I judge “Midnight Special,” the tale of a dad who kidnaps his otherworldly son from a deadly cult, one of the best movies of 2016. Released to cinemas March 18, it garnered 85% positive reviews from “top critics” polled by Rotten Tomatoes.
Written and directed by Jeff Nichols (“Mud,” “Loving”), it stars Michael Shannon and Joel Edgerton, both of whom are in “Loving.”
Shannon, who just wrapped up five seasons on “Boardwalk Empire,” saw his career catch fire in 2016. The actor appeared in at least 10 (!) movies this year, including “Batman V Superman,” “Elvis & Nixon,” “Nocturnal Animals,” “Loving,” “Complete Unknown,” “Frank & Lola,” “Wolves,” “Poor Boy,” “Salt & Fire” and “Midnight Special.” His first movie was 1993’s “Groundhog Day, in which he played the groom Fred. He didn’t work onscreen again until 1996, when he played Flower Delivery Man in the Keanu Reeves movie “Chain Reaction.” In 2008 he appeared in a single movie, “Revolutionary Road.”
Edgerton, who wrote, directed and co-starred with Jason Bateman in “The Gift,” played Owen Lars in two Star Wars prequels, and was also a component of “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” “Black Mass,” 2011’s “The Thing,” and 2013’s “The Great Gatsby.” He reunited with Star Wars co-stars Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman in this year’s “Jane Got A Gun.”
Also in the cast are Star Wars actor Adam Driver, Spider-Man actress Kirsten Dunst, “Boardwalk Empire” actor Paul Sparks, “The Night Of” actor Bill Camp, and “Mud” actor Sam Shepard.
The kid is played by Jaeden Lieberher, who was also the kid in the 2014 Bill Murray comedy “St. Vincent.”
The only bad thing about “Midnight Special” is its title, which inevitably summons only the bearded visage of Robert Weston "Wolfman Jack" Smith.
John Cena’s SNL was top show last Saturday in late night or primetime. SNL’s key-demo audience is bigger than Fallon, Kimmel and Colbert’s combined.
