Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. This SXSW had a lot of great stuff on offer, but one of my favorite movies to play that fest was The Big Sick. Sure, I'm a sucker for a good romantic comedy, but I'm a double sucker for a good unconventional romantic comedy, which this movie certainly is.
Kumail Nanjiani plays himself in a tale that is very, very close to how he and Emily Gordon got together. The authenticity to it makes all the difference and Kumail knocks it out of the park in the lead.
This is the first "produced by Judd Apatow" in a while that hits the same notes his early films did, landing in that sweet spot somewhere between sappy/sentimental and vulgar/juvenile.
It's already one of my favorite movies of the year and I don't expect it to fall too far. Check out the trailer and make sure to seek the flick out when it debuts next month.
