Christoph Waltz to join Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron's ALITA?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Robert Rodriguez is hard at work getting Alita: Battle Angel ready for the big screen with the help of producer (and longtime champion of this property) James Cameron. They already have their Alita in Rosa Salazar and now THR says she'll be joined by Christoph Waltz.

Waltz would play the role of Dr. Dyson Ido, the scientist who finds and restores Alita, a cyborg with no memory of what she was before being discovered. It's a mentor role this time out, which is pretty cool. Waltz has a good range, but tends to play mostly smarmy villains or scruzzy neutral characters. I guess that's what happens when your breakout role is playing a Nazi.

It'd be a good get for this production. I'm still curious how Rodriguez is going to pull this off visually. I'd hope Cameron inspires him to go grand and cinematic in a way he hasn't been able to do yet. When Rodriguez nails a tone he makes magic. Sin City, From Dusk Till Dawn, Desperado. I definitely hope Alita is more in line with those films. An ass-kicking lady cyborg movie done with the precision he brought to Desperado could be next level amazing, but the question is whether or not that'll be the focus or if it'll be more on dazzling CG sci-fi worldbuilding. I really hope for the former.

Thoughts?
