Lord of the Rings creative team to tackle steampunk-y post-apocalyptic tale MORTAL ENGINES!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Peter Jackson and crew have laid low a bit after the long trek to pump out those Hobbit movies, but that doesn't mean they haven't been working on stuff.

One of the projects Peter, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have been doing work on looks to have found a home at Universal. They have written an adaptation of Philip Reeve's Mortal Engines and Jackson's longtime collaborator Christian Rivers will direct it. You'll remember Rivers was once attached to direct another Jackson/Walsh project, a remake of the WW2 story THE DAMBUSTERS.

Mortal Engines is a crazy story about a dim future where all big cities are mobile, roving on giant wheels, powered by the titular "mortal engines', across the world sucking up its resources town by town.

Shooting looks to begin next year in Wellington's Stone Street Studios.

It's an exciting step for what's sure to be a visually incredible story and with Jackson, Walsh and Boyens providing the writing I'm sure we'll get some really strong characters to go along with those visuals.

No word yet on what Jackson will actually direct next, but it's clear he's poured a lot of his passion into the development of this project.

What do you folks think?
