Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today's craziest bit of news. I know Leonardo DiCaprio is super environmentally conscious, but I never would have called him spearheading a big screen version of Captain Planet and the Planeteers. That show was preachy as shit, even for a kid from a liberal household.
DiCaprio's Appian Way is developing the project at Paramount with Jono Matt and Glen Powell (Scream Queens) writing, per THR). That's weird, but even weirder still is their approach to the material. It sounds like they're trying for a Lord & Miller approach.
The cartoon was about five youths that had a magic rings that could control a different natural element. When brought together they could also summon Captain Planet himself, a blue dude with a green mullet who was there to kick ass for Mother Earth.
That's the cartoon. The movie is supposed to take place years after that stuff, with Captain Planet "a washed up has been who needs the kids more than they need him." Maybe that's why the environment went to shit? Captain Planet pulled a Willie from Bad Santa!
That plot is super weird (and almost a direct lift from a great underseen Alan Arkin/Christopher Lee vehicle THE RETURN OF CAPTAIN INVINCIBLE) and almost makes me want to see what the hell they're doing with this thing.
So bizarre. All I know is that they have to get Al Gore to cameo somewhere in there. What do you folks think?
