Denis Villeneuve being lined up for Legendary's DUNE reboot?!?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Variety has a very interesting pre-Holidays story sure to make geeky toes tingle all over the world. Denis Villeneuve is on a bit of a roll recently, having just knocked Arrival right outta the damn park. He has always been a confident storyteller and it feels like he's reaching his peak right now, so naturally he's Legendary's choice to tackle another near-impossible sci-fi work, one that has defeated a number of other great, rising visionaries.

Villeneuve's Blade Runner legacy sequel on the horizon (and looking mighty good, I must say) and he seems poised to be the next Christopher Nolan. He grounds his genre in a way that only the masters can, making a recognizable world that we can all relate to despite the extraordinary imagery and bigger than life stories on display.

Frank Herbert's Dune is a challenge, but if anybody out there can make it work it's Villeneuve. No matter what, we're in for one absolutely gorgeous movie if he ends up signing on the dotted line.

Variety mentions Legendary's plan to make a film and then launch a TV series surrounding Herbert's books and that Villeneuve's involvement would likely just cover the feature.

Thoughts? Fan casting? Surely Paul Giamatti is in the running for Baron Harkonnen, right?
