LOBO reports in with news from Mexico on Carpenter's new Vampire flick and the Talented Mr. Ripley sequel

Published at:  Jan 04, 2001 11:01:22 PM CST

Father Geek reporting in with a couple of stories LOBO sent me tonight. These are 2 projects I'm going to be watching out for. Here's what LOBO learned today...

¿ Que Pasó Cinemaniacos ? LOBO here with the latest on the sequel of Carpenter's "Vampires", this was sent to me from one of our cuates in Mexico and this is what he got from the newspaper REFORMA, so let's see where the bloodsuckers are going to hide from the Hunters, an Aztec ruin maybe ?...

Hi LOBO here is something about the movie "Vampires; Los Muertos"..

Jon Bon Jovi will hunt "Vampiros" in Mexico. Rocker Jon Bon Jovi is in Mexico City, rehearsing his role as a vampire killer in the upcoming movie "Vampires: Los Muertos", produced by legendary filmmaker John Carpenter, and to be directed by Tommy Lee Wallace ( IT and Halloween III ).

The film, a sequel to the successful Carpenter film "Vampires" starring James Woods and Thomas Ian Griffith, will also count with young mexican actor Diego Luna, who will portray one of Jovi's allies to destroy hordes of night creatures aiming to conquer the human race.

"Vampires: Los Muertos" will begin shooting on January 10th in locations in the city of Mexico and the state of Morelos for seven weeks. Actor Tim Guinee is the only actor from the first film who will repeat his role as a messenger from the Vatican to erradicate the vampires who desperately search for a cross (Brazer's cross) which would give them the power to defy sunlight.

Well there you have it locos and I know for sure that more news about this film will be poping-up during the time of the shooting, So I will either write about it on Latin-AICN or just like this one, so be alert if you want to know what's going on with this film...

Hey Cinejunkies, LOBO here just bringing you a little bit of what I've heard on the sequel to the movie "The Talented Mr. Ripley", we all know that in the first version of this film Tom Ripley got away with his plans and with the homicides, but this time he comes back a 20 years after of that trip to Europe and he is still doing things his way...

The character Tom Ripley comes back to the big screen, this time with the Actor JOHN MALKOVICH (The Talented Mr. Malcovich---sorry I couldn't resist) a guy that in my own opinion is perfect to play this character beacuse of his acting range, he can go from looking extremely evil to being the most charming guy in the world. This film based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith, John Malkovich will be playing the role of the psychopathic killer Tom Ripley 20 years older. This character as you all know was played by Matt Damon in the original version "The Talented Mr. Ripley" back in 1999. Now Tom Ripley comes back after being offended in a party by one of the guests and to take revenge he plans on framing the assesination of two mobsters on the men who offended him. This movie is named "Ripley's Game" directed by Liliana Cavani from Italy, this project will start filming sometime this month at several locations in Italy. We'll see what Ripley has for us this time and see how he get's away with his sickevil plans..I am sure our friends from Euro-AICN will report more on this subject since they have a closer eye and grasp on this one....Hasta la vista !!

Feliz Año Nuevo and let Knowles know how much I enjoyed his LOTR chronicles in New Zealand.

Make sure to send me any news on the Latin cinema industry, or other cine news you find in the Latin press at My Cave in the Hill Country

    Ripley's "sickevil" plan?

    by rebel_scum

The question is: Will there be any homosexual obsessions marketed in the trailers as harmless jealousy of said object-of-obessions's girlfriend?

What will Harry do this time to see a JC Vampire flick?

    by choda

Will he do someting "extreme" and fly to Paris, France like he did when the first JC Vampire flick came out? To this day, I still can't believe Harry did that just to see a movie! Vampires none the less. Oh well, guess he's got money to burn.

    Is it worth it??

    by skelly_45

Jon Bon Jovi is a singer not an actor, meatloaf manages to pull off both but i don't think Jon Bon Jovi will. Vampires was a really average film for John Carpenter, so i have a feeling this will be below average.

John Malkovich: "can go from evil to charming" REALLY???

    by mr_intimidation

Dudes and dudettes, I have to say, I have NEVER seen Malkovich do anything that could even be remotely considered 'charming." The guy's just CREEPY. Yeah, he's a good actor, love him in almost every movie. But in what movie exactly was he "charming?" The guy is creepy live, on talk shows, and in his movies. That's just him. Malkovich IS creepy, and that's that.

    Malcovich as Ripley

    by talkingmachine

Was there are sequel to the novel or is this an orginal work based on the characters from the book? You know, this was one movie where I never thought I'd see a part two...or even thought I'd want to see the further exploits of Ripley the homicidal geek (I'm guessing we might see an American Psycho sequel now.) Funny though, he passed on Spidey to do a sequel...which are normally done for $$...the same reason he passed on Spidey. Oh well...comics are not considered as respectable as literature...I suppose.

    Malkovich as Ripley??????

    by 593733

I heard the rumour about 6 months ago that in this picture Pierce Brosnan was to play Ripley.
Whilst I would never claim Brosnan to be a better actor than Malkovich I think he would be better for this part. Whenever Malkovich plays charm there is an obvious creepiness underneath whereas Brosnan can play it with the smarm and arrogance that Ripley must surely have acquired over the years. Also, it would do Brosnans career a lot of good for him to play an anti-hero.

    There were 3 Ripley novels

    by toronto

I read them about two years ago - Talented Mr. Ripley, Ripley Under Ground and Ripley's Game, taking place within about 5 years of the first one. The plot you've described isn't the same as I remember for Ripley's Game the novel ... but that's okay, because the book wasn't that great anyway. The disappointing thing is that they've made Tom so old and skipped over Ripley Under Ground which I thought was a better book - great plot, very amusing and whole new sides to Tom Ripley. I just hope they write and cast his wife correctly, she's a great confidante and conspirator in the novels.

John Carpenter.....the only thing I can think to say is, he suck

    by tender branson

"Vampires" was on my must see list for 1998. The trailer, (While featuring Marilyn Manson, which was only slightly better than "Dragula" by Rob Zombie, which is the most overused song in history, kinda pissed me off, but somehow fit.) pushed every single, geeky cool button in my brain. You had James Woods, who can get my in a seat no matter what the fuck he's doing. The guy could read the phone book and look cool. (Why hasn't Quentin Tarantino cast him in a flick yet?) You had that "The Wild Bunch" march with all the bad ass vampire-killers. You had slut hooker vampire. You had Daniel Baldwin lookin' scruffy and cool. You had a FUCKING EVIL head vampire played by the most evil man that Ralph Macchio ever had to face. (I am of the firm opinion that Thomas Ian Griffith is one of the most underused actors working today. ("Excessive Force", while a tenth rate Chuck Norris flick knock-off was very enjoyable for what it was.) You had James Woods little, "You ever seen a real vampire, padre?" speech. Then you had this flurry of horror and bad ass action that gave you goose bumps and made you completely hate the "Blade" preview that came after.
This is why in a perfect world my job would be to make movie trailers. The movie trailer is the most perfect part of any film. It's become 60% of why I go to the movies. In a movie trailer, a film can seem to everything it's not. In a movie trailer, a film can rise above the pathetic meanderings of the writer and director to become something thilling, memorable and totally worth paying for. In the movie trailer, the films worst moments could be it's best. In the movie trailer you have the opportunity to enthrall, confuse, delight, and whet the audience's appetite for more. (You can totally FUCK UP and give away the entire film, but then again, sometimes, WHO FUCKING CARES? Which brings me to my next point....) And last but, not least, in the movie trailer, you can educate the masses as to which film would and wouldn't be a good investment of their time and money.
You see, I thought the first trailer for "Blade" sucked incredibly. It was off pace, looked boring and had Wesley Snipes....seeming to be a very chatty version of "Blade". You had that fat vampire on screen too long, you had a general sense that if Steven Seagal had been cast instead, it might be a little better. (Which is never a good sign.)
"Vampires" had my money based on that trailer and lo and behold, the release day came and my ass was in line, ON MY FUCKING BIRTHDAY!!!! (I'm forever cursed to see films that suck crusty dick on my birthday. Fuck you very much, God.)
And what to my wondering eyes should appear? But, a low budget montage, and priests getting slapped in the ear. There was no plot, something about a cross, but I wasn't for sure. I knew in a minute I'd been fucked by John Carpenter.
The film was the WORST KIND OF SHIT that can possibly occupy a megaplex. All build up, no payoff, a total waste of rescources and a dispatch of a cool villian in the weakest and laziest way: easily.
John Carpenter has forgotten how to make a film. I think that "Halloween" and "The Thing" and "In the Mouth of Madness" and "The Dark Half" were total mistakes. (His only really good films.) "Escape From New York" was all Kurt Russell, the bad ass carried a weak ass film. "Escape From L.A." same story, only weaker bad ass and a total disregard for the novelty of Bruce Campbell. Not to mention wasting total hottie Michelle Forbes, who I would be honored to have autopsy my bullet riddled corpse. "The Fog". This film was like: HOMELESS PEOPLE WORK FOR FOOD AND THEY ALREADY LOOK THE PART, LET'S HIRE THEM!!!! I'm not going to go through his entire line up here, but suffice it to say that whatever he had, is gone and is never coming back.
On that note, I'm really looking forward to the preview to "Vampires 2". I'll save my money and go see "Blade 2" because the director of that film knows how to make a fucking movie.

    Ripley's fucked up life

    by willardeisenbaum

I never knew the Tom Ripley character would perist and keep on like he apparently does, in four more books. I saw the Talented movie only once, and I liked it, but I came away from it thinking, he's doomed, he'll never get outta this, he's going to have to kill that whole other party of his acquaintances on the boat. With my ignorance of the Ripley book(s), I was able to savor the ambiguous open-ended ending. I kinda liked it better when I thought, oh yeah, he's goin' down this time.

    Ripley's Game...

    by iris741

was already adapted to the screen in THE AMERICAN FRIEND (1977, German, Wim Wenders). Dennis Hopper is Ripley in this one and he's great. Go watch that. Ripley is also found in PURPLE NOON (PLEIN SOLEIL) and apparently something called MAYHEM which I've heard absolutely nothing about.
Dennis Hopper is the best Ripley so far.

They've already made a movie based on Ripley's Game

    by der_billybopeep

It's called 'Der amerikanische Freund' (the American Friend). It's an old 70s Wim Wender's film, and it is one of my all time favorites. There is no way that they will top that one. Go check it out.

THE DARK HALF Was A George Romero Movie, To Show What A No-Life

    by buzz maverik

But I hear ya, Tender. Carpenter, Romero and Hooper have been disappointing for a long time, to say the least. Most filmmakers seem to have a short creative life, with some exceptions. These guys should have moved into producing and should be bringing new blood in for the writing and directing. No age-ism, more energy-ism or balls-ism, or quality-ism if anything.

i'm not to hyped about this Ripley sequel.....

    by haystack calhoun

for one thing I can't imagine Matt Damon looking like John Malkovich in 20 years. Don't get me wrong I think John Malkovich is an amazing actor, but they should have gotten someone who at least looks remotely like Damon. Like Val Kilmer or something. I thought that Matt Damon did an outstanding job in "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and that bastard Sean Penn stole his Oscar nomination. The storyline of the sequel just sounds really stupid, but seeing as how this is a really watered down description i'm sure it will be fleshed out much more and be fantastic. I've been mouthing off a lot today, just got done bitching at MTV for voting Joanny off, she was a cool chick folks. God people are fickle.

    not really a sequel

    by uga

"Ripley's Game" is a sequel to "Talented" like "Silence of the Lambs" was a sequel to "Manhunter." Different people involved throughout, from studio heads to best boys.

  • I do like John Malcovich (I'm sorry if I am mispelling his name - but I have a hangover today). BUT, this villain thing is getting way out of hand. I totally dig him in Being John Malcovich - it was cool that he did it. BUT BUT BUT - Johnny boy - please, not another villain.

    by uga

I'll slam somebody when they deserve to be slammed, and I'll praise somebody when they deserve it as well - and Jon Bon Jovi is very surprisingly a solid actor. Not that that will make me go see "Vampires 2," but I thought I would defend him. Oh, and this has nothing to do with the fact that I saw my first live naked girl at his concert when I was 12.

    Vampires?

    by ownerx

Is there anyone out there who actually thought that Vampires was
a good movie? It was a total waste
of talent. James Woods and John Carpenter should hide their heads
in shame for that one. Thomas Ian
    Griffith made better direct-to-HBO
flicks. I had high hopes for Daniel Baldwin, but he should go back to freebasing cocaine and watching porn. The slaughter scene
at the motel was one of the most lazily filmed action pieces ever.To top it off, I watched it after a night of doing Ecstacy so
I was already depressed enough. Leave Vampires in the coffin.

    Carpenter Rules

    by veidt

I won't waste space on a list of the guy's classics - that would start with 1974's Dark Star, by the way. But I will say that 1998's Vampires was a damn cool flick with another classic Carpenter anti-hero with James Woods' unforgiving Jack Crow. As for the sequel, who knows?

as if screwing up the first movie wasn't enough, c'mon john, not more of that.listen - i'm a big carpenter fan, and when he got handed the license for john steakly's vampire$ i was elated - - - until he turned out his worst movie. its especially unforgivable since, if you've ever read vampire$ you know that its already basically a screenplay that just needs to be filmed.
    and now more crap.
more crap with jon bon jovi.
so is he gonna ride a steel horse on his way to killin vampires??

can I just take a moment to say that I am sick to death of the same weak vampire movie being made over and over again?! I love the whole vamp mythos, I used to have fangs that had to be surgically removed, my high school nick-name was Fangs...but I am so bored of it. there are millions of books in the Library of Congress with wonderful plot twists and characters. please stop with these movies.
