how she knows what the aliens are doing). I'm not saying all the ideas in the film are accurate though but since I found the film a lot of fun, it ddn't bother me too much. What they should've done after Aliens though was set the next sequel on Earth anyway, Oh well!!
-
OK, problem number one...plot points...what the fuck is a CLONE doing with memories?! two, one of the things i liked about Alien 3 is the feeling of despair Ripley had...she lost everything, TWICE even, and by the end of the movie, having to kill one of those Xenomorphs again, and one of em inside her, Ripley's a tortured soul. It works well...In Resurrection, Ripley's more like a cartoony Xena type character than the heroine of the past. Three, the lack of respect for the aliens....in the past, even in Aliens, where there's got to be hundreds of the things running around, you never saw the aliens fully....they were always shrouded in shadow...like nobody gets to live long enough to see one up close...Resurrection, the aliens are more like interstellar cockroaches.....
now, what I liked....the scene with the "experiment room", where there's all the failed experiments in trying to clone ripley, and Ripley coming face to face with the abomination that came before her.....the abomination's alive, but helpless for god knows how long....it's a deep scene....that I liked.....now, what should be done next? Three words....Aliens Versus Predator......this movie, done right (you listening, Cameron?!) would kick ass in ways inconceivable, and everybody knows it. -

Lightstormer, Xenomorphs, sequels... and things of that nature.
by psyclops
First to Lightstormer, I had many problems with ALIEN RESURRECTION. First, I think the casting was terrible. Winona Ryder seemed completely out of place and so did Ron Perlman surprisingly. Dan Hedaya was laughable! He played the part like a cab driver in space instead of the military officer he was supposed to be. Plus, Jean-Pierre Jeunet was the wrong choice to direct the film-- everything was so off the wall and the colors too fantastical to be real. I would like to have seen what Danny Boyle would have done with the movie. Also, the characters never really seemed that threatened by the situation they were in, there was never that realistic sense of panic and dread that terrified you the way ALIEN and ALIENS did. In the movie's defense, I did enjoy some of the action sequences (although, had ILM done the CGI effects I probably would have enjoyed it a bit more). The underwater stuff was interesting, but stretched the imagination to the point where I didn't relate it to anything 'ALIEN'. As for a clone with memories, this was all too briefly explained in the film. Ripley inheretid her memories from her previous incarnation because of her genetic mix with the Aliens. The aliens are like insects so they have an instictual knowledge or 'memory' inheretid through their genetics (like spiders knowing how to spin a web or ants building a colony). Ripley remembers fragments of her previous life because she is part Alien, and that also explains her collective memory and seemingly psychic knowledge of the aliens and there whereabouts (remember that bit where she knows that the Queen is in pain). Anyway, the film could have been better... even Joss Whedon himself agrees on that! I personally love the Alien movies, they are a special part of my childhood. They mean as much to me as Star Wars and Lord of the Rings means to other people. So Alien Resurrection was a very disappointing experience for me. At least with Star Wars and LOTR the filmmakers can learn from their mistakes the first time around and improve on the further installments to their commited trilogies,... I don't think I'll have another Alien movie to look forward to.
-
I just listened to that radio program, WOW! That was the coolest shit I've heard in a long while -- especially getting a chance to see Yoda weilding a lightsaber! That guy totally shit his pants at the end though, funniest thing I've ever heard!! I have a feeling Lucas will track him down pretty fast. He practically said what he did on the project and why he got fired.
-
Didn't expect my little post to start off another little Alien debate. I never said that Alien 3 was bad. I actually like the film. It's those scenes you mention, Psyclops, that should go back into the film. It worked fantastic in the novellisation. So why didn't we get to see it in film. It makes no sense. All I'm saying is that we got to see a film that didn't quite get there in realising it's material. Had the capture scenes and characterisations been originally edited in, I think Alien 3 would have been widely considered a strong entry into the Alien mythology. It's the little things that make a difference. As for Aliens invading Earth? Check out a trilogy of Dark Horse TPB's which detail the Alien invasion of earth or the novellisations of these comics by Steve Perry. Pure excellence. Thses stories are so cool that I don't care if the Aliens never make it to earth. The books left me satisfied completely. So if you guys haven't read these, do yourself a favour. And if you have read them again! But Aliens vs. Predator is one I long to see on screen. I consider the comic to be the storyboards for this film and I just love how well handled the two properties were merged together in one story. Absolute brillance.
-
The third (and fourth) Alien films do not exist as official installments of the series in my mind. I've seen them, but I prefer to imagine that Ripley, Newt and Hicks made it back to Earth safely after the end of Aliens. This is how Cameron intended it. It was completely disrespectful to his work to kill off Newt and Hicks at the begining of 3. After everything they went through in Aliens, they die from a bad plot device-- a ship malfunction. Some say that's the whole point-- the futility of life, etc. I say it was a copout. It wasn't Fincher's fault. I like his style. But the only way to make a sequel to Cameron's film was to have a teenage Newt (with maybe an underwear scene) battling an alien infestation on Earth. At the time the studio wouldn't do that for one reason alone: too expensive. They went with the cheapo script for sure. Now we will never see Aliens rampaging through futuristic city-scapes. Even now, as that kind of thing becomes CGI-feasible, that film should not be made. Not without Newt. So yeah, there were only two Alien films in my mind (in much the same way that there are only 2 Superman and Batman movies-- the first 2 in both cases). And one more thing, damn it. There was another huge problem with the later Alien movies. All this concern and attention given to a killer hive-mind species, while everyone, including apparently the entire human scientific community, COMPLETELY IGNORES THE FACT THAT ANOTHER INTELLIGENT SPACE-FARING, TECHNOLOGICALLY-ADVANCED SPECIES HAS BEEN DISCOVERED. The wrecked ship from the first film. Giger's spooky Elephant People. Other than the immediate danger imposed by the hive aliens, the discovery of the existence of a sentient race would completely overshadow mankind's concern with an apparently non-sentient species. But the Elephant People are never mentioned past the 2nd film! I know they figured into the comic series, but I always thought it would be awsome if they made the 3rd Alien film this way: The aliens invade Earth. The Elephant People show up in their crazy space ships, but communication proves a problem. They can help us but the humans must race against time (and those who believe the Elephant guys are also a threat) to befriend them and seek their help in exterminating the nasties. This film will never be made.
-
Ok guys, let's take the Alien discussion somewhere else! DAVID FINCHER IS DIRECTING A RAMA NOVEL. A really great director is going to make a really great novel into a movie. Hopefully the movie will be really great.
-
We don't need another copy-cat of Dinosaur or Final Fantasy. This is RENDEVOUS WITH RAMA for cryin' out loud. Make Rama itself CGI, and the characters and so on real. It would have a better effect! But, of course, that's my opinion. Won't see the movie until like thirty years later when everyone gets organized enough to start the pre-production on it. OH, well.

I agree with Psyclops.
Alien 3 had the most natural feeling of atmosphere and claustrophobia, I treasure Alien 3. Each alien movie has it's own unique blends of scary - Alien was a suspense, horror film; Aliens was just plane-ass scary, and jump-out-of-your-seat terror; whilst Alien3 had a...truly undescribable unique feeling to it, an almost alone, barren, desolet feelings, which was fantastic. All three films were masterpieces, until that shitty-ass piece of crackhair Alien Resurrection came out. Give me a break! The star of the movie is suppose to be aliens, not cloning! For God's sakes! In a normal alien movie, the part where the men aboard the scientific vessel are escaping, and that alien creeps in there, and tears ass and flesh out and beyond;...that should have been a creepy ass part. But instead they pass off the horror, and make it look like a misfortunate accident. Where's the slow, creepy movements into the sphere, and the terror on the men's faces as the alien stands a-tall with it's middle jaw unravelling and spit gooing down it's fangs? Hmmmm? I didn't see that shit in there! Pathetic! By the way, if they make an alien movie, they should base it on Earth. Aliens on Earth! What a plot!! -

When I read Rama i instantly thought 'now here is a classic speilberg movie waiting to be made'... the possibilies of what Fincher may do with the narrative is really exciting.
And to that whole 'Aliens vs Predator would be just a excuse for huge cgi fight scenes' is rather stupid. Obviously you have no imagintation... i guess Kubricks 'The Shining' is just an excuse to have a guy run around with an axe and kill shit... -
Like the subject says. =)

I went to the rendezvouswithrama.com site and discovered the concept art done by my fiend and collegue Yannick Dussault. I worked with him on several productions, and he's one of the world's best matte painters and a kickass CG artist. I hope his designs are used in the film when it goes into production.
-
nothing happens till like the second or third sequel!
-
I thought the three "Rama" sequels that Clarke wrote with Gentry Lee - Rama II, The Gardens Of Rama, and Rama Revealed -were actually better than the first book. And by the way, for those of you saying that the studio screwed-up Joss Whedon`s original screenplay for "Alien: Resurrection", I have this to say: I`ve read the original screenplay, and it was exactly the same as the eventual movie, save for a few action setpieces and a few more disposable characters.
