Suicide Squad 2 settles on a director!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Variety is reporting that Warner Bros finally has their director for Suicide Squad 2 after David Ayer abandoned ship.

This director is Gavin O'Connor who is... a director, I guess. He puts movies together well. They look good, they're almost always super solid, but I don't really get the sense of a voice when I see his films. Miracle is pretty great, Warrior is solid, The Accountant was silly, but fun, Jane Got A Gun is fine. Pride and Glory is fine.

I didn't always agree with Ayer's instincts on the first film, but I think a lot of what people like about it is due to him. The music selection, the playfulness contrasted against a gritty backdrop. Unfortunately a lot of what people didn't like about the movie was due to him, too.

Suicide Squad is a mess, but it's a mess filled with personality. The film was at its best when the gang was bouncing off each other and having fun in the face of certain death. I expect O'Connor to provide a more tonally consistent movie with less lows than the first film, but I'm also a little worried it's going to have a lot less personality as well.

He feels like a safe choice to me, but they could do worse. He's shown a talent for character drama before. This could be O'Connor's chance to really spread his wings. Thoughts?
