Is a Man of Steel sequel finally in development?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Man of Steel isn't perfect, but it is by far my favorite of the new DCEU films. I'll defend the ending any day of the week (forcing Superman to make an impossible no-win choice is the only way to really hurt someone as powerful as he is). It was a puzzling step for WB to jump right into Batman V Superman, which isn't really Man of Steel 2 or Batman 1, but rather a piece of the puzzle they needed to get to Justice League faster.

Sadly, that movie didn't turn out too well. They're still trying to find the balance of studio influence and artistic freedom that will give them a film that doesn't fizzle out so quickly after the first weekend.

Our pal Umberto Gonzalez (aka El Mayimbe) has a new gig over at The Wrap and had a comic book movie source tell him that Warner Bros has quietly moved Man of Steel 2 into active development. What that means is that it went from some vague probability sometime after Justice League to people actually starting to be paid to work on the script. If Gonzalez's source is correct then that means the ball is officially rolling on a standalone Superman sequel.

Warners is definitely all in on these DC movies. BvS might have taken a critical beating, but it still pulled in over $800 million world wide. Suicide Squad had iffy reviews, too, but beat Guardians of the Galaxy for best August opening weekend. The money's there for them, they just have to get their shit in order to really start raking it in.

Justice League might be a step towards fixing that tone problem or it could be a radical overcorrection from the creative team behind the film. We won't know until it's all cut together.

I know I dig Cavill in the cape. I just hope he gets more to do in his next standalone movie. The secret to Christopher Reeve's success wasn't just that he oozed purity and innocence, it's that he was able to play both Clark Kent and Superman as two different, but equally compelling characters. If we can get a glimpse of that in the Man of Steel sequel I think we'll be in for something good.

We'll see.
