Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Kubrick films always have amazing BTS pics, some shot by the man himself. One of the most popular images from the original run of this column was the (at the time) rarely seen self-portrait shot by Kubrick and his daughter in the red bathroom mirror from The Shining, Jack Nicholson out of focus in the foreground, but smiling like he thinks Kubrick is taking his picture instead of his own reflection.
This one is also from The Shining and it's obviously a few generations removed from the original (a scan of a copy somewhere), but I love it. Movie sets, no matter how creepy the project, always have down time and when you're a kid on a set you're bound to get bored.
And that looks exactly like what is captured here with young Danny Lloyd, popping a squat with some toys on the famous Overlook carpet. The lightstands in the background to really underline the image of a bored young man trying to keep himself entertained on a movie set.
