Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Tom Ford (A Single Man) has a thriller coming out called Nocturnal Animals with a great cast, including Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon, Isla Fisher, Armie Hammer, Laura Linney, Michael Sheen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
The trailer just dropped and while I appreciate the grimy feeling Ford is going for, something about the trailer just isn't sitting right with me. Check it out and we'll talk after:
I love all those actors and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in particular looks like he's really going to be chewing up the scenery here, but there's a forced, inauthentic vibe to this trailer that I can't shake. It could be the editing just doesn't let things flow naturally, but I get a too-serious to be super fun and too sleazy to be super serious feeling that puts the tone in a conflicted phantom zone that I'm not sure I'll dig.
It is just a trailer, so I'll hold out hope that the movie itself constructs a more palatable vibe. I didn't love Ford's first outing as director, but he's got a hell of a cast to play with in a gritty crime thriller sandbox and I hope it works because I'm gonna see it either way and I'd much prefer to not feel like I wasted 2 hours of my life.
What about you guys? Think I'm being too harsh?
