Ye Meng reports on: Tsui Hark and SWORD OF THE 3RD MASTER; and on Michelle Yeoh and INDY 4

Published at:  Dec 14, 2000 6:54:01 PM CST

Our deep diggin well placed Eastern cinema spy Ye Meng sent ol' Father Geek the following today. Ye has proved time and again to be correct in his reports to AICN, with that in mind you can go to the bank with what he says here...

Ye is here again!

As of last Sunday (December 9, 2000) Michelle Yeoh has
formerly confirmed that she will be the leading lady
in INDY4. Meanwhile, the four year old rumor of Kevin
Costner playing Indy's evil brother (Montana,
Connecticut, or maybe Alabama?) is still there. Also,
according to some newer rumors, Natalie Portman has
showed her interest of playing Indy's estranged daughter.

After Zu Wrriors II, Tsui Hark and Zhang Ziyi
(Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) will work together
again.

This time, Tsui Hark will remake a 1977 Hong Kong
flick, Death Duel (original Chinese title: Sword of
the Third Master) next year. Besides Zhang Ziyi who
has already signed up, the production company has
asked Leslie Cheung (A Better Tomorrow 1 & 2, The
Bride with White Hair 1 & 2, Farewell, my concubine,
etc.) to play the third master. The cast may also
include Chikuya Naihe from Japan. The story will be:
as the greatest swordsman, the third son of his family
(the third master) has to face armies of challengers.
The film will be produced by Erh Tung Sheng, played
the third master in the original, and it will have $60
million Hong Kong ($7.7 million US) budget.

    by sith witch

Yeah, so what is up with all this?? I tell you what: Since it seems that Costner's (or whoever plays the evil brother role) name will be another state name, why not make it Illinois, AND make him a Nazi so he can be an Illinois Nazi. Just like on the Blues Brothers-"Illinois Nazis...I hate Illinois Nazis!" Come to think of it, that line was kind of ripped off by the Indy & Temple of Doom screenwriter from Blues Brothers for the line, "Nazis...I hate these guys."

    by magnum pi

Michelle Yeoh is a major hottie and it is very cool that she does her own stunts and she I thought she was great in the 007 movie but I have one misgiving about this report. Everything I have have read about INDY 4(from Spielberg, Lucas and Ford) states that there isn't a script yet. I might be wrong but doesn't it seem odd that they would cast the "female lead" before they even know what the story will be? I think that the lovely Ms. Yeoh has possibly been misqouted.

    by gerardthe2nd

Michelle only said she had been approached for Indy 4 NOTHING is confirmed at all. And Costner said no one has ever contacted him about being in INDY 4 so it's a b.s rumour too. This is about as reliable as the "confirmed" information on there being an Unbreakable trilogy which was Bullshit! On another note I made this exact post an hour ago and it was deleted. Some of you may recall it, can you believe it was deleted and I was banned over this? People say MUCH worse then this all the time and nothing happends! This is BULLSHIT!

TND was one of the best Bonds in recent memory--not as good as GOLDENEYE but close. Way, WAY better then THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH, aka MAXIMUM SNOOZEFEST. What is so hot about the divine Ms. Yeoh? Uh, HELLO?! She can act; she's a martial artist who does her own stunts and she's El Superhottie. All she'd need to do is die her hair purple and she'd be Shampoo! Aw *yeah,* baby! ^_^ Anyway, as for the potential INDY IV; I saw that Entertainment Tonight special too, and I say just let sleeping dogs lie. Like GHOSTBUSTERS, Dr. Jones has had his day, let it go. The third one--with him riding off into the desert sunset--was the perfect ending.

If they went forward with an Indy 4 flick, I'm sure that everybody involved would make sure that it would be a quality production. Look at the franchise history-flawless. And it's not like any of these people need a hit, Harrison Ford & company have all the money and respect they need. What does worry me is bringing in actors like Michelle whatserface and Kevin Costner. I would like all the big names in this production to be limited to Connery, Ford, and the Lucas/Spielberg duo. Why does everybody feel the need to neysay every potentially cool project?

    ideas for Indy4

    by black dwarf

Costner certainly does not fit anywhere in the Indiana Jones universe. He only has one character, a sappy, too-sensitive, pseudo-PC "quiet" man; and that man has no rightful place in the Indy universe. OTOH Indy4 is a good idea. You don't need physical action, people runnig around and doing high kicks. There's plenty of possibilities for an interesting movie, especially if you take this as if it *really is* HF's last Indy film. Make him a bit more like a real archaeologist, but give him a sidekick who can carry on the franchise if you like. I'm thinking your plot could be something like the search for Lao-tsu's magic herb or something, or find some Mongolian or Chinese artifact to look for. It's maybe after, or in the waning days of the War. You've got a few Nazis hanging on, plus soviets preparing for *after* the war, plus the the Red Chinese, plus the kuomintang, plus the Japanese. And in the middle of it all is this rumor (which I'm not making up myself) of neandethals living somewhere in central Asia. Well, I grant you it's not exactly a finished screenplay, but I think there are still plenty of legends to work on, and you really *don't* have to have Ford rolling around and climbing up cliffs to have a great Indy film.

Indiana Jones & The Lost Cool Of George Lucas.

    by buzz maverik

It's another rip-roarin', cliffhangin' adventure as the swashbuckling archaeologist goes in search of an intangible quality this time! We've seen him retrieve everything from the ark of the covenant...to the Shaknbake Stones...to the holy grail. Now he's searching for the most elusive prize of all ... his creator's lost cool. Was it stolen by Willow Elfgood? Or Greedo firing first? Or the most obvious suspect of all, Jar Jar Binks? Aided by like minded allies Darth Maul and Francis Ford Coppola (as sort of an Italian Sallah) Indy must penetrate the heart of Skywalker Ranch to save everything that made George Lucas great. But once inside, can even our hero get out alive with GEORGE LUCAS' LOST COOL????????????

People are just raggin on *sigh* Michelle Yeoh because...

    by valles marineris

She can handle the actual action part of it better than Indy ever could. Part of us probably just doesn't wanna see a decrepid Indy runnin around. For an example of this, see "6 Days 7 Nights", which is already a couple of years old. I do think it can be done, as long as They don't try to have Indy do to much, or contrarily, have him "bumbling" around too much. as long as he gets to do a few cool stunts, make some wisecracks and do the "pointing" thing, I'll be happy.

    by junior d-girl

Karen Allen's character Marian from the first movie seems like the logical choice, I mean they did have sex somewhere along the line right? Bring it on I say! Indy kicks major butt! My alltime favorite action hero must ride again and soon damn it! Indy is way cooler than Star Wars, for which I'm sure I'll get flamed but so what. As for Michelle Yo-Yo, please cast Lucy Liu instead she is a million times cuter and better in every way. Thanks George Lucas I'm sure my opinion means a lot to you...

    by mattman

Marion was funny, but too goody-goody. Willie was just downright annoying (she's the one who should've fallen down a hole). Elsa was the most attractive and fleshed out of them all. She was a nice mix of everything, and not so easy to figure out.

I love Indy. I love talk and rumour of Indy IV. The IV in question feels good to read.Indiana Jones IV. It must be made. The character of Indiana Jones has experienced many random adventures. It doesn't feel right to leave it at a trilogy. It just feels right to see yet another of his random adventures on the big screen. Michelle Yeoh, her apperance, looks right for a forth Indy film. I can see her meld into the world of Indiana Jones with ease with whatever character she would have to play. There's an anticipation about Indy IV that swelling bigger and bigger. I cannot wait.

    Ben Burtt

    by slav

On a different note, for those complaining about Indy's age.....earlier this year I had the oppurtunity of sitting in a seminar with Ben Burtt, who was discussing his sound design work on Star Wars at Fox Studios Australia. Question time came 'round. I HAD to ask about Indy IV. More specifically- about Harrison's older age at tackling the role of Indy with brittle bones (it would effect sound recording, wouldn't it?). He assured me that Harrison was still a fit, capable and healthy man. But if there were going to be spectacular stunts involving Indy, then ILM would jump in, assisting with a digital Indy. Sounds great to me, anything to see this project get off it's feet and on the screen.

Anyone who doesn't like her is a racists asshole.. And I can't believe some fucking moron called her a "Jap" first off "Jap" is a racial slur and second off she's not Japanese! How stupid can people get? I'm also all for Natalie Portman *sigh* as Indy's daughter. I want her to be Marion's daughter... Yeah and bring back Karen Allen. by jmyoda

...AT some point, because in the original version of the Ireland Young Indy episode it opens with Old Indy (George Hall) being chastised by his daughter for watching a soap opera. She's is 40-ish so if you count back from '92 she would have been born in the 40s. However she COULD have been a bit older then that. Personally I want her born around a 9 months after "Raiders" *hint* *hint*.

    by airchinapilot

... how ignorant people can be who *claim* to love film. An opinion is fine but get your bloody facts straight. Yeoh is Chinese. If you even saw her once in "Heroic Trio" you would curl up and bite your balls off after making such an idiotic comment like Lucy Liu is better. Yah, IF Lucy trained for ten years! Whoever made that comment saw "Charlies Angels" and "Shanghai Noon" and thought: "that's kungfu!" Bleahh. Fun movies that are nothing compared to Yeoh's movies. If you just want to see a body, crack open your crusty Playboy again. Yeoh is just the right age to be a believable squeeze for an Indy who is Harrison's age. Unlike whoever played Elsa in that terrible, cheap Indy 3, Yeoh can inject some energy into such a film. Finally, I had a sudden flash of an image that I'm sure has occured to some of you other talkbackers. Michelle Yeoh as a Jedi. Think about it. Jedi's don't have to be men or creaky puppets.

    by dagan

The ignorance of some people on this board. Some of these guys make themselves look like morons every time they appear here. Yeoh is not Japanese - and if people say "but Billy Ray it's the same thang!" then again, I feel extremely sorry for you. Also, for the guy who said "But what could she possibly be?" - Can you not see how inherently racist that statement is, guy? What could she NOT possibly be??? Just because she's Asian, why does there have to be a role crafted for her that has something to do with an Asian plot? Or why can't she be Indy's love interest - you seem to think just because she's not "white" then it wouldn't work... Someday we'll see Asians, Indians, Hispanics and other groups frequently in roles that don't call attention to their heritage - a Mother and Father don't have to be "the Japanese tourists", or the "oppressed Chinese immigrants", but just a normal Mother and Father, who love their children, go to work, pay bills, etc. Why must Asians always be in American films only when the plot has something to do with Asia, or they're a bad guy of some sort? African Americans have come a long way in film here - but Asians and Hispanics are still treated as "jokey comic relief", "bad guys", or some other stereotype EVERY TIME they appear on the American silver screen.

    by kyle.reese

African-Amercican actors are slowly getting up there with the "white elite" (vomit), and I wish them all the best. But Asian and hispanic actors are never given a fair chance. I mean what pisses me off a lot was the fact that Ghandi was portrayed by fucking Ben Kingsley. I don't care how great his performance was, there are thousands of Indian actors who could have played India's most famous icon. I hope that in the near future Hollywood shows some more equality to all colours. It's not just black and white... What colour an actor is should NEVER define what character he or she is restricted to play. I praise the Wachowski brothers because they don't give into racial stereotypes. But if you take a look at Armageddon, the single black guy in the film is a insult to the black community.
All you white-supremists who think Yeoh shouldn't be in Indy 4 are the ones who hold back equality in the world. Damn you all!

But considering that his birth name is Krishna Banji and IS Hindu, its not really all that much of a travesty. Look stuff up before you go off and post on something's racial insincerity, it doesn't really matter all that much and if you're wrong you look bad. Denzel Washington is not muslim, yet he played Malcolm X... Ben Kingsley is not jewish, but he played on in Schindler's List. Ok a new Indy Film....... I like the idea. But if it is to include Indy's 'evil brother' and 'estranged daughter' then it should go right back to development hell and be fucking nailed in place there!! It frankly has to set after the war. Watching Ford in 'What lies beneath' I was stuck by how much older he looks now. I hadnt noticed it before 'cos the last film of his I saw at the flicks was 'Air Force One' and his films since then Ive got out on DVD and watched them at home. But seeing him again 40 foot high on a big screen.... the mans got wrinkles now so deep you could go mineing for oil in them!! The idea of having someone carry on the franchise (Son of Indy?? Suggestions please) is an intrigeing one but not an idea that the film should focus on entirly. Oh and just one other thing, not on the subject but I want to say someting about it. As a citizen of Great Britain and Europe I just want to thank you Americans for the wonderfull entainment you guys have given us with the election of your president. Ive not seen anything quite so funny since I first saw Monty Python and The Holy Grail. I can sleep safely in my bed here in the UK knowing that the good old U S of A and its vast nuclear arsenal is now being run by a man who couldn't outwit a used tea-bag!! Cheers!

Hollywood attitudes to race & sex

    by elliot_kane

Unfortunately Hollywood mostly seems to think in terms of stereotypes. Arabs and Germans are always the bad guys; Englishmen who aren't butlers are effeminate, villains, or both; Asians are shop keepers on the rare instances that they ever appear; Orientals are - without exception - martial arts experts; Black Americans are 'gangstas' whilst White Americans are always heroes. Indeed, all main heroes must be Americans - why else cast Costner as Robin Hood (Enlish) or Gere as Lancelot Du Lac (French)? Or Jolie as Lara Croft, for that matter... As for Hispanics - other than Salma Hayek I do not recall ever seeing one in a film, which says it all, really. Heroines are never over the age of 30, even if the leading man is drawing his pension (and in some cases is close to being classified as an Antique). Black American actors are starting to make inroads on this problem, but it would be hard for Hollywood to ignore actors of the calibre of Samuel L. Jackson or Laurence Fishburne. The colour aspect is still played up too much in too many films though. Hollywood would doubtless be shocked to know that 'Black' is not a race - it is merely a (varyingly inaccurate) description of skin colour. Like 'White' in fact. People are people wherever you go. *** Back to Indy 4 - should Michelle Yeoh play leading lady? - oh yes! Should her character be involved with Indy romantically? Er.. No. She is far too young and far too attractive to be interested in a 60 year old. Let's try something truly original and NOT have a cradle-snatching hero. How about giving Indy a son who could become romantically involved with her instead? Just a thought...

    My idea for Indy 4....

    by clubberlang

If Indy has a brother, they should cast the original choice to play Indy, Tom Selleck. Have Tom Selleck be the younger evil brother to Ford's older-wrinkled Indy.

    Michelle Yeoh

    by rondo

Ok,ultimately it's all about opinion, everyone's got one.By the way,I believe Michelle is Malaysian, not Jap,as the pea-brain earlier posted. What I love about the internet is that it shows how many worthless, racist, ass backwards people there are in the world.

    Should they or shouldn't they

    by senor askew

First off, Eliot Kane is right on. And second I am torn between loving Indy films and wanting another and worring about the fact that perhaps they will make it and it won't measure up to its predecesors and will, horror of horrors be absolute crap. This stuff about evil brothers and estranged daugthers all seems a bit melodramatic to me and doesn't relate to to the tone of the previous films.

and then come back here with your foot in your mouth and apologize for thinking Michelle Yeoh is anything less than a GOD!!! She has a presence and authority in any movie she touches that elevates it to new levels of coolness.........

INDIANA JONES AND THE JADE EMPIRE

    by bazman

A cool title, but I just thought it up, so don't wet yourself. As for Indy 4??? Bring it on. Sure Harry Ford is gettin' old, but he's been gettin' old since the 90s started! I think one more would be good. Unlike 007, I can believe Indy could still be digging around ruins as an old guy, cos I mean that is his life, the whole man of action thing is just something he seems to stumble into, which is cool. I imagine the fourth flick in the series would play up that angle. Him thinking he's getting too old and how he cant crack that whip as good as he use to.
I'm not crazy about Michelle Yeoh, though I have no problem with her as a Bond girl, but she didn't really turn my head or anything. I would prefer someone like Catherine Zeta-Jones (i'm only saying this out of a schoolboy-ish fascination with her). Also, since the last adventure we saw was in 1989, I guess war-time indy will be a thing of the past, so that'll be a cool thing seeing how he acts to a world after the war. Maybe even having Indy team up with a german archaeologist, and having to get over his loathing of them. Considering Harrison's age, and seeing as the latest adventure was in 1938 (Last Crusade), I'd say it would have to take place in 1952! That's a different world from '38!

    Michelle Yeoh-Indy girl

    by pddoug

I think this is a great idea. Michelle Yeoh is a great actress and martial artist, and she's even hot too. Perfect for Indy 4- could have some awesome action scenes if they use her to the full potential...BTW, I thought the kind of racism that walesfilmclub has died off like 30 years ago or something- it's ridiculous.

Michelle Yeoh 101: Queen of action

    by fukienesedrgn

First of all she's Chinese\malaysian. She is the only person(let alone female) to match Jackie Chan stunt for stunt in his own movie(supercop). She has worked with all the big name action stars to come out from hong kong. She does her own stunts. She is respected by the best in the stunt\movie business(jackie said he ONLY trusts Michelle to do her own stunts). She can really whoop but(jet li said "Even the stunt men are scared of her"). She was Miss Malaysia. When she was injured on the set, Quentin Tarantino went to hong kong to meet her in the hospital to tell her how much he liked her movies. She is for real, she can kick your's and mine. But most of all....SHE CAN WUPP LUCY LU BLIND FOLDED AND BOTH HANDS TIED BEHIND HER BACK!!! (lol ally mcbeal to action movie watta joke)

    Michelle Yeoh

    by pine

Michelle Yeoh would be great in any movie and any role. I would love to see her as a Jedi, but I've heard she turned down a role in EPS1. Maybe it's true, maybe not, either way I think the best we could hope would be EPS3. Anyone who says Michelle sucks, either hasn't seen any of her own movies (not side-kick roles), or is very closed minded. Lucy Lu is a fine actresses, but when it comes to action, Michelle's the best.
