Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. You may remember a couple years ago when Netflix made waves with a $30+ million deal with Brad Pitt for an exclusive feature. It was one of the first big moves made by the company into feature territory and now we've seen the first footage in this teaser trailer for WAR MACHINE, directed by Animal Kingdom's David Michod. Check it out:
We're entering a very interesting time right now thanks to the huge upswing in cash from the big streaming outlets and their desire to grab big name talent. If we're lucky this is going to turn into something like a new golden era for storytellers. These guys getting the chance to make decently budgeted features not dictated by the lowest common denominator audiences could be the best confluence of events since the glory days of the '70s.
There's no guarantee we'll end up getting that quality of filmmaking, but no matter where it goes you have to admit it's very exciting that there's so much money being pumped into the visions of storytellers wanting to push the envelope without the need to please every single audience member's sensabilities.
War Machine debuts on Netflix May 26th.
