Ye Meng reports on the remake of QUIET AMERICAN
Father Geek here... This is exactly the kind of film that should be remade, if you want to do remakes instead of new, totally original motion pictures. Marlon Brando's QUIET AMERICAN was a very good movie, but not a GREAT one. So the new film makers are not starting out by shooting themselves in the foot. They got a great novel and a good 60's flick to build on, the director and cinematographer are perfect for this movie and the cast should kick ass. It will be interesting to see Brendan tackle the Brando character. Its a good choice for him. He needs to establish himself in more gritty dramatic parts like this.
Ye is here!
There is a new film waiting for Michael Caine, Brendan
Fraser and Jean Réno, called The Quiet American. Based
on the same name novel by Graham Green (written in
1955) and with the background set in the pre-Vietnam
war era (the war involving the French not the
Americans, which is in the late 50's), it tells the story of
a British columnist (Michael Caine), a French army
officer (Jean Réno) and an American idealist (Brendan
Fraser). It will be directed by Phillip Noyce (Patriot
Game, Clear and Present Danger, The Bone Collector,
etc.).
The cinematographer will be the one-time classmate of
Phillip Noyce, Australian Christopher Doyle.
Christopher Doyle made his name in Hong Kong and is
famous for making movies with Hong Kong director Wong
Kar-Wai. His latest film "In the Mood For Love", also
directed by Wong Kar-Wai, has been the no. 3 of 10
best films by Time magazine (only next to "Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Chicken Run"), and has earned
three best cinematography awards for him (Cannes Film
Festival, Taiwan's Golden Horse Film Festival and
Asian-Pacific Film Festival). After meeting with Jean
Réno in Paris, Christopher Doyle has traveled to Ho
Chi Minh City (Saigon) to look for locations.
I
suspect it is not an American backed movie, otherwise it will
be the first US film shot in Vietnam since the end of
the Vietnam War. Anyway, after "The Quiet American",
Doyle will try to direct for the second time to make
"Mother of Mt. Fuji".

I really like Father Geek's intros. Mr. Knowles has taste and perspective about movies, books and how things should be done in Hollywood. I know, because the things he said about remakes, original films and the QUIET AMERICAN novel and film are exactly what I think too.
-
Brando never starred in Quiet American. His film was called Ugly American which was released in 1963 and was based on a novel by someone else, not Graham Green. -
There was a 1958 version of Quiet American with Audie Murphy and Michael Redgrave. But there was no Brando. I wish there was.
It was directed by Joseph Mankweitz who went to direct Cleopatra. -
The original QUIET AMERICAN was a pretty good movie. Mankiewiecz made some great movies (ALL ABOUT EVE, LETTER TO THREE WIVES, and THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR) and this one is almost up there. But Noyce as the director of the remake? I'm not so sure. He has such simplistic view on world politics that I'm afraid this may turn into another CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER. Harry, next time you make any comment on any film, make sure you check with IMDB or something. It's embarrassing. Yes, Mankiewiecz and Brand worked on two movies: JULIUS CAESAR and GUYS AND DOLLS but not on this one.

Christopher Doyle is the worlds greatest lenser this side of Vittorio Storaro. There

Speaking of Mankiewicz, I recently saw his movie, The Barefoot Contessa, which he also wrote and starred Bogart and Ava Gardner. I was completely blown away. Brilliantly written (the writing is on par with Mankiewicz's All About Eve) with intelligent, moving performances. I highly recommend it. Anyone see it?

As in...Brendan Fraser has not showed he can act his way out of one. I guess compared to Keanu "Whoa" Reeves, he looks rather Brando-like, but that's just not a fair comparison, I know. Why not get a more believable dramatic actor, like, oh, Skeet Ulrich, Jon Bon Jovi, or the guy who disputes late fees at my local Blockbuster? Actually I'm half-kidding. If Brendan doesn't sleep his way through this like he did in Mummy or Bedazzled (man, that was just...a Brendan Fraser performance, through and through, wasn't it?,) and puts up a performance similar to his pretty much only good dramatic performance (Gods & Monsters, of course playing off Ian McKellan helps,) who knows? Maybe he can shake off the lunky goofball typecast a little further, and actually move into full-on marketability. Just NO MORE CARTOON-BASED MOVIES, DAMMIT!

i've said it before and i'll no doubt have to say it again--frasier is a joke of an actor. he's has this dazed, unintelligent, "where is the camera, where is the camera, where is the--oh, there it is" look on his face in every film i've seen him in, including gods and monsters. he should stick to what he knows--playing cavemen.

Hey Ye Meng, I beg to differ. The first US movie to be directed
by lenny nero
I should know, he graduated from the school I'm currently attending, Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, and he's quite a claim to fame of our film department. Check out bio at http://movielink.imdb.com/Bio?Bui,+Tony

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall Brando being anywhere near the film version of Graham Greene's "The Quiet American". Wasn't (former WWII hero) Audie Murphy in it? Know your history, or you'll never understand what's coming next.
-
Now I remember his film. However, there is one thing I do want to point out: Three Seasons is more Vietnamese than American and The Quiet American is the interpretation of Vietnam from the Westerner
-
If I'm not mistaken, Three Seasons IS from an American's point of view. Tony Bui is American (of Vietnamese descent) and so is Harvey Keitel, who appears in the film as a Vet who returns to Saigon.
-
this was a great book, but the view is from a Western European point of view, not just Western.
-
wasnt' tony bui's 'three seasons'
an american film made in vietnam?
