Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Today's BTS picture takes a trip to the Black Lagoon with a pretty great shot of the Creature's designer, Milicent Patrick, hard at work on the iconic monster.
This shot is obviously staged and it's no wonder. Universal actually sent Patrick out on a press tour prior to the release of Creature From the Black Lagoon, the novelty being a woman actually did some design and creature effects work. Gasp! Shock! The controversy!
The legend is that the very famous Universal makeup man Bud Westmore wasn't happy about all the publicity Ms. Patrick was getting, even if she was only taking credit for her own actual work and shortly after the release of Creature From the Black Lagoon Milicent Patrick was let go by the studio. That's a huge bummer for movie fans because her design work on the Creature is nothing short of incredible and it's still my favorite looking Universal monster to this day.
