Science Vs. Cinema: VALERIAN!

Greetings from Portugal!

James Darling and I are back with another installment of Science Vs. Cinema!  This one is on VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS.   Long time fans know that we usually produce half-hour long episodes, like we did for THE MARTIAN and ARRIVAL, where we talk to both the filmmakers about how they portray science and we talk to the scientists who do similar work.  But we’ve also done short episodes, like we did with PASSENGERS.  This episode is one of those shorter ones, though we did talk to some of the people involved in the movie at the premiere.  Incidentally, we recently made a different kind of episode (not about movies) about the upcoming total solar eclipse in the US on August 21st.  You can see that one here.

I’m actually in Portugal right now at the Dark Sky Alqueva.  That’s a big star party and celebration out in a region that is one of the darkest sites in Europe.  I premiered the first couple of minutes of the episode here, before giving my talk on the Science of Arrival.  That’s also made the development of this episode a bit more difficult, as James and I have been trying to get it done across different time zones and different obligations.  I like the way it turned out though.  As usual, I try not to spoil much in this episode, so it is safe to see before watching the movie.

Here it is!
