The trailer for Guillermo del Toro's THE SHAPE OF WATER shows off a fishy love story...

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Any new Guillermo del Toro movie is something to be celebrated. Big or small, in Spanish or English, del Toro brings his big vision to every project. Sometimes that vision strikes a chord with a mass audience, sometimes it strikes a chord with a critical audience, but you can almost always expect his work to impress.

That's because the dude gives a shit. He also happens to know how to shoot a gorgeous-looking movie and write people you tend to care about.

I had two immediate thoughts when watching the below trailer. One was "Yep, that looks like a Guillermo del Toro movie" and the other was "It also looks a teensy, tiny bit like there's a Jeunet influence to it. Guillermo's smaller stuff always seems a little dark and real (whenever there's not a Faun or something on the screen, of course). This one has already checked off most of del Toro's fetishes, but has done so with what looks to be a bit more of a sense of quirkiness than I was expecting.

Maybe I'm crazy, but it's something I noticed. Take a look at the trailer yourself and let me know if you think I imagined it.

No matter what, that's a hell of a cast. Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Stuhlbarg, David Hewlett and, of course, Doug Jones as a fishy misunderstood, mistreated fish monster.

The Shape of Water hits theater screens this December.
