Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. News recently broke that Ang Lee was trying to resurrect an older project called Gemini Man, a sci-fi thriller about clones and now it looks like they're making a real big push to make it happen. THR reports that Lee and Skydance are in talks to land an A-lister for the lead, noneother than Will Smith.
I read a draft of this script well over 10 years ago. At the time Mel Gibson was attached to star, I believe. It was a solid thriller script, grounded sci-fi, about an older hitman who wants out and ends up being hunted by his clone, who is younger and in top physical shape.
With de-aging becoming a pretty common CG tool now I can see why the project appeals to producers. I'm just worried that we've seen this set up done well a few times now. Looper and the recent Logan jump to mind.
However, Will Smith facing off with ID4-era Will Smith could be a lot of fun. The only real issue is that Smith doesn't look world-worn to me, so I don't see it being a drastic comparison. Could you imagine if they went back to Mel Gibson now and it's him fighting his Road Warrior-era self? That would be a movie I'd wait in line for.
What do you folks think?
