Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. One of the highlights of CinemaCon this year was Hugh Jackman appearing on stage with a glimpse at his new big movie musical. It wasn't the starpower on display that made such a strong impression on me, it was the obvious passion about this project from Jackman.
He's been workshopping this musical for years and when he spoke about it you could tell he was both proud of what they've accomplished and nervous about the big gamble they're taking. It's a crapshoot how modern audiences will react to a big, earnest movie musical.
The movie appears to wear its heart on its sleeve and is daring enough to do that instead of try a more cynical deconstruction of the genre.
