ELECTRIC DREAMS, a new anthology series based on the stories of Philip K. Dick, is set to release in the U.S. as an Amazon Original sometime in 2018. The series contains 10 episodes that are meant to stand alone in the series, each with different directors, writers, casts, locations, and designs. The cast is full of wonderful talent such as Steve Buscemi (Fargo), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Geraldine Chaplin (Doctor Zhivago), and Essie Davis (The Babadook).
What I like about Dick’s stories was his way of breathing life into the characters he created. They live normal routine lives but suddenly a great, mysterious, scary, or unexplainable event would turn everything upside down, leaving them to make sense of a nonsensical world. They stumble around their existence, ever searching for a hidden meaning to explain circumstances that occur around them. Some question if they can trust their own perception and reasoning as true while others lose their sense of reality and become hollow shells of who they were before the incident. Ultimately, his characters share a common thread; they are extensions of Dick questioning what reality truly is and how people interact with each other in crisis.
Whether ELECTRIC DREAMS will achieve greatness is debatable but my little P.K.D heart wants it to be a success. The trailer definitely gives me hope that the series could be spectacular. I am certainly glad to see so many familiar faces among the cast.
