It will not be Top Gun 2, but rather Top Gun: Maverick, so says Maverick himself, Mr. Tom Cruise. He revealed it to Access Hollywood during a junket interview for The Mummy.

While he wouldn't reveal any info about potential returning cast members, I gotta say that I like how into this he seems to be and how he promises to bring the tone of the original back for this many-years-later sequel.
The first Top Gun was made in the heyday of big dumb action movies taking themselves super seriously. It made for a rather unique kind of movie and it'll be interesting if they really can capture that feeling today.
If I were Val Kilmer I'd be hitting up some of them superhero trainer people and getting into A+ shape. If Mark Hamill could do it, so can you Val! We want you in this next one! The Iceman must return!
