Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. THR says that Michael Shannon has taken the lead on the shortlist of actors to play Cable in Deadpool 2.
Now, this isn't the first time his name has come up in speculation, but the context before was that he couldn't make it work in his schedule. Not now, says THR, which says that Shannon is the top of the list with Stranger Things' David Harbour a close second.
I think Harbour would be a lot of fun in the role, but Michael Shannon really excites me because I don't know exactly how he'll play it. I mean, Cable's gotta be the deadly serious foil for the zany Deadpool and I know Shannon's glare could freeze anyone in place, so he's got that down.
But would he play it a little off-kilter, a bit insane? I think he might and that'd be fun as hell to watch in the Deadpool universe.
In case you weren't a Marvel kid growing up, Cable is a partly cybernetic soldier from the future who also happens to be Cyclops' son from a fucked up possible timeline. He's kind of altruistic and super violent and takes no shit, which is naturally why he was paired with Deadpool for their own run of really funny and messed up comics.
His backstory is a bit too convoluted and weird to fit into the current cinematic X-Men universe, but he's a really cool character, both in design and execution, so it's a pretty exciting to see him involved in Deadpool 2, no matter which awesome actor gets the part.
