Democrat Jon Ossoff leads Karen Republican Handel 49.0 percent to 48.9 percent, with 2.1 percent undecided and a 4.4% margin of error, according to a poll of 500 “likely voters” conducted by WSB-TV, ABC’s Atlanta TV affiliate. That’s a tie.
If Ossoff wins, he’ll be the first Democrat to win Georgia’s sixth congressional district since the 1970s, when Democrat John J. Flynt decided not to run for re-election and Republican Newt Gingrich became the first Republican in history to win that seat.
Ossoff is a 30-year-old half-Australian, half-Jewish “Star Wars” enthusiast. Though he was born and reared in Georgia’s sixth congressional district, he sports no hillbilly accent. Handel, 55, looks like his mom.
The media will be watching today’s Ossoff-Handel runoff carefully, as many suspect it could prove a bellwether for next year’s midterm elections.
