Wanna Know What MEL GIBSON's Doing Next' MORIARTY Knows!!

Published at:  Jan 05, 2001 9:30:33 AM CST

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

One of my favorite spies here in town, a long time agent of chaos who's given me many rock-solid scoops over the years, recently gave me some info that got me caught up in all sorts of cease-and-desist letters and threats of legal action, and now he's been driven underground. He's on the move, trying to stay one step ahead of those who would destroy him. THE FUGITIVE GUY took the time to drop by The Moriarty Labs on his way out of town, though, to drop off the following note, which I found rolled up and stuffed in Mongo's nose when he came in from his walk this morning:

Mel Gibson has signed on to star in WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE...AND YOUNG. It
is the story of Lt. Col. Hal Moore (played by Gibson), who led 80 men of
the US Cavalry into a small clearing in the Drang Valley of Vietnam in
1965. 2000 enemy soldiers surrounded them and the battle was one of the most
savage in U.S. History. The film wil be directed by Randall Wallace, who
Directed THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK and is credited as a writer on PEARL
HARBOR.

Oh... my. Sounds like the perfect match of director and material. I'm going to start digging and see what we can come up with. According to Harry, Mel Gibson's staying with the real-life Lt. Col. Hal Moore in middle-America right now, soaking up every detail about the guy. If nothing else, we're guaranteed a spectacle. Let's hope it's a great one.

"Moriarty" out.

    This is The Lost Patrol

    by reedyb

This is The Lost Patrol, a movie that Variety listed over a month ago. The Hollywood Stock Exchange Lists this description.

"The Lost Patrol is a Vietnam War story detailing the first battle between U.S. troops with the Viet Cong. Randall Wallace (The Man in the Iron Mask) will direct from his own adaptation of the book We Were Soldiers Once And Young. The 34-day battle at La Drang pitted 400 American soldiers who were helicoptered in against an enemy force 3000 strong. Mel Gibson will star.

Wallace also penned the script to Braveheart and Pearl Harbor. Revolution Studios will produce the film with Mel Gibson's Icon Productions. "

    History vs. Spoilers

    by talkingmachine

I wondered if anyone was going to bring up the "spoilers" question. This was something that came up a few months ago when Perfect Storm was released. Do events that occurred in history require a spoiler? Apparntly, the critics and websites don't think so. Only films like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings seem to warrant such reguard. Give us a heads up next time...will ya?

When is Mel going to stop doing the Braveheart "schtick"?

    by iamlegolas

When Braveheart came out, it took me until the re-release in the theaters (to garner Oscar support) for me to see it, and only THEN because one of my jaded movie friends happened to see it (because he wanted to spend 3 hours in an air conditioned theater during the summer; he didn't have A/C in his apartment) and raved about it. IT WAS FUCKIN' COOL. Mel finally brought Mad Max back, and with Monty Python-ish Medieval Violence!!! Okay, then THE PATRIOT came out, and I shined that one...."it's BRAVEHEART during the Civil War". I saw it recently on video because a friend rented it, and I was right. Now this Army movie....is Mel not going to stop remaking BRAVEHEART until he does a movie involving a future Flash Gordon type character rebelling against a Ming The Merciless type bad guy? Or maybe he'll start going backwards and lead a dinosaur rebellion as caveman who has a kindship with the dinosaurs (yeah I know cavemen and dinosaurs didn't exist together, but Hollywood doesn't). Oh yeah, and wasn't he the lead chicken in CHICKEN RUN, leading a rebellion? O.T.: When will some of the talk-backs ever be fixed and post correctly and not run on to the right of my browser? Someone's asleep (or most likely past out) at the keyboard... THANKS FOR READING THIS! :)

Hooray for Mel! One more chance to see his "Blank-faced-relentless-angel-of-death" face. As seen on Braveheart, Patriot, all the Lethal Weapons, Payback, all the Mad Max films, Ransom . . . still, nothing better than watching an ageing Hollywood star trying to be the war hero he never was . . . my personal bitchiness aside, at least the man can act, and that one thing has brought me back to his (non-What Women Want) films time and again. I'll be keeping an eye on this one, but would prefer a different director/writer. Remember, Randall Wallace is the man who gave the line "It's war . . . get used to it" or something familiar. Urgh. He and his men decide it's up to them to stop these 'gods' before they come to 'the states' and kill their families including Mels which is comprised of a blind wife, deaf son and his daughter who through a serious accident with hot pockets now has been deprived of taste buds. It is becuase of this that Mel needs to kill the asian 'gods' however it soon turns into a slaughter as the gods have apparently discovered 'wire work' and use this new tool to cut Mels troops to pieces. Mel is forced to kill them all with his bare hands in the end as he is the sole survivor and the film ends with Mel ripping Chow Yun Fats throat out with his teeth. 'You can take our lives...but you can never take our mediocre plots!' Mel will cry over the dead asian gods body.

    Scouting Locations from AP

    by reedyb

    http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010105/en/mel_gibson_1.html

    Gibson Tours Ga. Locations

CUSSETA, Ga. (AP) - Mel Gibson was scouting possible locations for a proposed film about Vietnam in this west Georgia town bordering Fort Benning Thursday. Surrounded by admiring waitresses at the Four Winds restaurant, he pointed toward retired Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and whispered: ``He's the real hero.''

Moore, co-author of the best seller ``We Were Soldiers Once ... and Young,'' smiled when he heard Gibson's remark, then said Gibson could play him in a movie based on the 1992 book.

``I had always thought that John Wayne would have been the ideal choice. But Mel will do.''

Moore, who lives in Auburn, Ala., was a commander with the 11th Air Assault Division in the 1965 battle of Ia Drang Valley, the American forces' first major confrontation with North Vietnamese Army regulars.

To Avidfan from a limey bastard

    by tombstone

You bring up some valid points but you seem to forget a few key moments in history.

    1) 1945 America drops 2 atomic bombs on Japan.

2)World War 1 & World War 2 - Black soldiers pushed to the frontline to be "cannon fodder" ahead of their white comrades.

    3) Lets not forget the klu klux klan (Oh I forgot that's not history it's still going on today)

If you want to see a good film check out Spielberg's Empire of the Sun, ir really shows American soldiers in a good light.

What is this thing about English people and bad teeth?

Is it the same as the thing about Americans being fat idle bastards?
( stereotypes are a bad thing)

America is a great nation with a-lot of great people and a great history so why let pricks like Mel Gibson make films that are historically inaccurate.

England has done a-lot of bad things throughout history, but America's just as bad

You are a typical English asshole who doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. Vietnam was a different kind of war and I seriously doubt England would have done any better in a similar situation, both at home and abroad. The fact that as good as you think England is; keep this in mind: the colonies didn't win what we call the Revolutionary War, you guys lost it. We also kept England from being conquered by Hitler early in World War II with the supplies we sent over. As for the bullshit about how evil the United States is for dropping 2 atomic weapon on Japan; more would have died on both sides if the United States had invaded Japan instead. If you can pull something off and lose fewer of you troops then you do it. That is how war works. It's one thing to fight a war with as few casualties on your side, it's another thing to try to keep anyone on either side from being killed. People die in wars. Japan would not have surrendered if those bombs had not been dropped. Fewer people lost their lives as a result.

The atomic weapons issue was just to get back at old avid fan for showing England in a bad light.

England , USA, France, Spain, Germany, Japan we've all done things to be ashamed of in the past. Prove that we haven't and
I'll become Mel Gibson's biggest fan

But now we're getting away from the point, damn that Mel Gibson his dodgy acting, dodgy hair perm and unusual take on history will be the death of us

What about Mel playing Sadam Hussain in a Gulf War epic maybe he'll film it with old Sadam as the winner.

Mel mentioned this movie when he was on Rosie promoting What Women Want.

He mentioned talking a little time off to devleope the new movie and to help scout locations
