Clea DuVall has made a name for herself for years in front of the camera, in both television (CARNIVALE, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) and film (SHE'S ALL THAT, GIRL INTERRUPTED, ARGO, THE FACULTY...tons of other titles). And now she is making her directorial debut with THE INTERVENTION.
The film follows a longtime group of friends as they gather together for the weekend to stage a relationship intervention for a couple whose marriage has seen better days. Awkward hilarity ensues as they try to find the right way to gently press the issue, and over the course of the weekend, they are all forced to examine their own relationships a little more closely.
The cast is incredible, with DuVall co-starring alongside Natasha Lyonne, Melanie Lynskey, Jason Ritter, Cobie Smulders, Alia Shawkat, Ben Schwartz and Vincent Piazza.
I caught the film at the Seattle International Film Festival and found it to be both thoughtful and hilarious. We get a lot of powerful character moments in a script that never gets buried by its own weight, and Lynskey steals the entire show.
