This Week's SATURDAY SHORTS: Twisted Friendships, Bizarre Comedy, and An Incredible Doc!

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Muldoon here with an exciting lineup of badass short films I think you might want to check out. Unfortunately last week was a non-stop chaotic flood of business, so I missed out on sharing some cool films with you all. Fear not, this week's lineup is something special, with an unintended theme of throwing friends into a bizarre situation and seeing how they react. Of course themes of friendships and high fives isn't my typical brand of fun, so expect something with a bit more teeth. Whatever kind of films you're into, I just hope you catch a short here that rocks your world. Some look to have had decent budgets, others - zero, but what they all have is a certain level of passion wherein a person set out to make something - and succeeded (from where I sit). So without much more chit chat, let's kick this shindig off and see some fun flicks, eh?

Go grab yourself some popcorn, lock your kids in a closet, kill the lights, relax and check out this little weekly film fest we've got ourselves here:

BEST FRIENDS

TRT: 27:00

First up is a film from Dutch filmmaker Ruwan Heggelman. "Childhood best friends Ferry and Robert, now office colleagues, are confronted with an unsual change when Robert is starting to look pale and experiences a sudden crave for human flesh. Even worse: he has just uncontrollably bitten a colleague. Is their lifelong friendship capable of surviving such a drastic change in one of the two friends?" It's beautifully shot, well acted, and leaves you wanting more - leaving me excited to see what Ruwan does next! If you're as curious as I am about the filmmaker, then be sure to check out his website. (Unless you speak Dutch, be sure to click on the Englsh subtitles!)

NAE PASARAN

TRT: 13:45

Next up is an incredible documentary from Felipe Bustos Sierra that shines some light on a story I was completely unaware of, how a group of Scottish men sent a message to Chile's Augusto Pinochet. Felipe is no stranger to SATURDAY SHORTS as I've had the pleasure of screening his film THREE-LEGGED HORSES back in 2013. What he's created here is a masterful exploration of a bit of history that utilizes animated scenarios and a roundtable of talking heads. It's on another level. Check out Felipe's Uplifting Scottish Films here!

MY FIRST DAY

TRT: 1:06

Jon Kovel is back with a super short teaser of a film, something I dare say is "demented." The short is screening on Crypt TV. I'd be curious to see where this idea goes, if anywhere - possibly like a horror version of ZOOM or SKY HIGH. At any rate, I don't want to give anything away that I haven't already. Check out Jon's twisted short, then head over to his Funny Or Die page to see more from the man!

SLAPS

TRT: 2:35

Fergal Costello has our next short, which is more of a sketch with layers, based around the Irish game of Slaps. He wrote, directed and edited the piece which was conceived of, shot on Wednesday afternoon of this week and finished just yesterday. It's a silly short that I thought was a bit of fun. Check out more of his work if you like what you see!

MERRY GENTLEMEN

TRT: 10:06

To wrap us out this week we have a silly short from SATURDAY SHORTS vet Bob Rose. "On the worst day of his life, a man encounters a merry friend who unexpectedly lifts his spirits." It's always a treat to see what Bob creates, typically with a fresh flavor of fun that doesn't feel forced, more like hanging out with friends as opposed to watching a comedian create a scenario with a punch line. Check out his Vimeo Page for more!

BAM! That's it for this week's selection of shorts, all submitted from the filmmakers directly. I hope you all had a great time and I hope to see you next week with a handful of shorts that I think are pretty fun as well. In the mean time, feel free to click back to the past with articles of yesteryear:

If you have a short and think it belongs here or are on the fence about whether to send it in, please do send it in - I'd love to see what you've put together. I've already seen hundreds of fresh new filmmakers' shorts and like any good addict, I need more!

Shoot me an email at "Mike@aintitcool.com"

In the subject line include:

“SHORTS” + “Your film’s name” + “The film’s genre”

Then, in the body of the email, please include a synopsis of the film and any contact information you might think I need or would want published. The more info you send my way, the more info there is to put with your short.

Please don’t feel the need to submit multiple times.

Remember, the filmmakers might still be in the audience, so feel free to share your thoughts in Talkbacks below. (JUST DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE). I picked them, so you know I think highly of all of these, but how about you fine folks? How'd you like 'em?

BY THE WAY: If you've had a short featured here, that means that I personally am a fan of your work, so feel free to shoot me any kind of news on new projects/films/whatever. I can't say I'll be able to help or in what capacity, but I'm interested in your work and am always down to see more! (Keep making cool stuff, everyone!)
