Updated! Behold the DISCOVERY of CBS' new STAR TREK series!!!

Hey folks, Harry here...   Hall H just got done with the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Star Trek paney - and we learned some interesting things.  Showrunner Bryan Fuller told the crowd that the show would be serialized in a novel like form instead of the standard episodic formula that we're used to with Trek.   He also asked William Shatner if he would be willing to return to STAR TREK if they could figure how to undo his Kirk's death!   Shatner gave an enthusiast HELL YEAH!   Watching the tweets fly out of the hall, it seems that Fuller completely won the crowd over.  And there was this:

Love the astronomical lining up of that first shot... very Kubrick... and then DISCOVERY... giggle. I can't wait to see what this new show has in store with us!

Keep it cool,

Harry

Update:  Copernicus here!  This reminded me of the Adam/McQuarrie design for the Enterprise from the planned 1976 Star Trek movie PLANET OF THE TITANS.  Ultimately those plans fell through and turned into a new planned TV series, STAR TREK: PHASE II.  Then those fell though and one of those scripts was turned into STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE.  Above:  McQuarrie art, below:  screenshots from the new trailer (I lightened the asteroid shot).  You can see they even copied the asteroid as spacedock concept.

After I made this, I read on io9 that series co-creater Bryan Fuller has confirmed that the ship design is based on McQuarrie's work, and that it is set in the Prime universe!
