Is Saddam Hussein Trying To Steal Christmas'

Published at:  Dec 19, 2000 7:59:33 AM CST

El Cosmico here, wondering why you can't get that most precious of items under your tree? Well, it seems that our somewhat misguided pal Saddam Hussein is hoarding Playstation 2s.

Fortunately, Robo and I have ours already, but as Worldnet Daily reports, the US Customs Service and the FBI are becoming increasingly interested in an apparently HUGE number of PS2s into Iraq. The number is something like 4000 units, purchased in the US and sent to Santa Hussein.

So, does Saddam just want to get really good at Dynasty Warriors 2? Does he have an Armored Core 2 fetish? Maybe he's been overwhelmed by those SSX commercials, or he just wants to beat the crap out of Michael Jackson in Ready To Rumble: Round 2?

No, it seems he just wants to build weapons systems with them. Whew, that's a relief. Apparently, they're good for stuff like guidance systems and the like. BLAM!

Avid readers of AICN will recall that I mentioned such possibilities in last April's article entitied "Playstation 2: Whip-Ass Gaming Console or Missile Guidance System?" Ah, the prescience of Xochipilli.

Anyhoo, the story today comes from Worldnet Daily, and can be found here.

I love how the "intelligence sources" quoted in the article are all relaying secondhand information from "experts." Looks to me like they don't know what they're talking about. The chips that are used to control pilotless vehicles are about the equivalent of a 486. You sure as hell don't need "12-15 PS2s" If Saddam could stockpile 4000 PS2s, he can surely smuggle in a coupla thousand Athlons or Alphas or PIII's. The entire article reads almost like a parody. Nuke Saddam now for taking precious PS2s from nice American children this Christmas!

We should have capped Sadam's punk ass when we had the chance. Schwarzcoft wanted to ride in to Baghdad and string him up by his ball sack but noooooooooooo, once the fucking oil in Kuwait was safe we pulled out. We saved the rich fucking Kuwaitis and left the poor rebels and their families to be slaughtered. All thanks to George Bush Sr. and Colin Powell... And now George Jr. is President-Elect and Colin Powel is the new Sectary of State so we can look forwarded to more half-ass foreign policy... We'll be sure to hurry up and save the guys with the oil but yet we'll sit back and watch the poor die. Like in Bosnia and Serbia, we waited so long to do anything... and why? BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO OIL. However that's not what the right-wingers say, oh no it's because we're not the world's police... But yet we ARE when the rich oil countries are in danger... Then they say they're doing it to protect the people, to protect freedom... YEAH RIGHT. IF you believe that I have a Patriot missle launcher to sell ya. UGH Everyone who voted for GWB should be drug out in the street and shot... Of course that ain't gonna happen since it's THEM who have the guns... The friggin' gun toting, beer drinking, incest happy rednecks that they are... Well those guys and the rich @$$holes who need their tax breaks... Oh don't worry they will donate the money they save on taxes to charities to help the poor... HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH I kill me!

You really think anyone in Iraq can just order 4000 PS2s from the US? Hell the US govt go over every single item that gets shipped to Iraq. They didn't even allow some substance to allow them to make some cleaning products, because apparantely it could be used to make some kind of a bomb.....
You yanks need to realise that your govt is making all this shit up to cover the fact that Iraq and Saddam are a complete non-threat, and this image of the evil Saddam is required to make sure your nice tax dollars go towards the military.
In the 10 years the embargo has been in place at least 500,000 kids (thats under 15s) in Iraq have died due to lack of food and medicine...
James Rubin, some asshole in your govt, has stated on film (shown on ITV in the UK some months ago) that this is an acceptable price to pay for keeping saddam under control...500,000 Kids!!!....You all are bitching about not having a PS2....get a fucking grip on reality,at least your're still alive....

"UN HAS been sending Iraq medicine and food but Saddam was just selling it to get money to work on trying to make nukes! "....I never denied that the UN was sending food and medicines, under the food for oil program. But the fact is despite this half a million kids have died..now I'm not saying that Saddam is not to blame at all..In fact I am pretty sure that his govrenment is corrupt and takes some of the food and mediciens for themselves or to sell on the black market...but the point I am making is that whenever the UN has tried to show compassion by increasing the amount of food, etc, it has always been veteod by the US govt (followed by our govt, UK, who are pretty much the 52nd state nowdays)...And the reason these govts give to the public is some bullshit about saddam still being a danger, etc...They are ignoring the humanity angle...which is that INNOCENT KIDS ARE DYING!! But I suppose if James Rubin can sleep at night knowing this, why shouldn't you..And I'm not quoting these figures off the top of my head, I quote them from the ITN news service (UK) which dont have a track record of spewing bullshit..Anyway I apologise to all movie fans as this post has nothing to do with movies, but then neither did the article :)

And like some above, I blame wussy-ass Ex-Prez Bush for this. If he had *really* laid the smack down on Saddam back during the Gulf War, this shit wouldn't be happening. No wonder I can't get ahold of a PS2 to save my life!! If Reagan had been Prez back during the War, we'd have gone all the way to Bhagdad and had Saddam slapped in a cell next to Noriega. I volunteer to lead the Special Forces team in to liberate these poor captive PS2's. As long as I get 1st dibs on the booty, that is. Oh, and that includes any Dreamcasts or GameCube prototypes we may find as well.

"UN HAS been sending Iraq medicine and food but Saddam was just selling it to get money to work on trying to make nukes! " I never denied this, and I am pretty sure Saddam has swiped a portion of the food and medicines for his own use or to sell on the black market....but the fact is that despite all food, etc being sent kids are still dying...And also the UN is not giving away the food, it is being exchanged under the food for oil program, and everytime Iraq has wanted to sell more oil for food, the proposal has always been veteod by two members of the UN Security council (aren't we lucky to live in such humane countries!). And also I am not quoting figures out of thin air, I am actually quoting from a hour long news report done by the ITN news network in the UK, who do not have a track record for spewing bullshit...You can go check these figures on Amnesty International's website as well....I apologise to all movie fans as this post has nothing to do with movies, but then neither did the article:) One last thing, Kar-Khanna, I guess if James Rubin can admit, on TV, that 500,000 dead kids is a price the US is willing to pay to keep Saddam in check, and can sleep at night, why shouldn't you??

The key is, that the chip engines on the PS2 are primarily concerned with producing high level geometry and probably also have support for various physics models. Saddam doesn't want the game playing technology, he wants the part of the hardware that deals with how your CG models move.

    US sanctions and Iraq threat

    by emperorcaligula

well, you know, whatever he makes with the PS2, he cannot send nukes: Iraq so far doesn't have them, though they tried. In the region, only Israle has nukes; and perhaps some US bases. Well Iran tries hard to build but hasn't them either. If you look farthe, you come to Pakistan and India who both have them and mostly try to guess if they should nuke each other or not:p
Then, assuming Saddam has big nasty stuff to send, well his rockets cannot go farther than 2.000 km, when there's 15.000 km between Iraq and USA. So far for the terrible threat. And his army won't invade half Earth just to go to Washington, trust me;=) you cannot conquer Earth with a population of 20 mio, half of it starving to death. I'm pretty sure far more than 4.000 PS2 were sold in China for instance.
About the 500.000 children, it's a fact, and it's not ITN that found it due to their good journalism. UN reports tell it as well. And many NGOs, Amnesty International, Noam Chomsky etc... are saying it since years. Basically, it's obvious that in less than 1 year, Europe will stop supporting the sanctions and USA will be alone, like for Cuba.
BTW, for your information, Iraq was highly helped, subsided and armed by USA after the Iran revolution stuff, which saw the total demise of US policy in Iran. Saddam now being US arch-enemy just shows that US met their utter demise in Iraq policy as well ;) In fact the guy was a friend of US, CIA and Bush until early 90. He hinted he wanted to make a bad trick to Kuwait then, and the USA were like "oh don't bother us with this, Kuwait is non of our business", so Saddam thought it meant he could do what he wants. Which he did :D
Another funny stuff: Colin Powell was opposed to US intervention, accoring to numerous articles following his nomination. Isn't it particularly funny that he draws most of his fame and is widely praised for having led the Gulf War ;=)

    Stupid Kar-Kanna

    by rolandofgilead

Don't be so stupid as to swallow whole everything the US government and news agencies feed to the public. That goes for rumors and myths too. The oil for food program in Iraq is reported to be (by the UN) one of the best programs of its kind with greater than 90% of the products sent in reaching their targeted recipients. The facts are that people are dying while America and the UK hold up the image of Sadaam Hussein as their only reason for their harsh sanctions and cruel actions. The sanctions are so skewed and arbitrary that a "toy" like the playstation may make it in, but they wont allow shoelaces, pencils, or textbooks (amongst a long list of other items) because they could potentially be used to make "weapons of mass destruction." Not to mention that several UN Inspection Team heads have resigned because their requests for the sanctions to come to an end were ignored after they determined that Iraq's capabilities of creating "weapons of mass destruction" were extinguished like the rest of their weapons resources. The idea that PS2s would be used to aid UAV (planes that fly themselves) is ridiculous considering Iraq's planes were destroyed during the war. The point is that the sanctions need to stop, and that Americans are being fed too much anti-Sadaam BS and not enough pro-peace / humanitartianism. Get the facts straight, innocent people are dying and we as Americans and British citizens are highly responsible . . . we can change that, just learn more, question more, and you will find the truth. The sanctions can be stopped but we as citizens have to do our part by contacting congressmen and senators and expressing our desire for them to stop. Don't let them continue. If you'd like more information about the truth on the Iraqi sanctions I'd gladly lead you.

As a sidenote do you really thing an extra 4000 PS2s would have made much of a difference in americas population of several hundred million . . . be realisitc people.

=) Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and all that jazz!

    by chaotic blue

Well, okay. Point #1. These are only Playstations, not PS2s, I think only one person mentioned that. All the quotes in the original article implied that, and when I heard this bit on the evening news, it mentinoed it was only the earlier system, not the rare as diamonds newfangled contraption that's a bitch to program for. Mase sense, actually...it's cheaper, easier to find, etc...

Point #2. YES, there are more powerful things out there. BUT it's much easier to buy them legit than on the black market.

Point #3. I don't know about the military, but I know NASA hasn't upgraded their systems since...welll...I don't know. Early 80's? I know the military gets a lot more funding, but leave us face it, the rationale is usually sound: if it ain't broke, after all...

Point #4. Yes, we should just try to go in there and set things straight, rather than leave problems like this around for when we need a convenient distraction.

    Some Facts

    by antiotter

    1) Why we didn't kick his ass in 1991. Our allies agreed only upon driving Saddam out. Any occupation of Iraq by US soldiers would have met with our closest allies turning their backs on the US and some of the Arab allies and the French threaatening to turn their GUNS on US troops. Not worth WWIII.

    2) It's cheaper to raid a $299 PS2 for its guts than a $999 PC.

    3) They are not "just sending them home for Christmas." The PS2 in the US are NTSC. The Middle East is PAL. They won't work as game systems.

    4) Taking out Saddam isn't enough. His heirs are as crazy as he is.

    5)
